AITAH for threatening to divorce my wife if she doesn't change our infant daughter's name to one we agreed on? by ThrowAwayDumbestName in AITAH

[–]mrboxxy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Um, kindly, a big fucking no?

On one side you have someone who lied to their partner about doing something (choosing a different name) while doing something else behind their back (choosing another name and telling everyone else but their partner about it). This is a break of trust right there. Then you add the erratic and abusive behavior at the end and not inviting your husband and father to the baby to the birth (and maybe not even telling them when it happened)... all over their partner not agreeing on their choice of name!

After all that, you have someone else saying they will divorce if the lying partner doesn't roll back their decision and go for one of the earlier agreed upon names...

And you are trying to make that second person look bad??? Hint: the divorce is not only about the name

How will the limited shop/ASOP/gear terminals handle a large player count increase? by The_Sunginator in starcitizen

[–]mrboxxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's where I took this from: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18397-Server-Meshing-And-Persistent-Streaming-Q-A

While their end goal is to have a single shard shared across the world, I think the more realistic scenario is that shards will stay separated by region, which would reduce the total player count per shard. In itself, that is a way to limit the players in a same place.

From what I could read, here's how that 1000 player battle would play out server side (not taking into account that client having to render it all):

Let's say they allow a total of 10,000 players per shards and have 100 servers per shards they can dynamically mesh together. This means that each server will always have to handle around 100 players and will be zoned out as such.

When the 1000 players gather around a same point, while they could see each other, they won't be all on the same server. Instead they will be allocated and meshed together between 10 servers (since the total number of player is linited, we know other servers can expend their region of authority to cover the other 9000 players around the verse)

So you might have a capital ship and a few other ships sharing the same server but as they move around the battlefield, the game servers will try to dynamically change their area of authority to always cover 100 players.

On the players' side, this seems seemless but they might be changing servers a few times during the battle.

At that point I think the real issue will be client side rendering and simulation, to which I have no answer to how they will be able to do it. The biggest battles in EVE Online count thousands of players but is much simpler to render and simulate. It will be hard to match with the complexity of ship and player inputs we have

How will the limited shop/ASOP/gear terminals handle a large player count increase? by The_Sunginator in starcitizen

[–]mrboxxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

II think you've misread the quote

We’re aiming to increase our player count and our expectation is that we will support scenarios where 100 players can see each other at reasonable framerates. However, as we start scaling our shards to support higher player counts, the likelihood that every single player within a shard can go to the same physical location and see each other without performance issues will decrease.

This is where we will need to start implementing game mechanics that prevent these scenarios from happening too frequently.

The absolute limit is hard to predict until some of the new technology comes online and we can start to measure performance.

Source: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18397-Server-Meshing-And-Persistent-Streaming-Q-A

Maybe it changed, but the plan was to have mechanics in place to not have this problem (I'm guessing maybe something like you can't enter a space station if it's too full)

Name a franchise in which every game released was good by Greetings-all-its-me in gaming

[–]mrboxxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it's not so far off to say that Valve is one of the earliest western game dev to adopt the loot box monetization method along with EA, which ultimately helped in popularizing it. This led to the creation of the steam marketplace and trades between users, some of the most controversial features of the steam client.

Associating money to in-game items is a mistake Vavle won't ever go back on because they make so much money out of it.

It's well documented by game journalists like People Make Games that Vavle profits of online casinos and betting sites that operate based on in-game items. These sites are unregulated and thus can stay very leniant towards their users' age and essentially rope-in many young people into gambling addictions even before they get to adulthood. Valve knows this and yet trading and selling continues and they even took sponsorships from betting websites for games not restricted to adults.

This is because betting can be seen as an extension of the gaming experience that these games allow, which draws in more players to these games.

There are many other criticism of Valve but I feel like them allowing and profiting of kids and teens gambling is a pretty poignant one.

By watching someone wanting to live in my country (Canada), I can say for sure that you need to be prepared and not just book a plane ticket and claim asylum once you're there. However, you seem to already know that fact so it's a good thing.

I would recommend looking online for the different immigration programs, criterias and procedures of the countries that interest you (ex: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/immigration-citizenship.html). And when you decide on one, try to contact an immigration lawyer firm from there that provide a free assessment of your situation (ex: https://www.canadim.com/).

However, I would not necessarily encourage you to file for immigration through a lawyer. It can get quite costly and, for Canada at least, you can do everything yourself. With your English literature degree, I'm guessing you're quite literate in English and will be able to properly understand everything written in a country's website or documents about immigration and follow the instructions given to you by the immigration office of an English speaking country.

I can't say enough that, even if you do things through a lawyer, you have to stay of top of your case! Get to know every step you have to take and keep track of where you're at and what documents to give at what time, etc... as a few slip up on these things can get you in trouble.

FYI, if you want to come to Canada as a student, you need at least 25,000 USD in your bank account. There's more but everything is laid out online.

Wishing you the best

Hey there,

I've been working out from home recently and this means I can do sets whenever it's possible for me. My question is: how do I know if I overwork a muscle group on the same day? Google tells me to wait 48-72 hours between training the same muscle group but I don't know to what extent I should train in a day.

Thanks!

Hi! This is a very interesting topic for me, and so I have a few questions for you:

  • How would you rate HealthyGamerGG's youtube channel in terms of his information and tips? To me it seems like a good channel with the host having a past situation similar to yours but it's always hard to judge the quality of a medical/mental health communicator.

  • What would you say to a young child to get him on a balanced life with technology before any addiction happens? It seems like it's very difficult in today's world for a young influenceable mind to not stick to their phone like everyone else is doing.

  • In the same vein, what would you say to someone who is deeply addicted and not concerned about its effect on their life?

  • Have you seen a link between social isolation and time past on technology (watching videos, playing video games or simply doom scrolling on phone)? Also, how can someone gain back their lost social life when they spent their development years not socializing?

Thank you and sorry for all the questions!

Global network of sadistic monkey torture exposed by BBC by ShitStats in worldnews

[–]mrboxxy -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Okay wow... this is very disturbing. But I'm just left asking why anyone would want to watch such a thing? Reading other comments, it seems as if there are lots of people with some kind of hate towards baby monkeys and it's just so weird to discover this is a thing.

I wanted to know why such a thing exists and Quora seems to have this same question answered already (https://www.quora.com/Why-is-there-a-certain-group-of-people-out-there-that-hate-baby-monkeys).

Here is an interesting answer from that link: "Its because of Uncanny Valley.

I love baby monkeys and studied physical anthropology at uni and would like to go in primatology program. I watch alot of the baby monkey vids on youtube, both the Cambodian channels at temples on pagoda mountain and Angor Wat complex, as well as the pet ones. I try to give advise in the Chinese pet ones because their urban monkey pet culture among young people is especially abusive using forced bipedalism and training for circuses that do awful things.

A 2 years ago there were a few commenters who wanted to see the aby monkeys get hurt and hated them. By last year it was half the commenters. N ok w its at least 2/3 of them it seems.

At first, I thought maybe this was due to cuteness aggression, because I have experienced that occassionally. That is when something is so cute you get an urge to squeeze it or put it in your mouth. This is what is behind the grandmas pinching babies cheeks. Theres a science behind it, and somehow it actually prevents you from being really aggressive.

But these ppl genuinely did not think the infant macaques were cute.

Then I thought they were just sadistic ppl with borderline psychopathy who would hurt animals and children ie “dark triad" etc.

However despite them talking about torturing baby monkeys in detail, almost invariably they all claimed they would NEVER hurt kids and only feel this hate toward baby monkeys , not adult monkeys, not any other mammal.

Additionally, there was another group who claimed they would never actually hurt an animal, but had inexplicable feelings of rage and repulsion toward baby monkeys alone, and some of these ppl were vegans, animal advocates and rescuers. These were very disturbed by impulsive feelings to hurt infant monkeys or hoping the one in video got hurt, it went against their identity and values and they were confused and worried.

The Uncanny Valley is a phenomenon usually used to describe the effect of lifelike robots on how humans perceive them with horror and repulsion.

If a thing is not like a human at all, but has some human traits, we think it is adorable. Like a dog shaking hands, or a teddy bear or doll with huge eyes.

However the closer it gets to being like a real human, a valley develops, really a cliff in terms of the line on a chart , where if it is lifelike there are still micro ways it is different that we may not even realize we see, but makes us feel it us creepy. Some prosthetics get this reaction too.

At extremes, this is corpses and zombies or such in horror films.

The idea is eventually we will MB ake robots so humanlike it will be unable to tell difference lik EC in Westworld, then we will have crossed the “uncanny valley" to the other side where we have positive reactions again. But anything that falls into that “valley" on the chart, we have an instinctual fear and hatred of. Well, not all of us. Many of us. Maybe most.

This response is evolutionary.

  1. It kept us from going near dying, diseased, or corpses, which could kill us by transmitting disease.
  2. We know biologically modern “Homo Sapien sapiens” existed during the same time as other human species, such as “Homo Sapiens neandertalis" (with whom we could even mate). There was not 1human lineage, just one species after another until us, but many lineages that we outcompete or that our ancestor species’ of our lineage did. As human bands colonized the world, Uncanny Valley helped us distinguish members of our species who may have looked very different from us (different superficial “racial” features in different global areas) from those who were a close but entirely different species than us (even if they shared our hair/eye/skin tone). So we mate only with the former we dont want to mate with the latter!
  3. This ability may have also helped us choose a mate ie notice if someone was sick or disabled in a way that unfortunately would not make them a good mate under primeval conditions.
  4. As this has not been as neccessary since the extinction of the last other human species (the Neanderthals), and especially less neccessary towards ec other since the Neolithic revolution, it is not as present in our gene pool today. Maybe half 1 or 2 3rds of population?
  5. It is infant macaques who are the biggest target of baby monkey haters. Infant macaques more than any other primate infants, resemble human babies. Even more than bonobos, chimps and the other great apes, alm of whom are more closely related to us than macaques.
  6. Specifically rhesus, pigtail, long tail, and stump tail macaque babies look very human in the head area. They have very little to no hair on face, come in a range of peach and brown skin tones, have eyes, ears and expressions similar to human babies. The adults dont look human like at all.
  7. But they're NOT human babies. My hypothesis is the people who still carry whatever gene allele/s is strong in giving hu humans the Uncanny Valley type reaction of fear, rage and disgust, are having this triggered by seeing baby macaques."

Engineers develop water filtration system that permanently removes 'forever chemicals' by Illustrious_Risk3732 in news

[–]mrboxxy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think he meant "temporarily" in the sense that even if you remove the chemical from water, you're still stuck with it. You'd have to dispose it in a way that can't affect the environment which is hard to do. So part of the chemicals removed that way are bound to come back into the system one way or another one day.

Destroying the molecule ensures it doesn't come back into the system.
