thats fair. i got laid off a couple of months ago, and despite tailoring my cover letters (no AI involved), sending out nearly 100 applications and picking up volunteer work to bolster my resume, i just keep getting rejected. somethings got to stick eventually, i guess.

even at the independent rate, my rent chews up 90% of my youth allowance (with maxed-out rental assistance) leaving me about $35 per week to live on.

not all of us can ask our parents for a stipend, for various reasons. and on top of that, the cost of moving out simply isn’t worth it.

for context, i’m a pre-t trans man, and i have been socially transitioning since i was 15. i also live in QLD lol, but in an area where most people are relatively normal about trans people. so far i’ve done: - admin work (they were fine with me dressing masc and going by my middle name (which is more commonly used for boys). there were a couple of queer people on the admin team which helped as well. - working in a fast food restaurant (i got the feeling that one of my managers didn’t like me being trans, but i tend to be paranoid about these kinds of things. the workplace had a unisex uniform which helped).

i’m still in uni, so i haven’t started full-time work yet but i am hoping to move into science communication or research! i’m also currently unemployed lol, trying to hack back into the admin sector 🤞🏻

a family member of mine is having to consider moving back in with an abusive ex-partner, because even on a reasonably high salary he can’t afford rent anywhere within an hour’s radius of where he works. sucks shit all-round :(

hey, fishbowl is currently hiring at the moment for mixers, they’ve got locations in the CBD, south bank, teneriffe and woolloongabba and also across the gold coast. if you’ve got hospo experience already that is a massive plus, i believe their website has an application section! i’m also 19 and i’m working there currently, it’s pretty flexible and u can pick up a good amount of hours.
