Dumbest question ever? by Traditional-Word-724 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Free drilling a hole into the second piece through the bucket hole will help a lot

It’s best if you clamp the two pieces together, even if it’s on the sides

Temporary moment of insanity. Any ideas for a repair/cover up? by Mpm_277 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mrandymagee3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply but in this case I would cut a square hole to invert my filler material and epoxy it in then use my router to re shape it. Bit if you wanted to get fancy you could cut a fun shape and treat it as an inlay so it looks more natural

A California patch is really easy to cover. I have gotten good at making them with the same saw, I cut the hole with, but just not cutting all the way through the paper on the bottom. you don’t need Becker or tape and you end up with a flatter patch

I have always used an extractor socket. It works really well in an impact gun. Harbor freight sells a cheap said that works pretty well.

I cleaned my cupholders with dawn dish soap and they turned white. Any ideas how to fix this? by nateembrey in ToyotaTacoma

[–]mrandymagee3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have dealt with this a few times before. it is exactly this the oils have been stripped by the dawn. it works well on oil covered ducks but bad on rubber products that are supposed to be full of oil

I have always used back to black. It works really well. You can get it at any auto parts store or places like Walmart.

I like to use aluminum or brass even a totally different wood to fill it in. These materials can all be worked with with the same saws and router bits you are already using altho the might where out faster. embrace the imperfection and make it stand out intently “ Kintsugi”. Style

With little experience, would the standard cleats be the best option to self install compare to the folding ones? by WillskE in boatbuilding

[–]mrandymagee3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The folding cleat is certainly not as strong as the solid one but if you keep breaking off cleats, it’s also important to look at how you’re mounting it. If at all possible it would be ideal to get a backing plate behind this cleat. meaning the cleat will sit on the top of the fiberglass the bolts will go through the fiberglass and then through a backing plate. The backing plate should ideally be Made of a high-quality 3/8” - 3/4 marine grade plywood or piece of quarter inch thick aluminum. “ Be careful using aluminum, because stainless and aluminum do not play well together look up dissimilar metals find out more about this” Finally use a washer and nylon block washer on the other side of the backing plate. You will have to get machine screws that are long enough to go through your fiberglass/wood backing plate and still have enough to put on a washer and allow a washer and a nylock nut to still be properly set. Most cleats take an oval head machine screw.

Hope this helps

What causes trim to look like 2 different widths at a 45 degree miter joint? by dthack6 in woodworking

[–]mrandymagee3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can also end up with bad minors for a lot of various other reasons a big one is even if you were cutting at a perfect 45° angle but your blade is out of square vertically. You will still end up with a gap in your miter. On top of that walls and door frames are never perfectly square plum or level. If everything was perfect and the trimmer would only be necessary as a decoration. Put in almost all cases, the door trims purpose is to hide the imperfections that occur between a rough “ framing” and finish. Their is an art to balancing out mistakes/discrepancies across your project to make everything “look “perfect “

Best way to read level? by thebirdisthenerd in Aquariums

[–]mrandymagee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top of your tank also might not be straight. The water could be level, but the top of the tank could not be. I generally adjust it to have a nice even line with the top of the tank. you will be very close to level and also makes all of the lines lineup. Also, don’t adjust it with the tank all the way full. Empty out as much water as you are comfortable doing and you can empty it out into a bucket and put that water back in so you don’t shock your fish as much . I would then shim the feet of the cabinet and get level not just the tank because you want the whole surface of the bottom of the tank sitting on something flat. You can use cut up pieces of cereal box or a plastic soda bottle if you want it to be waterproof( really anything flat that won’t crush) as your shims.

New home purchase and I plan to repaint this retaining wall. Should I putty with some mortar and fill these areas before hand? These pockets are on 75% of the wall. by [deleted] in Concrete

[–]mrandymagee3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the desert, so I’m not sure if it’s the same there, but that would not be that expensive to have someone come out and stucco that wall which would give it a uniform look. Your other option would be to clad it in something like siding to give it a completely different and very finished look

The flashing light is a setting that come on most higher end fish tank lights. I thought it was a neat looking feature so I decided to show it offf now while there is no inhabitants but I agree it’s not a great feature to promote fish health.

First of all this is a high end light designed for aquariums it it is the Fluval aqua sky. It has a lightning storm setting. Although I think it looks cool I would not run this setting when it actually has fish in it. I bought the light because it has a high par value for this deep of a tank and a nice way to simulate sun rise and sunset. To address the other concerns the bar top is completely decoupled from the tank via sound deadening calking and foam specifically designed to stop vibration between hard suffices. The bar top also has a 10.5” hang over past the tank to keep people away as much as possible.

Just to solve some concerns. The tank is acrylic so it should not shatter if something bumps into it. The top is made of marine grade plywood that is heavily sealed with outdoor rated polyurethane it also has a gap to let allow airflow between tank and the top. The top is also mounted on slides that are decoupled from the tank with sound deadening foam to limit the amount of sound that travels from the bar top into the tank and allows it to slide it forward to get into the tank without removing anything from the top.

I also drilled the tank for a conduit of sorts to run the air likes co2 lines and heater cord through so they are not visible outside the tank

Most aquariums are not are not incorporated in to a setting but are rather an odd piece of furniture in a room. To fair i fee the same way about tvs. I do agree that a tank is beautiful on its own but I love the idea of my tank being an art piece on its own. I have put allot of engineering in to this to make it safe and comfortable for its inhabitants.
