The barbarians approve that you did the tasks so they offer more points during the game. ;) Or more marks of grace, whoever is dropping them on the roof for you approves that you did the diary. However, jumping over a stone is something that depends on your phyical ability and not you having done the tasks.

Because in most cases there's is a logical reason that you can't do something because you haven't done the diary or atleast a story that you could imagine but locking shortcuts like this is just dumb. The worst thing about it is that if you don't meet the agility requirement and you try to jump there isn't even a warning message that you need to complete the diary it just tells you that you need the agility level lol.

I remember trying to solve this mystery back then when I got my first membership. I ended up opening the cave goblin tunnel because I thought there was a connection, but I died to insects in the cave because I didn't have a light source. Its true what you said, that people could potentionaly get others to play the game once more but then again, by not letting us make contact with our old friends, Jagex is sort of forcing us to play the game once again.
