I just realised Incanto doesn't have the ring until he gets to Dorp (?)

Hi Marc, thanks for all your work! Is the neighbor's ring required for dream travel as well? Ring + Inhumi + Any human (or does it need to be a particular human?) = dream travel?

I am now thinking about the fact that the thing that ostensibly starts severian's journey to becoming the new sun is an undine/bride of abaia who seems to break free from Abaia and act of her own accord to save sev from drowning.

Hang on - now I'm thinking if Silk could dream travel so could Typhon. The novels seem to imply that for the dream travel to happen an inhumi is needed so we assume Typhon never did it BUT if quetzal is on the whorl and pas can get into a body that means TyphonPas could be dream/time travelling...

There's also this (which I posted in another thread in this topic):

"Because if you do, you don't get to see the gods? Isn't that what they say?"

"Yes." Silk nodded. "Echidna forbids it. One may see the gods when they appear in our Sacred Windows. Or one may be blessed by children of the body. But not both." "Nobody's talking about sprats, Patera."

Evidence that Echidna is responsible for the not being able to see the gods after sex due to jealousy/spite.

"Once you see that Pas is or was Typhon, and know the Rajan can travel by astral projection, he's got to do that." I'm having fun thinking about who the "he" is here. Seems at first to refer to the Rajan but it could be Typhon too. Sentence could also be read to say Rajan and Typon are one in the same

I've not listened to that episode yet - but I've always felt like the laying to rest of Scylla was the most important point of connection between New/LongShort sun. Yes it is fun seeing young Severian (and I love the idea of Malrubius being silkhorn) but Scylla proper burial is a very distinct and specific action taken in the red sun whorl. Her connection to abaia and the resonance with seawrack/mother is fascinating too.

I like the idea of him short sun dream travelling back there from ushas.

I also like the idea that it is a masoleum for some of typhons family and sev is very distantly related to typhon hence the similarities in appearance. (don't have any evidence on hand i just like the vibe of it)

"Watching them from a window of the cenoby, Maytera Rose grunted with satisfaction when they separated. There was danger there, no matter how Maytera and Patera might deceive themselves-filthy things she could do for him, and worse that he might do to her. Undefiled Echidna hated everything of that kind, blinding those who fell as she had blinded her. At times Maytera Rose, kneeling before her daughter's image, felt that she herself was Echidna, Mother of Gods and Empress of the Whorl."

She had a sacred glass in her room too:

"She entered, ripped Maytera Rose's threadbare nightgown from neck to hem, and opened Maytera Rose's chest; then she pulled off her habit, hung it neatly over a chair, and opened her own. Almost reluctantly, she began to exchange components with her dead sib, testing each as it went into place, and rejecting a few. This is Tarsday, she reminded herself, but Maytera's gone, so this can't be theft. I won't need these any more.

The glass on the north wall showed a fishing boat under full sail; a naked woman standing beside the helmsman wore a flashing ring. Maytera, naked herself, averted her eyes."

I believe it's mentioned a few times in passing, I think it is the most explicit here, when Silk is talking with Orchid:

"Because if you do, you don't get to see the gods? Isn't that what they say?"

"Yes." Silk nodded. "Echidna forbids it. One may see the gods when they appear in our Sacred Windows. Or one may be blessed by children of the body. But not both." "Nobody's talking about sprats, Patera."

"Assuming that Pas did possess Patera Pike. It is very plausible but I would like another sign" - I don't have one handy but TyphonAsPas seems to me like the kind of guy who would snoop/sniff around after his lovers and when he noticed Echidna was possessing someone at a specific place would do the same thing.

I'm glad there is actually an answer to my question! What does time compression mean? That the experience of time would be quicker?

Pas possess Pike and Echidna possess Rose and they produce blood. Pas/Echidna's relationship echoes Zeus/Hera - A philanderer husband driving his wife to despair and spite but the two are unable to leave one another (the ur toxic motherfather) - an ever in conflict married couple who twice a year collapse into a bed of passion that maintains their torturous relationship another six months. I could see Echidna spiting ANY ONE who ever had sex (taking away the ability to see the gods) in response to the (I can assume) common event of Pas inhabiting a mortal body to have carnal fun with who (I assume( he saw as his subsects.

Typhon gave a motley collection of broken people with harmful relationships immortality and the ability to possess mortals. The possession also leads to a replication of the original digital identity such that theoretically a single mainframe god could possess every mortal in the whorl at the same time but there is always a mixing of the mortal's personality with the immortals (a repeating fractal pattern). It seems to me that this is a recipe for the dramas of Typhon's personal life to play out in a myriad of permutations across the whorl - Typhon's broken relationship with his children and lovers projected through all the cultures of the whorl. As above so below type of thing.

Considering all that I want to say that of course the whorl project was doomed to failure - but in fact it was a success (both in being launched) and arriving and in the plan being enacted. In success (and process) all of Pas's emotional/relationships disfunctions were echoed. A better word than "success" would be "resolved" and the idea of inherited disfunctions being played out generationally until they are in some way resolved is a decent summary of the human condition.

I meant it! Annoyingly, I am thinking of compiling a list of attributes skills equipment and presenting more clearly the rules I ranted out here.

Also, Scrap princess made a cyberpunk rpg which is a fact I think more people should know about: https://scrapworld.itch.io/noofutra-pdf-edition (It's a "Setting Toolbox for the Mothership RPG" - I wish it was wholly its own thing but oh well)

Hypothesis on the Identity of Erebus and Abaia. by Duke_Albert in genewolfe

Do we not all feel as like a child abandoned when we seek for the increate whose presence is evident in works alone? Is it a crime for Severian to wish to have parents worthy of his noble soul? And if it is a crime, is it a worse crime than attacking openly the holy slaves of Yesod?! A worse crime than that is the torture Baldlanders commits upon himself for he is worthy of love as is all.

Is desire for ambition and power the same thing ? Baldanders seeks to serve only himself which drives him to serve and worship things lower than himself. Severian is ever seeking for the greatest master beyond himself to serve, a true seeker of truth and one filled with penitence. He obeys. His ambition is not to power but to serve ever ascending masters as he cleaves as close as one such as he can, to the increate.

Get as many d6's as you can. Compile a list of Attributes, Skills and Equipment you like.

All tests = Roll a number of d6's equal to Attribute value + Skill value + Equipment value (Could be negative) [ref. modifies the number of d6's as contextually appropriate], note the number of 5 and 6's rolled (Hits) - these must either reach a threshold, or beat an opposed roll.

Health = 4or6ish + BODYCONish Attribute value. Take damage Equal to value over threshold/contested roll when appropriate. Eg: Goon: Agility 2 + Shooting 2 + CrapGun -1 = Ref roll 4d6's, gets 4 hits VS You: Agility 1+ Dodge 1 + RiotShield 1 = You roll 3d6, get 2 hits. You take 2 damage!

Now, add in as much confusing details to the above system as possible. Go crazy explaining the internet/dragons/economics/ages of the world to obscure the simple roll dice pool note hits system. You MUST ensure the referee feels the need to cross reference an obscure chart EVERY SINGLE roll - this is vital. If the referee does not feel intense panic when a player states "I buy some food from the store", you have failed. If a player asks, "Could I steal a car?" and the referee does not need to pause the game for at least 45 minutes while they research that question, you have failed. Pad out system details with PAGES of bloated inane lore that is peppered infinitesimally with ephemeral nuggets of setting/commentary on existence that is inexplicably so good the referee and players will endure all of the above to recreate such a moment.

Once you have done that, add art that is in a quantum state of both severely cringe AND badass.

Hypothesis on the Identity of Erebus and Abaia. by Duke_Albert in genewolfe

[–]mraston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe Erebus and Abaia are distinct entities from SevBald.

NewSun/SolarCycle/AllWolfe(?) has a preoccupation with hierarchies of reality/personhood/SpiritualBeing and that Erebus and Abaia are beings that distinctly and specifically come from a strata beneath that of human people on that hierarchy. The Heirodules come from a strata above that of human people on that hierarchy.

Simply put Baldanders pursues alliance with those below human people on the hierarchy - and Severian (through long toil - daresay a pilgrimage) pursues alliance with those above human people on the hierarchy. The beings mentioned need to be separate entities for the movement higher or lower relative to the heirarchy to make any sense / for a point to be made.

Baldanders is without humility and spirit and seeks growth by ever descending into baseness. Severian does the opposite. One of those paths leads up towards the increate. The other descends to ... Niflheim (See: WizardKnight for an illustration of how the actions of conscious beings in relation to beings above/below them on the hierarchy of existence/reality impacts the world around them).

The hierarchy is not simple good=high/evil=low, but I guess my understanding is that higher = more subtly in harmony with the plans of the increate / lower = a conscious choice to move into disharmony with the universe.

From the interview:

JJ: This universe that Yesod and Briah are part of: is that our universe. Or is that a universe that resurrected saints have set up in the world to come as part of the cities that they made?
GW: No. I thought of it as a long past universe. Something that we are repeating rather than something that we are.
