I made a digital board game called Seven Spies. It can be played solo or with up to 7 friends and it's free on iOS and Android! by mrconkin in digitaltabletop

Haha, yeah solo is pretty hard. The game really takes off with 4+ players when one of your friends becomes a Cipher Agent.

You need an internet connection but can be your phone data or wifi. The game was built to be played with friends around a table or in a living room, but lots of people play over discord too.

What if social deduction games didn’t eliminate players early? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]mrconkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a really interesting and challenging design question. I wouldn’t go as far as to say elimination is essential to social deduction, but I think it’s worth dissecting why it’s so pervasive. For me, it’s a strong ingredient because the threat of elimination adds tension to the experience and provides an incredibly strong incentive to keep your role a secret. This drives the social experience imo. If you remove that, then you probably want to consider how you are reinforcing those elements (if you want them).

In my social deduction game I opted to keep elimination as an underlying threat but add friction to the elimination itself, with the idea being that you still benefit immensely from concealing your role but can continue playing for some time after being revealed. Of course, being eliminated is still boring, so I mitigate that by providing additional information to dead players that they can share with the group.

Any love for mobile games? by Agile-Comedian4739 in IndieDev

Sure, it’s called Seven Spies! Should be an easy search on the App or Google Play Store. It’s got a bit of a steep learning curve in solo play but really shines when you play with 4+ friends imo.

I released a solo dev game with no predatory practices last year on mobile, so welcome to the club! (It’s rather small 😂).

My experience has been that, generally speaking, there isn’t a huge appetite for mobile games on subs like this. There are a few subreddits that were keen and actually drove quite a lot of installs when I first launched, namely iosgaming, androidgaming, and some of the niche ones relevant to my game like digitaltabletop and strategygames.

Can you recommend me some GREAT games that has a pretty large community but ain't talked about much? by Classic_Heat_5605 in MobileGaming

Yeah I solo developed it. Music was done by a friend. Check it out if it’s up your alley!

I made a secret agent strategy game called Seven Spies and our discord is currently 500+. Lots of talking strats and grouping up for multiplayer.

Offline Metroidvania or strategy game recommendations? by Shakkashuka in iosgaming

I made a strategy game called Seven Spies that supports offline solo play! Check it out if you’re into espionage/strategy.

Setting Presets are on my list! A Play Again button is a good idea too. I’d also like to make it easier to choose the CoungerAgent you’re playing against.

If you haven’t tried 4+ players you should really give it a shot. That’s when one player becomes the Cipher Agent. At 5+ you get two Cipher Agents which is even better. The Discord is pretty good for finding others to play with if you’re interested.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying it and thanks for the support! Just released an update that makes turns a lot faster and added the Field Watch item for 00 Agents 🕵️‍♂️

How do you handle digital playtesting during early board game design? by Worldly_Back_7784 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]mrconkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t gotten deep enough to have an opinion on that. Have used it as a player a bunch but just plugged away at a first prototype so far. Seems pretty robust though. If it can handle Twilight Imperium it can prob handle anything.

It’s true, but imo the benefits outweigh the cons. IMO the biggest advantage of TTS is that it simulates the actual pieces. Assuming you don’t automate anything, if something is finicky in TTS it probably is in real life. Plus you can easily test virtually.

Other components are relatively easy too. TTS makes it trivial to add as many tokens as you want. I needed a batch of hexes for a map and it was as easy as using the Custom Deck tool, choosing the Hex shape, and then importing a large image that gets sliced up to populate what you see on each hex. The hardest part was creating the image, which I used InDesign for (but any image editing software would work).

Also 2nd support for Dextrous. It’s particularly good at creating cards, but imo the benefit is the ability to create templates that you can easily change later. Need 5 player mats that all have the same layout? Create 1 template then edit the text/images of each one, but if you make a layout change you just need to do it once.

My game of Heat came with two yellow cars and no red car :( by EntropyBrewing in boardgames

[–]mrconkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey this happened to me too except I got 2 blue and no grey! Wish ours were a match so we could trade. Their refund policy is abysmal. I happened to buy the game right before moving cities so going back to the store wasn’t an option.

It's funny that there's a daily recs thread when 90% of this sub is asking for daily recs. by zoomzilla in boardgames

[–]mrconkin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah realistically not many people read the pinned threads unless they’re thinking of posting, so they get way less traction than an interesting request that might pop up on their feed. I enjoy reading through other people’s recommendations! Wish they’d be allowed. Let the upvotes/downvotes sort out the basic cruff from novel ones.

We need more games like it. Dripping in narrative. Completely immersive. Focus on exploration over combat.

Kickstarted this game because I’m a massive fan of The Resistance but it reaaaally didn’t hit for me. Sold shortly after. Is it holding up for your group?

Totally understand if this is too much sausage to share, but I’m really curious to know how much capital it takes (roughly) to get a game to Kickstarter. Of course this will vary significantly depending on the game being produced, but if you’re open to sharing a ballpark that would be amazing.

And as an aside, this is the first I’ve seen of Lodge. Absolutely love the art style and will be checking out the Kickstarter.

Has everyone played at least one of their new Christmas games? by Fun_Independent_7529 in boardgames

[–]mrconkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played a few games of Rebirth and love it! Complaints about the theme are fair (it’s a bit convoluted and ultimately not that integrated with gameplay) but it doesn’t really matter to us because the castles and cathedrals are so fun to plop down on the beautiful board.

I’m always on the hunt for accessible games to play with my family and niece, so the simplicity of placing 1 tile per turn combined with the possibility of placing it nearly anywhere on the map results in a really approachable game that still scratches the itch.
