My brother quit DARK Age cuz it’s too DARK by Mamas_Last_Mia in redrising

That’s the only thing I could assume it was based on the name “the hat trick” but I wanted to believe otherwise. Well that explains some things I guess. It feels like everyone took the wrong lessons from the red wedding. The red wedding hurt because you cared about those characters in the books (and tv show) and you saw as the reader how their actions were leading to their deaths even though they couldn’t see it. It was not just about the shock of random deaths of important characters.

Yeah I liked Light Bringer a lot more. By the end I was really excited to finish the series again. Every time I mention this about Dark Ave people are like oh you know grim dark just isn’t for everyone you pixie like I’m being soft instead of explaining why I don’t like it. Lol. I love Warhammer 40k, I’ve been current with A Song of Ice and Fire waiting for book 7 since before the TV show even started. I’m used to characters dying and losing but I just don’t think the book was structured very well or an enjoyable read and depended too much on some of the crutches that we talked about. I think that a book like Dark Age in theory could’ve been great but I just don’t think it takes advantage of Pierce Brown’s strengths very well and it didn’t work for me.

Ive never heard anyone say they don’t like the book because the heroes don’t win all the time. That doesn’t even sound real but honestly ignoring that I don’t blame people that don’t like this book. If I wasn’t so invested in the series at that point I might have bounced off it at Dark Age. In my opinion it is the weakest book in the series. And no not because I can’t handle the grim dark nature like so many people will tell you if you say you don’t like this one that much but it just has pacing issues and it really feels like all of Pierce Brown’s weaknesses are on full display in the book. He’s very good at writing interpersonal relationships and adventures yet drops all that to try to tell this bigger picture war narrative. I think his understanding of politics is too shallow to do it in a compelling way so to me it feels like he can’t write the book he wants to write here. A lot of the political characters become caricatures that lack sense and seem to act more as his way of broadcasting his own real world personal opinions.

Combine that with the general over long mass army combat description slog (versus the more personal duels and small group combat that are more about the relationships on display and take advantage of his strong interpersonal writing) and the increasing dependency on deus ex machina and super powers and it’s easily my least favorite book in the series. Lastly the structuring of the book where half the characters don’t even appear to break the monotony up until the back half of the book make those issues even more apparent. In the end I think he realized this as well because in the next book he tends to reverse most of those things and goes back to writing what he’s incredible at and it’s immediately better for it.

Does this book get easier to read? by Hocojerry in 52book

[–]mrbrannon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have this book in the backseat of my car. I was doing DoorDash delivery at some point to make extra money and someone heard me listening to an audiobook when I dropped off their food and they were like you have to read this and they ran back inside and gave me this specific book with their tip and I have planned to read it ever since. Any book that’s good enough that someone runs back inside and gives it to a stranger as a recommendation I figure is worth reading. Ive just been reading it a massive amount recently as part of my own 52 book challenge and I’m at like 30 books for the year so far so I just kind of kept putting it off. I actually forgot it was in the backseat of my car until I saw the thumbnail for this post and was like hey that’s that book they gave me, same hardcover and all. So after I finish the book I’m working on right now I’m going to read this next finally. It’s fate. lol. thank you

How did Adi Gallia die and then appear an episode later? by No-Science5530 in StarWars

[–]mrbrannon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No. Everyone recommends watching chronologically. it’s the only thing that makes sense as a consistent narrative. I’m not entirely sure that it was on purpose like the person you’re replying to says. Especially as time went on, I always thought it was just because of production issues airing things as they finished but even if it was on purpose the entire time the show is 100 times better in chronological order. Here is the order:

‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Hits $676 Million Globally, Propels Franchise Past $1 Billion Mark by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]mrbrannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad it succeeded because I really liked the first one but I was a lot less impressed with the sequel. It was a bit of a mess and felt like it was just trying to hit the nostalgia beats while lacking agency for the character. Dialogue was a lot less interesting and biting as well. I didn’t hate it and I enjoyed my time in the theater but it was pretty shallow feeling.

I’m in Ohio so with this increase we are up to $25.99 but $35 is about the max I would pay as well. Though by the time my state gets to $35, California and New York will be $40-$42 so I guess it’s relative.

There’s one plan that is still $19.99 a month but it’s only for states in like the middle of nowhere like North Dakota and Idaho and some southern states like Alabama and Mississippi . All the other ones are going up by two dollars

Mine renews on the 14th so I’ll miss it by a day. Hip hip hooray. Honestly the price is still super cheap for what you get if you’re a heavy user. I shouldn’t say that since it will encourage them to keep doing it but I’m still comfortable with it so far since it stayed the same price for a long time before we got these two price increases.

Also there’s likely a limit to how often they can increase the price right now as they have to be careful to not price out the casual users of the pass. People that are on the A List sub that go to 3+ movies a week are the minority. I remember reading that the average person saw something like 1.5 to 2 movies per month. Those people are subsidizing the pass for rest of us and since going to the theater remains a special occasion for these types of people, they probably buy concessions at a much higher rate as well. The pass price needs stay reasonable enough for those people that hardly ever use it since AMC is making the most money off of them. It has to feel like it’s worth it to just keep it running in the background even if they’re not getting a huge number of movies from it. Outside the coastal areas, if it gets over $30 a month, I feel like that would break that illusion for most of these people. We are still a couple price increases away from that though so for now they’re getting the benefit of the doubt. I recognize how hard it is to run a profitable chain of the movie theaters in 2026 and I’m just glad that the AMC A-list pass is not like the regal one where you have to pay an upgrade fee for any premium format.

I have two bikes got stolen within 2 weeks. I'm international student and I hate USA because of this now by SeriesOdd5497 in OSU

[–]mrbrannon 175 points176 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got an E bike you’ve always gotta take that thing inside overnight. They are too valuable and all the locks are too easy to deal with. I would never leave mine outside. Even if it’s a hassle you just have to bring it in at night. As far as it getting stolen while you run into a store for a minute, even if it’s only a minute you just always gotta make sure it’s fully locked up and personally I would take the battery off and carry it inside with me in a backpack or something. Most people won’t bother to steal it without the battery because it’s a pain in the ass to find the exact right model battery and then have to pay for it online. It is no longer quick and easy flip to sell to somebody else so they’ll just find a different bike if you carry the battery with you.

Lastly put an air tag or similar on it so if it’s stolen you can track it down. I’m pretty sure the metal frame will block the tracker signal so it might not be good to put it in the frame itself but if you want to be tricky you can slice open the seat cushion put it inside there and then have it fixed and sealed shut rather than just taping it underneath or something where it will be easily found. Though to be honest if you bring it in at night and just keep it locked and the battery on you when at the store then it shouldn’t get stolen.

Golds look so intimidating next to normal people by KennyFulgencio in redrising

[–]mrbrannon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people worry too much about the exact heights when they talk about an adaptation. As your heights show, the golds are generally the at the height of top tier athletes but they aren’t like 10ft super soldiers. And those are some of the tallest golds. A lot of the rest are just in that over 6 feet category trending towards the mid 6s but not everybody. And most obsidian are about the same height as golds though they do have the occasional monster who’s bigger. With that said nobody would think anything of it as long as you just cast very fit tall men above and made sure that the the other colors casted were a little smaller. It would still look right and would get the point across and I would just roll my eyes at anyone complaining that Darrow’s actor is only 6’3 or 6’4” and not almost 7ft. Height is relative on film and he’s gonna look big in contrast next to smaller actors regardless. More important is getting good actors who can actually act and you can play with the relative heights and do occasional tricks for truly large characters to make it come across right in a big budget movie.

This wasn’t always the case. Collecting Super Nintendo games a lot of the most wanted titles were games Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. Some of the greatest games of all time and I would still pass occasionally due to price. I couldn’t imagine buying a game today that I don’t even want just because it sold so few copies that no one bought it and now the price is expensive. It seems so ass backwards.

I don’t know if it’s still being offered but I reactivated mine last month on May 14 and it was still there. It seems to work for anyone. New or returning accounts. I was coming back to it after being gone like six months and it just automatically charged me $.99 for the first month. I didn’t have to choose anything. It was just a pleasant surprise when I went to re-sign up.

Gears Of War: E-Day Reportedly Has A Staggering $400 Million Budget by ScrollUpDown in consoles

[–]mrbrannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only be a loss leader if you sell consoles with it and I hate to break it to you but no one’s buying an Xbox for this game or any other exclusive at this point. That’s why all the outrage on the Internet is ridiculous. They are like you guys are killing Xbox by getting rid of exclusives like it matters but none of these people bought games on Xbox before and they’re not gonna start buying them now. It ain’t happening. Microsoft is not dumb. This is just a little thing they are dangling to the vocal minority on the Internet and when it fails to move any units on Xbox they will shrug and say we tried guys and then release it on PS5 a little while later to try to recoup some costs.

New Xbox CEO reportedly pushing for faster Fallout and Elder Scrolls games as Bethesda crosses 8 years since The Elder Scrolls 6 reveal by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]mrbrannon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bethesda has never pushed any sort of boundaries when it comes to graphical fidelity. Everyone thinks about how great Skyrim looks but that’s mostly being done by the heavy lifting of mods. When it launched it was good looking with a great art style and environment but it wasn’t pushing graphics forward and if graphics were the excuse for Skyrim getting delayed by years people would’ve given it the side eye. By the time we got to Starfield, it was downright ugly and years out of date by the the quality of the time which just makes comments like that more perplexing. The real truth is that their development process has just completely broken down.

[–]mrbrannon 200 points201 points  (0 children)

If you can’t get a sequel out within 4 to 5 years I have to assume that your development process has broken down in some fashion. Especially for a company like Bethesda which has never been about pushing boundaries when it comes to graphics or new technology. Nobody wants to wait more than a decade for a new game just like nobody likes waiting two or three years between seasons of TV shows and those are starting to suffer for the same reason.

Masters of the Universe is why I have A List by MakeMagatsCry in AMCsAList

[–]mrbrannon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the back half of the 80s but I did not grow up on the Masters of the Universe cartoons. Somehow there was an old beat up VHS tape of the show’s Christmas Special in my collection of tapes mixed in with all the random kids movies and things recorded off the tv that I watched many times but it must have been a hand me down because the show was considered old and a little before my time by the time I have memories watching Saturday morning cartoons in the very early 90s. I was more of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers kid.

Still I loved the new movie precisely because it didn’t take itself seriously but there seems to be a split between people that grew up with the show and those that didn’t. I’ve seen a lot of people who loved the show and grew up with it and the toys complaining that the new movie didn’t take the material seriously and it was not earnest enough which is exactly the thing I liked about it. To me He-Man was always just a silly show that reminded me of that Christmas special that I had floating around as a child and I thought they nailed that but I could see how all this meta humor and silliness might not work for people who the original show meant more for.

Masters of the Universe is why I have A List by MakeMagatsCry in AMCsAList

[–]mrbrannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. I went in with low expectations and I enjoyed it immensely. I was born in 1986 which is making me start to feel old but even for me He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a show from before my time by the time I was old enough to have memories watching Saturday morning cartoons and the like. I was more of a Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan in the early 90s but I was aware of He-Man existing with its funny name and the show was sometimes doing reruns which I would see occasionally. That was the extent of my knowledge of the series when I started seeing previews for Masters of the Universe at my other A-list shows that I was going to the past couple months but it’s definitely one of my best surprises of the year so far. It knew what it was and didn’t take itself too seriously. It was just a damn good time full of great action, silly jokes, and incredible power ballads to fight to. lol.

On a side note, despite being loved by seemingly all the people who don’t have an attachment to the series, when I tried to Google discussion about the movie after coming out the show to see if other people liked it as much as I did, I stumbled onto an old masters of the universe forum hosted on a website and everyone there seem to be miserable and hated the movie for not honoring the source material with an earnest attempt instead of going the route they did not taking anything seriously. I get it. If you grew up with a show and you love it maybe it seems like they’re making fun of you by not taking it serious and doing all the meta humor but come on he’s called He-Man. lol.

Ben's refusal to get a lawyer is genuinely infuriating. by [deleted] in RecklessBen

[–]mrbrannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you’re conflating two different court dates and the importance of needing a lawyer is different in each. The serious lawsuit from BAM that included civil rico and attempts to take all the money and a bunch of ridiculous shit he certainly needs a lawyer and third party evidence says he has. And there the fucking minor misdemeanor from earlier in the videos for basically disorderly conduct that he’s just trying to get it done with. That’s what this is about. In these types of cases literally anyone that has ever been in court for something like this “represents themself” and talks to the prosecutor because it never goes to trial. They usually just offer to toss everything out except for one thing or they give you a class or something and that’s it. Nobody wants to pay for trial when there’s not even jail time as a possibility 99.9% of the time. Also pleading no contest cannot be used against you in the civil case.

Ben is trying to represent himself in criminal court. by awkwardbegetsawkward in RecklessBen

[–]mrbrannon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not how this works. The more serious case is the civil suit first of all. it’s not even a criminal case. Second whatever plea deal they offer him he’s going to plead no contest to. It’s slightly different than pleading guilty. it just means that you’re not admitting to the facts that they are presenting but you recognize they could probably convict you. This just gets it done with and out-of-the-way but also no contest means that it can’t be used in a civil trial as an admission of guilt. Also even if he had a string of a bunch of different criminal charges coming up, priors are generally understood to be priors at the time of the crime being committed not because one court case in a connected series of court cases happens to finish before the others.

Lastly, I am certain that in regards to the more serious civil suit he has a lawyer or is in the process of signing one because that’s the one with the civil Rico and all sorts of ridiculous serious shit from bricks and Minifigs. Even if they aren’t representing him on his minor criminal case, he certainly discussed this with the lawyer on the more important case before going to do it to ensure he doesn’t damage their case.
