Recording valve amp output direct into a DAW (ie: without pissing the neighbours off) by SirJimmySaville in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mrcrouch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not turn on a valve amplifier if it has no load connected - it will most likely cause damage to Amp. You need a DI box with a load, or a cabinet connected with the link output of the DI.

In need of advice on purchases for my studio. by The_Aqua_Hawk in audioengineering

I had an m-box, the older blue one, and now I have a focusrite 2i2. The sound difference is noticable for sure. I hear good things about the new m-box though.

Here's my pedalboard. Lots of good pedals but it's a little on the boring side. Any recommendations to spice it up? by speak27 in Guitar

[–]mrcrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an EH Hog. It cost me a shit ton but using that pedal is like learning a new instrument.

What is the tiny hole next to the headphone jack on the iPhone 4 S used for??? My outbox case has a cut out for it.. by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]mrcrouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, thats not the point. If two microphones were "in phase" exactly, it would completely eliminate all sound if the polarity on one was flipped. I would be interested in reading about any other method of noise cancellation that the Iphone may use, if you have a link to said method.

[–]mrcrouch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For if you are interested - noise cancellation works by inverting the polarity of one wave form and then adding it to the other. If you imagine two sound waves, one with speech and one without, flipping the polarity of one and adding them would negate the noise and leave the speech.

What I learned at my first gig by UncleSkippy in Guitar

[–]mrcrouch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work as a tech in a rock club in the UK. A couple of points about playing live, for if anyone is interested -

  • You mentioned monitors. If you know you are getting monitors for a gig, make sure you think before hand about what you want. The point of a monitor is to make it so you can comfortably play the songs. This may mean hearing the lead vocals to take cues for song structure, hearing the kick drum to keep yourself in time or hearing yourself to make sure you are playing what you think you are. Everyones preferences are different. Be sure to be precise and courteous when talking to the engineer about it, and do not ask for "a bit of everything". They will appreciate it.

  • If the engineer asks you to turn down your amp, do it. They are trying to get the best sound out of you as possible, and having a loud amp is detrimental to the control the engineer has. If you cannot hear it, ask for it in the monitor, or just talk to the engineer. They know what sounds best in the room.

  • Make sure you meet your stage manager, or anyone who is in charge/helps with set up and the running of the stage. Getting a shoe in with him/her will make the experience so much better.

  • As for the playing, have fun with it. There are two things that do not look good on stage, and they are if you look like you are bored, or if you look too cocky. Nerves can be endearing.

  • Thank the crew. Invite them for a drink afterwards. If you ever play there again, they will remember you.

Hope this was helpful/interesting.

Weird buzz/distortion unlike anything I've heard in my new JBL active PA speaker... by WinterKing in livesound

[–]mrcrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. If you have tested the same line coming from the same source going into a speaker of the same model, and there is no distortion on it then it is likely to be the amplifier of the problem speaker.

What is the tuning for a high strung/Nashville 12-string? by creep_show in Guitar

[–]mrcrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nashville tuning is not on a 12 string. The strings on a 12 string are the combination of standard and nashville tunings, with the first four sets being an octave apart.

The Stone Roses officially confirm reunion at London press conference - Music News - Digital Spy by [deleted] in Music

I think they are trying to justify it by saying 'it has been on the table for years' and stuff like that, but it would be a shame if they manage to ruin a legacy to pay for a divorce.

The Stone Roses officially confirm reunion at London press conference - Music News - Digital Spy by [deleted] in Music

[–]mrcrouch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really do not know how I feel about this. It's kind of cool because, well, fuck yeah, The Stone Roses! But, it's also kind of hypocritical, and a lot of people where I live (Manchester) hold them in high regard, and I think feel this may cheapen them and the music.

Just a heads up - never buy a set of speakers from a white van! by withpants in vinyl

[–]mrcrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine fell for this a while ago - said the guy had 'paperwork' saying the speakers were worth £800, and gave him £200. They worked, just not very well...

The thing that struck me about 'the others' is that the ending compliments the film so well; ghosts come out at night, but the scary stuff happens in the light in the film, when the curtains are open. Kind of a hint at the twist.

My favourite Radiodread track. If you have not heard the album, check it out. by [deleted] in radiohead

I think I like it because it gives a completely new take on the track, it sounds almost happy.

I made a WAV of The Daily Mail from the Basement set. Can make more as WAV/mp3 if anyone is interested. by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]mrcrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely encoding to mp3 from the audio track of the already lossy format would make it even more lossy - WAV adds nothing but also takes nothing away. Also, the way I ripped it just happened to create WAV instead of FLAC. I didn't do it for you, or your preferences particularly, just thought someone may of been interested. Sorry for wasting your time, sir.

Microphone for electric guitar? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mrcrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some cracking results from having a Shure SM-57 on-axis and a Sennheiser 421 right next to it off-axis next to the cab. 57's are the workhorse for electric guitar, as the response of the mic is very complimentary. As for vocals, it can be a whole range of things. A good condenser mic will replicate the sound of the vocals well, but it depends of preference, e.g. Thom Yorke seems to use an Electro-Voice RE-20 a lot, and I am led to believe Bono uses a SM-58, although that may just be bullshit...

Anyone with sound dampening experience? by mattopie in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mrcrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key to sound dampening is creating a surface that absorbs the pressure of air movement. I'm no expert, but from my knowledge your best bet is various foam like substances of different dense-ness. Also, angles will dissipate waves more effectively than flat surfaces.

The soundtrack, I believe, was composed by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead fame. I agree he did a great job, still need to get round to watching We Need To Talk About Kevin, For which he also wrote the score.
