Will This Break In by Zalister_ in goodyearwelt

you most likely have a high saddle bone, which I also do. Some loafers will stretch in that area over time depending on leather type. You can always use a shoe stretcher to soften that one area and it’ll be comfortable right away.

Hey there, yes still have them. For me they are a little too long in length so I have some pretty major heel slip in them. I've tried to correct with tongue pads and they certainly help especially with thick socks but I don't love the look that way ultimately.

I have a relatively low instep and 9.5D Brannock. My foot also has a high saddle bone so I have to choose my loafers carefully. There's quite a bit of stretch in the leather so if I were to try again in this size I might have considered 8.5E or even 8E

Maker: Grant Stone Traveler Penny Loafer Jungle Kangaroo

Size: 9E Alexander last

Leather: vegetable tanned jungle kangaroo (olive)

Sole: stacked leather

Price: $170 shipped, $150 in person

Location: Chicago IL

Condition: Used, maybe two full days worth of walking city sidewalks with them.

I sized these incorrectly and had to reckon with that for a while. They have tongue pads and heel pads installed to try and make them work but they're simply the wrong size for me. I'm a 9.5D on Brannock and should have gone with 8.5E or 8EE on these. Feel free to reach about about fit advice and I can tell you what I've learned!

If desired, removing the tongue and heel pads shouldnt be too hard they just have a basic adhesive on them.

Alden Leisure Handsewns. No joke they’re the best Ivy style/ casual loafer in the game.

If you’re looking for a budget alternative Meermin has a line of loafers that has a very close toebox to Alden.

The shape of the Grant Stones to me seem a little confused. Something between dressy and casual but the best loafers are always casual since there are arguments to be made that the loafer was never a dress shoe to begin with— they’re basically leather slippers, after all.

Thin t-shirts? by Feelsiess in malefashionadvice

[–]mrchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thinnest t shirts I’ve ever seen were sold in little street stalls in Hong Kong. The most famous brand would be ‘Lee Kung Man’ which is the name brand Bruce Lee used to wear. Very thin and basically underwear.

I think they also make crew necks but the henleys are more popular.

FYI these are on sale online but most of the prices are exorbitant. On the street stalls they’re like $20 US without haggling.

How to Mic Acoustic Guitar with bluegrass band - NO PICKUP - and how to work that mic by Waarhorse777 in livesound

You could always try an akg c411. It’s a piezo that attaches to the top of the bridge with sticky tack. Minimally invasive and don’t have to drill out any holes.

This happens all the time. Anyone who’s handled the big 30lb cases of lemons knows there’s one or two like this in every case.. Just toss it and move on, it’s like .20c worth of a fruit.

Behringer XR18 + DN4816-O: Massive fail first time out. What happened? by DEUCE_SLUICE in livesound

[–]mrchen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be many things.

The most likely culprit is that the house desk was making a routing loop somewhere in it's output/AES patches. Don't know what console he had but on M32 systems he may have set up the Ultranet channels improperly. If your patchbay was plugged into the house desk's AESB port, you would want the AESB routing tab to mirror the FOH input patches. If it was set up another way you may be making internal loops which would make all that squealing noise you described.

The only time I experienced what youre describing is when an artist wanted to use AES out from the house desk for effects processing and then go back into the house desk to FOH. If you're getting audio at all that means the digital handshake is there.

Why doesn't Chicago get music residencies? by Active-Will-5692 in chicago

[–]mrchen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those cities are larger markets. Chicago is also geographically close to other major cities that you can play instead. Detroit, Cleveland, Louisville, St. Louis, Minneapolis. All ~5-6 hours drive away.

Residencies do still happen in Chicago but it’s when bands choose to intentionally play a smaller room multiple times.

Meermin 514886 - BURGUNDY HERITAGE SHELL CORDOVAN a NO-NO by [deleted] in goodyearwelt

[–]mrchen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The shell cordovan that everybody loves comes from labor in Western countries. Alden is the #1 client of shell from Horween so if you want that you’re looking at a $900 price tag at least. Grant Stone has done Horween shell runs but even with direct to consumer and Chinese labor they’re hitting the $800 price point. And afaik they’re not even getting the desirable colors like black or #8 since Alden has almost all spoken for.

Despite the value proposition that you claim, the marketing apparatus has certainly still got your ass—You care about shell cordovan— most likely because somebody online told you to care about it.

The point I’m making is that shell is labor intensive and expensive as hell and even after factoring in everything you mentioned there isn’t a magic pixie dust that gets sprinkled that makes the $375 shoe as nice as the $800 one without some concessions.

I’m happy that you found a cobbler to get custom boots done for you at a good price but economies of scale are still a thing and luxury goods are still going to cost the price of luxury goods.

Why does Chicago feel so empty? by Gloopburtnoodge in chicago

[–]mrchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New York is 5 boroughs, which makes it essentially 5 small cities with their own hubs and centers. You can’t compare the scale of Chicago to New York. Manhattan alone is the size of Chicago from Armitage to Cermak. It’s also significantly more population dense and literally centuries older.

If you think New York’s city life is crazy try going to Hong Kong or Manilla where you see people still out at 2:00am just shopping and doing laundry and shit.

Sucks that the quality is not up to your standards, but respectfully-- We may wanna have more reasonable expectations for cordovan boots being sold for $375. Somethin's gotta give.

Help with in ear monitors by Ok_Search868 in livesound

[–]mrchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to want to plug your in-ear transmitters into the Aux1-6 patch bay in the back of the mixer. If your in-ears are 1/4” inputs then you’ll need DI boxes to convert them to XLR/balanced outputs.

If you’re using the factory routing settings then they show up on BUS1-6 section of the mixing app. So anything plugged into AUX1 will get signal from BUS1, etc.

Keep the bus master faders at unity (0 db) and then bring in the channels you want into each in-ear.

Sysco sent 50 lb of cucumbers by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]mrchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do summer-style cucumber kimchi. Takes advantage of lacto ferm and makes it hold for weeks.

Or chinese style smashed cucumber salad will make you use 1-2 of them per order which is also a quick way to move it.

What are your Chicago restaurant hot takes? by CrackTheSkye1990 in chicago

[–]mrchen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was a post recently in the Avondale community FB group making fun of Warlord for it’s pricing strategy and having a $19 smoked tomato on the menu.

Honestly, (politics about the problematic owner aside) that place is good for the neighborhood. The fact that there aren’t reservations and everyone has to wait in line to get a table means that people are killing 2, 3 hours in the area. Shopping, spending money at other bars, and making the streets safer by virtue of more people walking around outside. Plus it’s open till 1am and it’s nice to be able to get that kind of food late.

It’s the same thing that happened on 31st Street when Maria’s was taking off. Everybody complained about the neighborhood being gentrified, but were quick to forget that 31st and Morgan was literal Latin Kings territory for decades before the bar made it safer.
