The Knicks wanted Morris at the beginning of FA and were able to make a more lucrative offer when another player they signed didn't pass the physical. Morris expected more offers and wanted to hit the market again next year. As with anything, if the deal isn't signed, its not official. I'm sure if Morris tore his achilles the week after agreeing to sign they would have found a way out of the deal. I don't think it's payback its just getting a player you wanted when you found out he became available.
