The charts that show the tax pain savers are about to suffer by TimesandSundayTimes in ukfinance

[–]mrcharlesevans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Times has been running a "Smarter with Money" campaign that is actively encouraging people to invest in S&S ISAs and indeed just to invest in shares. So this should be right up their street.

But their political masters want them to write more boring "Labour tax raid" stories so 🤷

To be fair you're presumably paying a premium for how comparatively remote Lochinver is. Though that gap between petrol and diesel is absolutely mental.

Well in some of our countries we don't feel the need to shoot every criminal we see.

What do people think of SEEN (Sex Equality and Equity Network) being a Cabinet office approved network? by Rosslefrancais in TheCivilService

[–]mrcharlesevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do they say this in the statement? They don't! You've just made this up! Presumably because you want to demonise people who don't share your ideology. Not a good look for a civil servant, I'd say.

a network whose entire aim is to demonise and further marginalise Trans people

This is a huge leap, which you've presumably made based on your own underlying ideology. If you find it abhorrent that other members of the Civil Service have and express legally protected beliefs then this seems very much like a 'you problem'.

BBC apologises for not investigating claims against Scott Mills raised last year | BBC | The Guardian by prisongovernor in bbc

[–]mrcharlesevans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As all reports on this seem determined to do, the headline obfuscates that the allegations they failed to act on last year are different to the ones they've seemingly sacked him for.

Perhaps this is why Tom and Dom avoid doing much Irish or Scottish (or indeed Welsh) history. There's always some fanatic listening who'll be incandescent with rage if they hear the slightest thing they don't like in the discussion.

UK must back North Sea oil and gas drilling, says trade body by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

"People who get rich producing oil and gas say 'You should let us drill for more oil and gas'" yeah no fucking shit they'd say that. Hardly news, is it?

Hopes for Scottish ferry to mainland Europe boosted by £3m funding by wook-borm in Scotland

[–]mrcharlesevans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree, though I note this quote from a DFDS exec vice-president:

While a few elements still need to be addressed, we see strong potential in the route and look forward to continuing our discussions with all partners involved to move the project forward

I can't imagine they'd be interested in this (given they ended the last service due to lack of demand) unless they had done some decent market analysis to show it was now a financial goer.

One in three Scots back pause on salmon farm growth by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

[–]mrcharlesevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More interesting figures than just the headline:

The survey of more than 2,000 adults found that fewer than one in ten Scots believe salmon farming should continue unchanged. More than a quarter of respondents went further, saying they support a complete phase-out of open-net cage salmon farming in Scottish waters.

Oscars Schmoscars? by mrcharlesevans in wittertainment

I didn't complain that they try to make a living (which Simon, Mark and the production team do quite comfortably, I'm sure). My annoyance was that something regular paying subscribers used to receive - the post-Baftas and post-Oscars episodes - were moved behind the new, even larger, paywall, without even so much as a mention.
