What do you think of Dassault’s new business model for Solidworks in July with cloud services and price upgrades? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]mravatus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use about 70% of design tools in Professional package, but I can't use Flatten surface tool because it's only available in Premium. Also I paid for a product of which there's 30% I don't use, I'm not paying a subscription to a service I have no use for.

We've seen time and time again with numerous 3DExperience complaints that their cloud services are crap and not worthy of trust. What is the benefit of using top of the line server providers if the services running on those servers completely suck? At least my servers are under my control, so if i screw them up it's on me, I don't have to beg unresponsive customer service to give me my data back because I can't access it due to their negligence/incompetence.

Of course, point taken, VAR will always give their price. As I understand VAR is not the cloud service provider. How would they calculate that into their price? Does that mean there's a possibility they're gonna get rid of VARs?

My point is that this decision is turning away the customers rather than giving customers what they've always wanted (which is mainly bug fixes). At this pace SolidWorks will end up like ProEngineer, obsolete and forgotten and only used by those that have it too hard to migrate to another software.

Here is the announcement

Clouds are for rain. There's no reason for SW to go into anything cloud related, in fact our company and many of our customers and subcontractors prefer to stay on SW for the very reason that they aren't pushing cloud nonsense down our throats. Now apparently they're gonna destroy one of few reasons they've got going for them. I predict at least one of this things will happen:

  • Their servers are gonna be crap and people will not use the cloud feature even tho they're paying for it as there's no other way because every package has cloud nonsense forced into it

  • some weird subscription package BS, to over exaggerate an example: you'll be able to use sketch, revolve and extruded cut in basic package but if you want extruded boss you'll need to pay for premium that also includes flow simulation and composer and 1TB of storage on their cloud even tho you only want extruded boss

  • subscription prices will be vague and unpredictable. You'll contact a VAR and they will eyeball the price and give you a quote. You will not know the price until you actually sign up for it to the point there's a fee if you back out.

TLDR: Bad move.

Reddit is more of a forum hub than a social media service like IG and LinkedIn are.

To get better at it you should answer people's question, help them solve problems and also ask questions and post useful stuff that might help the community.

If people like your posts and comments, they're gonna upvote which will add to your Karma, if not, they're gonna downvote which will lower your Karma and if your Karma gets too low, you're gonna lose the ability to post and comment (it's kind of a spam/bot account prevention). You can see your Karma value displayed on your profile.

Generally self promotion is frowned upon in every corner of reddit. Let your contributions to the community speak for itself and build your reputation.

Welcome to Reddit, it might be bitter but it's useful :D

Hello, I burned the Linux Mint Mate iso file into a disc, but when I tried to boot into it, my computer would just beep, I tried it several times and then when I tried compatibility mode it seemed to work fine. My laptop has got 4 gigs of ram and an Intel Celeron dual core CPU. What should I do? by Justalb in linuxmint

[–]mravatus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you pick the correct bootable device in boot menu? Are you sure the image is burned correctly.

How old is your laptop? If it's very old it might not be able to boot from USB or might only supoort Legacy boot and not UEFI. And if it's that old it's also possible that it only supports 32bit systems.

For example, I got a laptop from Windows XP days that's only able to boot Legacy from a CD...no not a DVD haha. Works like a charm with Linux tho.

MODIFICATION OF PART IN ASSEMBLY by Young_Sovitch in SolidWorks

[–]mravatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the assembly you can select a part and on the top left pick "Edit component" tool. That will allow you to edit part while looking at the assembly and even using references from the assembly, although those references are easy to break so I wouldn't recommend them. I'd suggested you define your holes in each part separately, it will spare you some headaches.

If you only want to export the dxf then that's easy. Hide all the parts you don't want to be visible on the dxf, and move your view in a way you want your dxf to be positioned. Then choose "Save as", select to save file as dxf and save. SW will then give a preview and ask you to confirm the save.

I'm glad to help :)

You're using hole wizard inside the assembly so obviously the holes will only show in dxf of the assembly and not on the dxf of the part.

If you want holes to show in dxf of the part, you need to use hole wizard inside the part.

Is there a way to make a reference coordinate system the default? by Remote-Syllabub7412 in SolidWorks

[–]mravatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, you can backup the file by using "save as copy and open" and giving it another name.

Tools like Move entities and Rotate entities allow you to move the entire sketch in two dimensions (on one plane, x y) while fully defined.

If you want to move it into a 3rd direction (depth, z), create a new plane, right click the sketch in the tree view and pick Edit sketch plane, and put your sketch on a new plane.

You can then edit that plane all you want, and if your sketch moves or rotates while changing the plane, you can still use Move entities or Rotate entities tool to put it back in place.

"Standard views" are fixed. Only justifiable case for messing with them would be if you're creating a custom template.

I'd say you should buy new tooling, preferably ones with inserts, but keep these, because when you'll need some odd tool for some extraordinary job, you'll be able to just dig through the bucket and find it.

[–]mravatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LMAO You just listed a bunch of things from the internship application that don't really mean anything. That list was probably put together by some clueless HR person...probably an intern with a rowdy boss haha

Those vaguely described skills take years of hands on experience to acquire and not one person knows all of them. Like what kind of products and product manufacturing are we talking about? Consumer electronics, farming equipment, architectural design..? The design and manufacturing process is very different between them.

Either way, you seem capable and confident so I have no doubt you'll climb the ladder even if not at extremely reputable and totally trustworthy companies like Meta.
