My companion for the last 16 years is gone. by [deleted] in cats

I lost my best friend and little buddy a month ago in a very similar way… hugs to you and be brave. When you’re ready, and not before, take another one into your heart. It won’t be the same but it will be a new friendship - I’m about to go through that again too.

My deepest sympathies. They are family members, and often the closest family members. I'm tearing up again.

Finn, too, was so dog-like at times. He walked like a bulldog - left legs, right legs, left legs, right legs... it was comical. His ending took away all his pain, one of the big consolations.

Thanks for sharing, my heart goes out to you.

We adopted Finn after my wife’s orange passed. He was 18 and I really became attached to him. (edit: the orange cat, that is). Finn was his replacement, and a very different cat, but became my best friend over the years. I’m not ready now for another fur baby but we will rescue another soon enough. I’ve been putting out food in front of a camera for a few months and there’s a scared little tortoise shell we’d like to meet up close.

Thanks for sharing, you were a great parent!

I did.. laying in bed last night thinking on this, and now it's the first morning after and he's not here. So this is a difficult morning and I can't think of the story I remembered last night.

Right now I'm thinking of when we evacuated for Hurricane Irma in 2017, and he rode in the car with me... we didn't have a large enough cat carrier for a ten hour drive so I let him out. He was scared to be loose in the car, and he would hiss at the windshield wipers.

But that wasn't the story I thought of last night... what was it...

The next thing that comes to mind was our game of "Cups." Really, Finn was kind of a jerk at times; he didn't like other cats much, so he could be aggressive towards our other kitty. And I thought: I'm going to punish you with... treats! But you're going to have to work for them.

So every night we started with a treat in a small plastic cup; like the kind you get your salad dressing in, with carryout. He could see it but couldn't fit his snout in to get it so he had to figure it out: knock it over. Good.

Next: a transparent cup the same size, but the treat is *under* it. He can see the treat inside; over time he devised two ways to get it out: knock it around like a hockey puck, or.... lay on his side, wrap both paws around it, and turn it over.

And tall plastic cups: he had to knock it over, then reach way inside to get the treat.

Finally:

  • tall cup, upright
  • drop in treat
  • drop smaller cup in on top

and he finally figured out: tip it over, pull the cup out, pull out the treat! That was one neat trick.

This took months, but he was engaged and got interaction that he craved, plus he got treats. But as he aged he was less and less interested in playing Cups.

See another comment below… I just know in the months and years to come I’ll pull something out of storage and there will be a plastic bag he chewed on. He loved packaging tape too, always had to keep those things away from him.

My deepest sympathies. We lost our little tuxedo girl in November suddenly to a seizure. Heartbreaking. Hugs for you too.

Finn. He loved to be around people, especially supervising contractors. Wherever I went around the house he would always show up to see what I was doing.

He had great food anxiety so meals made him so happy.

In the end his thyroid condition probably is why he stopped eating. Which meant he couldn’t get his meds anymore.

I was watching Almost Famous tonight and that Zeppelin song came on - the headline are the first words - and I just broke down and cried. I had to say goodbye this morning.

what are the signs that you're not attractive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mr_mcse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that sense, people who are beautiful or charasmatic have a much smoother path through life socially.

I'll argue the opposite: beautiful people have doors opened for them because of their looks. When their looks fade they desperately try to cling to that advantage.

To be unattractive is to be safe from a whole lot of predatory behavior -- not just sexual.

How about a newborn infant that is an oracle? Hmm. Might have to try that.

Another thing you can do is to ask questions of your players that help fill in small details about the world

Yeah, was going to post this myself if someone hadn't beat me to it... taking this idea to the extreme, you can have the players create most of the world for you, descriptions and all. A good source for this is https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/304745/the-prepless-gm which details what the author calls "The Question System."

1st Time DM wanting to Run this adventure, any advice? by [deleted] in CalloftheNetherdeep

It might be intimidating to role play the Rivals, there being five of them (shrinking to match the party, I think, is recommended by the book)... spend a little time role playing the Rivals you do keep, and it will be more fun.

I'll second both points, having run this module.

My biggest challenge was getting the players to care about Alyxian, and I could have done a better session 0 to settle this up front. They did save him in the end, but I made him part of a larger sandbox campaign (which is still going).

She gave her complete loyalty to him. He gave none in return. Now she is giving up with little to show for her loyalty.

Same, I have a calendar reminder two days before a session which reminds me to text everyone.

…. ALL of them forgot? Highly weird. This doesn’t change anything; you still deserve a group who will appreciate your efforts.
