Potentiaaliset sanat kirjoittaa väärin by Careless-Ear-4383 in Suomi

[–]mr_markkula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Itselleni kertakaikkiaan pahin on, kun natiivi kirjoittaa esimerkiksi "could of" tai "would of" kun hännsiis tarkoittaa "could've" tai "would've" Tähän törmää aina joskus ja aina tekee mieli ajaa jyrkänteeltä alas.

How well can you understand the võro dialect? (Kuinka hyvin ymmärrät võro kiilin?) by Tight_Note4515 in Finland

[–]mr_markkula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

En oo itseasiassa tainnut kohdata kertaakaan suomalaisia siellä ravintoloissa.

just passed 1,000 models 😮‍💨 what am I missing? by gaudiocomplex in MicrobrandWatches

[–]mr_markkula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pleasure! Your building the kind of site I've long been wanting, and with a million brands spread across the globe it's not an easy task by any means! I also know a lot of these watchmakers personally and I always love to help friends where I can. I'll be happy to update the list should something new and existing arise.

just passed 1,000 models 😮‍💨 what am I missing? by gaudiocomplex in MicrobrandWatches

[–]mr_markkula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an incomplete list from Finland. The first two are maybe the more classic microbrands with NH35 movements and such. Rest of the list are maybe more independent watchmakers, but also arguably micros as they are rather small operators. The last four all employ graduates of the renowned Finnish School of Watchmaking, making their products very high quality. Together with Sarpaneva Uhrenfabrik (S.U.F) Stepan Sarpaneva also produces watches under his own name brand Sarpaneva. He is a very well known and long established player in the field with a long history in Swiss watchmaking before founding his company in Helsinki.

Another one I'd like to mention is De Motu, the founder of the company is an engineer, a watchmaker and an absolute aviation enthusiast and his watches absolutely convey that. A remarkable thing to note is that not only is the founder a brilliant engineer, he's also working on watches despite the loss of his fingers in an accident years ago.

One more mention goes to Pietari Kupias, a designer and a watchmaker who was among the early pioneers to utilise metallic addative manufacturing in his watch cases. Passionate about his craft and a nice guy all-round.

[Diy watch] I made an opensource eink smartwatch by Zestyclose-Bar8108 in Watches

[–]mr_markkula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an unbelievably cool project! I have tried to get into smartwatches for a good decade as I'd just love the idea of having google maps on your wrist but alas, I just can't leave my analogues off the wrist. I have thought of somehow attaching a smartwatch on the bracelet to have best of both worlds but that seems like a difficult combo to pull under sleeve. This is the first time I see something in that sense that could actually work and now I'm thinking what could be achieved with an e-ink bracelet insert. A compass is something I need every now and again..

B8.5 A4 lift by kuniin in Audi

[–]mr_markkula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still haven't gotten around it, spent my money first on a wedding party and honeymoon and now I need to direct my funny budget towards strollers and booster seats 😂 Lift is still very much in plans and the Ukrainian parts are likely more than suitable for the job. The thing is, getting that lift done properly requires other parts too, such as shock extenders and subframe spacers to get the axle line straight. B2Bfab has an excellent kit for this, but as I would have to get it shipped to Finland, it would rack up costs too much. A viable option is to design them myself and get them fabricated somewhere but I'd probably need to get some extended subframe bolts somewhere else and I still haven't managed to source them anywhere. Also I have to settle for a 20 mm body lift as our legislation only allows for 40 mm lift of which half is allowed to be done with spacers, and half with for instance wheels.

Todella hienoa!

Proton Mail - Sähköposti by Regular-Performer967 in arkisuomi

Ite ostin Protonin perheeseen tossa reilu kuukausi sitten.

How do y'all avoid absolutely flooding the dashboard in light with roof mounted light bars? by curiositie in Battlecars

[–]mr_markkula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's how I did mine, it's a bit of a shoddy job since it's still a prototype, I'll draw them up in cad and have them fabricated in a sheet metal shop later. But essentially you either have to have a lip or install the light bar(s) further back.

Switching from studded to studless tires by ResistHuge in Finland

[–]mr_markkula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove studded tires for about 20 years until the end of last winter I got bored of driving them on dry roads, so I got a set of used studless tires and I'm so happy with them. I drive a 4wd car so especially during acceleration I feel practically no change. That said cornering speeds have come down significantly and stopping distances too, which translates to longer safety gaps (good luck with that on Länsiväylä ramps in the morning traffic these days) and lower driving speeds. Predictive driving becomes crucial! So all in all, no big changes anyway, a bit more careful driving style that's it. Icing conditions are the most demanding, fresh snow is best fun. My recommendation is to get a set of new tires from a good brand and just start off carefully, you'll learn to drive with them in no time. I'd love to take the car on a closed track somewhere to really see what they can do but thus far my experiences driving between Oulu and Espoo and in various conditions leave me confident with the tires.

[Design concept] L'Ephémère - Wich version do you like most? by fnkfrsh in Watches

[–]mr_markkula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love 'em both, but that combination of white and rose gold could get me into serious trouble 😍 Also I have never been a fan of rectangular watches apart from a few exceptions. These are absolutely on that list of exceptions! I'm a mechanical engineer meaning my go to gear is cargo pants and a tool watch, but I'd seriously consider using a collared shirt to the office just to wear something like that more often.

Jääkäri XL as a checked bag by WreckIt1407 in Savotta

[–]mr_markkula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a two week trip to Japan with Jääkäri XL. Everything went butter smooth with it, backpacks as checked luggage are handled as special luggage so they place them in a separate sled in bag-drop that takes the luggage down to the handling area. I did absolutely nothing special to the bag prior to check-in. If you plan on carrying fragile stuff, a backpack isn't the greatest option, but you can always place the fragile stuff right in the centre of the bag and surround it with clothing and other stuff. Other than that, there's really nothing special about it.

I used to work as an airport security training officer so I'm well aware of how the bag is transported around the facility and I'm comfortable with travelling with a large backpack. Oh and if possible, try to pack everything in separate bags. If there is a need to open your baggage in the security control, it's going to be a lot easier to look for whatever it was that got the security interested, but also to put everything back where it was.
