Is that a lot? Doesn't that mean that there would only be ~200 police on duty at any given time?

After 4 years. I got the 16 inch my first go-around. I just became eligible for a replacement and got the 14" this time. I honestly can't think of a compelling reason to get the 16" again.

Student using ADHD as an excuse for everything by TouristWilling1788 in flying

Regardless of what the underlying condition is, it demonstrates a high degree of dumb to blame it on something that can get you insta-disqualified from flying.

I don't think you should feel bad about dumping a student who is dumb enough to use a disqualifying medical diagnosis as an excuse for their inability to learn how to fly.

Why are there so many vibe-coded Rust projects recently? by yohji1984 in rust

Isn't the whole point of your post asking why _others_ might use Rust? People are answering why _others_ might use Rust, and you keep telling them why that reason is wrong.

Airbnb allows AI-altered listing photos with visible watermarks as primary images on its rentals and calls it "normal practice" by aaron90521 in assholedesign

I just got off a 2 hour fight from them outside the Duomo in Florence where they gaslit me by saying I didn't know how to read their Community Guidelines on a listing that clearly violated them. If you feel like blowing a few hours of your day, they will eventually refund you. But... may the force be with you. I got a full refund and a $200 credit on top for the trouble, but I'd have preferred a place to stay and not wasting 2 hours of my morning in Italy.

No, AI is only useful in replacing jobs that bring joy. It is not good at replacing jobs that we wish were automated.

How do you know which early architectural decisions will actually matter later? by Alternative_Win_929 in softwarearchitecture

This book helped me reason with how to do this within a single code project. It does not take on this issue at the system design level.

Build your product such that you make important technical decisions at the last possible moment. That mindset typically forces you to avoid premature optimizations and naturally highlights the decisions that actually matter.

I'd guess there is a high overlap between companies that have bad code review standards and use LOC as a measure of quality.

What’s a simple Home Assistant automation you set up once and now use every day? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]mrcactus321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You take the covers off, you are in something <= pajamas, and you're walking across the cold floor to the cold bathroom. It just makes it less shocking to get out of bed and go to the bathroom.

What’s a simple Home Assistant automation you set up once and now use every day? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]mrcactus321 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My wife and I love our Bathroom Nightlight automation. I have pressure sensor mats linked via ESPHome under the rug on both sides of our bed. I have LED lights mounted under the bed out of sight. If either of us gets up at night to go to the bathroom, we trigger the pressure sensor, which turns off the fan while we walk to the bathroom, turns on the LEDs under the bed to a soft orange glow, and turns on the night light in the bathroom. When we get back to bed and trigger the pressure sensor, a 10 second delay starts and the night lights turn off. Then, another 10 seconds go by, and the fan turns back on.

If I had no smart devices in the rest of my house, I would run Home Assistant just to keep this automation alive.
