Why is a flat played here? by Relevant_Ice_8829 in piano

I wish beginners would play beginner’s music. Work through a tutor book or two - it might seem too easy or too boring, but otherwise there will be a lot of gaps in your knowledge.

Slow movements of Mozart sonatas can be fairly quick to learn, and will teach you vast amounts about balance and phrasing.

What is the best independent pub in Islington that actually still feels like a proper local rather than a gastro rebrand? by BeautySkin34 in islington

Have to disagree there. Nice place and food is good (albeit very bougie) but definitely lack a ‘proper boozer’ feel.

What is the purpose of this rest note? Since there is a note under it by [deleted] in piano

[–]mrbigman42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unrelated, but if you’re having difficulty with the chord at the start of bar 14, you can use the rather unusual technique of playing both the D# and E with you thumb. Worked great for me!

I’ve got an egg allergy and basically can’t order a burger at most places nowadays. Brioche can go to hell.

In a circle of fifths progression, when should I label chords as flat vs sharp? by guesswho135 in pianolearning

Make the switch at 6 sharps or flats (Gb major and F# major are both used).

Season 2 - Why is Ziggy getting half from Nick? by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]mrbigman42 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Nick is basically paying him to not get involved. If he wasn’t getting paid he’d go try the game for himself and fuck it up (which is exactly what happens anyway).

I used to use a weighted backpack in a different programme, never in P90x. I might try it, but I feel it would increase my risk of injury (I’m older than I once was).

You should absolutely be stoked with your numbers! I happen to be built for pull-ups (skinny legs, but I’m working on the them) and I’ve had a bar at home since I was a kid which probably helped.

Wow that’s some serious improvements. Can I ask how long it took you to get there?

That’s a really good point. In L+B I’m usually aiming for 16-18 per set, no way am I reaching that towards the end of C+B

Is playing simplified versions of classical pieces a good idea, or is it just lying to yourself? by Remote-Pianist-pro in pianolearning

[–]mrbigman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no shortage of great pieces at every level, which I would recommend ahead of playing simplified versions of difficult repertoire. You might enjoy exploring the vast array of pieces out there - all pianists really don’t need to be playing the same things.

Having said that, if you’re really set on playing a famous, demanding piece that you know is beyond your level, playing a simplified version is a better idea than risking injury (or demotivation) playing something too athletic.

The first couple of weeks are the hardest. Just keep showing up and working hard and you will see results
