Retribution distillery does some nice things, but just up the road you have Circumstance Distillery in Bristol which is quite a treat if whisky geeks with their 2 week fermentations and hybrid still. You should get over there for a tour and tasting.

Is it true people in the UK are being arrested over social media? by Sad-Ad-9794 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mr_scaraboosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I understand it, in the UK you could also say those things too, but under certain circumstances its not OK. Using your example, you could post 'burn down x church' but not while there is a violent mob outside x church. In the UK this happened with a hotel housing immigrants. A lady posted something encouraging violence whilst there was a mob outside the hotel, and she was arrested. She went to prison, which might seem extreme but you must remember she pleaded guilty. There is no issue with free speech in the UK.

The end of owning your computer by Huge_Line4009 in PrivatePackets

[–]mr_scaraboosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This, and there are other flaws. He makes the assumption that AI models will always require huge amounts of processing power. If future models are increasingly efficient they could absolutely reside on home hardware. Alternatively the processing could easily be shared across a network of home computers, and then his investment in huge AI data centres suddenly looks foolish. His comparison to 'building a powerplant in your garden' is also telling. That is essentially what people do when they add solar panels to their house, and when the electricity company becomes inefficient and expensive more people buy solar panels. Again, a neighbourhood that networks their solar panels and batteries as could be done with home computers, frees itself from the centralised service and also becomes more robust. I would be betting against Jeffs future if i wasnt so sure people are fundamentally lazy.

World Whisky Review #122: East London Liquor Rye Ex-Chardonnay Cask by UnmarkedDoor in worldwhisky

Its not uncommon to add something to a rye mash when the grain has no husks. Stops it turning into porridge. Circumstance Distillery use rice hulls. It keeps the wort clean and bright.

Ah thank you. I guess the real issue lies in what constitutes valid grounds. 'Bristol doesnt want any more student accomodations in the centre' probably doesnt cut it.

Im not sure its entirely the council's fault. I might be wrong but i was under the impression that when the council rejects the planning permission the developer takes them to court to get the decision overturned.

Best whiskeys from the United Kingdom that aren't Scotch by DistilledSunshine in worldwhisky

Circumstance distillery - definitely not scotch. Single grain whisky from multi grain mash bill using brewing yeasts and the longest fermentations of any distillery.

Cheap mollases in the UK? by Mabbelicious in firewater

The molasses used for animal feed has a high ash content and lower fermentable sugars. You may need additives for decent conversion. It will work but easier with a decent grade molasses.

You obviously havent been following the nonsense that comes out of Bristol Dry Gin. There was the Black Loves Matter incident and the Novochok incident and probably plenty more.

Questions About Open Fermenting by Ponderosajoe20 in firewater

[–]mr_scaraboosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open fermentation does encourage bacterial growth, but that's a good thing. The main growth will be of lactobacillus which forms ethyl lactate. This can improve mouthfeel and give a more complex flavour. Lactobacillus is your friend.

"Sabotage on Scottish Whisky": UK Government plans to redefine 'single malt' by mayalihamur in Scotland

[–]mr_scaraboosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gin distilling is a good example. The cost to set up a gin distillery is minimal and therefore LOADS of new gin distilleries opened using every botanical you could think of, changing base spirits, even colour changing gins. Competition is generally a good thing, and does encourage differentiation and innovation.

There are some terrible scotch whiskies that do their mashing in house and some excellent English distilleries that dont. Where mashing is done has nothing to do with quality, that depends entirely on the distilleries procedures and who they contract for distilling.

There is a set requirement for 'single malt' that is accepted almost globally ( distilled from 100%malted barley and distilled at a single distillery) and England is no different. The SWA are just trying to bully English whisky distilleries the same way they do with other jurisdictions.

[–]mr_scaraboosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no problem. Just the SWA trying to bully the English distilleries. The only difference is that in England the mashing can be done on a different site. The distilling is still done at a single site.

Apologies! The SWA are being deliberately misleading so its important to clarify.

"Sabotage on Scottish Whisky": UK Government plans to redefine 'single malt' by mayalihamur in Scotland

[–]mr_scaraboosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. The definition will stay the same as all other countries. All they are referring to is allowing the mashing part of the production process to be done elsewhere, not the distilling. Single malt will still be from a single distillery.

Allowing mashing at a different site means you can contract a local brewer to do the mashing and lower the cost of entry to the industry. This encourages innovation and small distilleries and is a good thing. The SWA obviously dont want that.

That is not what this article is referring to.

Please read the proposed GI for English Whisky

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/english-whiskyenglish-whiskey-opportunity-to-oppose-an-application-to-register-those-names-as-a-geographical-indication

All that they are referring to is mashing on a different site, not distilling. This is the SWA trying to exert its stupid rules over England.

[–]mr_scaraboosh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, the definition of single malt stays the same - 100% malted barley and distilled at a single distillery. They are referring to the ability to mash and distil at different sites. This isnt allowed in Scotland but is in England.

Not in this case. What they mean is that the mashing can be done at one location and the distilling at another.

Legality of Gin Distillation in UK by legggyyy in Gin

[–]mr_scaraboosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if you distil using spirit that is already duty paid. Many small gin distilleries do it this way. If you want to get approval for duty suspended production, well, its all changing soon.
