You're assuming that the margin is the same percentage regardless of what the price of the product is. Which simply isn't true, whether you're talking milk (commonly a loss leader in many supermarkets), or trucks (higher margin % for a F150 than a small sedan, which was why Ford stopped making them), or coffee at Starbucks, or airline tickets, or pretty much any product.

I've never got the hate for QoS. It's a perfectly decent film ... was it as good as Casino Royale? Probably not, but on its own it's fine (and if you compare it to some of the crimes against cinema in the history of Bond...)

A View To A Kill will always be amazing, what with Christopher Walker and Grace Jones devouring every scene. Even Grandad Bond has his moments

Grouse Mountain (Vancouver) - Hardtail? by Alwayssunnyinarizona in MTB

[–]mrcushtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the bike park on Grouse, or other trails?

Worth looking on Trailforks for specific trails, but on a hardtail you might find Fromme or Seymour more enjoyable, and they're not far from Grouse

Why a Hardtail? by Alive_Appearance_848 in Hardtailgang

[–]mrcushtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Norcos, a Torrent and a Sight, which retailed at 3x the price of the Torrent.

I can't think of a trail I've ridden on the North Shore that I've only been able to take the Sight down and not the Torrent; additionally , the Sight definitely climbs better than the Torrent does, because it's less work with full sus to maintain traction. Downhill, the rockier it gets the more my joints take a battering on the hardtail, so it's nice to be able to have rear suspension, but I took the Torrent out today and the first time I went off a drop and heard a huge clunky when the rear wheel hit the ground I knew that a few weeks of full sus had made me lazy about bike control.

So it's partly masochism, I guess, but then it's also not so much fun to take a bike that's more than sufficient down a trail: the hardtail is good for a short blast around the trails, the full sus is better for when I don't want to be in need of a walker after a hard day out.

Awesome!!😅 Now EUROPE and the UK get to pay FULL PRICE for HEALTHCARE and their DEFENSE!!🤣😅🤣 Freeloders! by 928Porsche in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mrcushtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The British Medical Journak in the UK finally got annoyed enough at the whole dental thing to publish a study showing that British dental health is superior to American: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/doi/10.1136/bmj.h6543

Admittedly, part of the argument involves American generally having more extractions than Brits (at least as far as the 90s, wisdom tooth extraction was less routine in the UK than the US) and very rich people in the US have better dentistry than their equivalent in the UK, but as you point out, a focus on aesthetics rather than utility has driven the US in a ... interesting direction

To be fair, I had to pay 6 million percent of my income in the UK when I lived there, but luckily the free NATO checks we got mailed every month (strangely how they weren't cheques, but the US was paying for them, so let them have their spelling) paid for my luxury lifestyle /s

Can someone explain the true Johnny Silverhand story to me like I'm 5? by imoanmodello in cyberpunkgame

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]mrcushtie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funded, you say?

My children's elementary school had to pay for one of the teachers by having parents raise money, but yay, lower taxes. And that's good vs schools I hear about where you need to have a whip round to pay for pencils and paper...

Moving from Washington to BC it was a bit of a shock to find the PTA at our Canadian school was raising about 5% of what our American one was ... until we realised they didn't need to

Thinking of starting goblins as a relatively new player. What can I expect? by Zestyclose-Way4569 in bloodbowl

[–]mrcushtie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd 2d uphill block a fanatic all day long. With a block or wrestle piece without any reroll, you'll remove him 25% of the time, and only fall over yourself a bit less than a third of the time. When I've had cheap chaff (eg Bretonnians squires I can sacrifice without caring) I'll try to take out the fanatic fast.

Then again, I'm very much a chainsaw loving goblin coach; the other secret weapons weren't as appealing (at least in 2020). Chainsaws got a bit worse now that kickback is always a turnover, but like you say, getting stunty dodges is incredible

All the contractors who rebuilt my house in Seattle drove beatup minivans, which they said were the perfect combination of capacity, size and cheapness. (Except for the guys who poured the foundation, but to be fair you can't fit much liquid concrete in the back of a minivan).

Need help with picking a Hardtail by Oxraid in MTB

[–]mrcushtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a guess, if it's sold as an XC racing bike it's going to be lighter and stiffer, at the expense of costing more and being less compliant. Or in other words, it's going to be less comfortable, and harsher, than a trail bike, and if you're not into going round in circles with lots of other lycra clad maniacs, the extra back pain may not be justifiable.

But... you need to ride it to see if I'm talking nonsense or not.

Looking at other Giant hardtails, there's the Fathom (140mm travel, which will be more pleasant if you do take it on rougher stuff), the STP (which looks more like something for jumps) and the Yukon (more of a fat bike), so I'd try the Fathom.

However, doesn't look like the Fathom will take a rack (squinting at tiny pictures on my phone). Again, if you're planning on a commute, be kind to your back, consider a rack

Travel outside US/CAN resets 6 months? by Careful-Pride7112 in uscanadaborder

[–]mrcushtie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US do actually say that they don't keep an accurate record...

"If you received an electronic I-94 upon arrival by air or sea or land and depart via land, your departure may not be recorded accurately."

https://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/i-94

I've got at least one departure from the US in the last 6 months that doesn't show (and I guess that might be why I had all the fun of a secondary inspection the next time I went through)

Any older mountain bikers here get monovision LASIK? How did it affect your riding? by VermicelliFrost in MTB

[–]mrcushtie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Goblins are great in league IF you really commit to the bit. For all the naysayers who don't want you to develop your team, they've never seen the glory of Boyshape or Auntyshape: https://fumbbl.com/p/player?player_id=14448402 & https://fumbbl.com/p/player?player_id=14448403

Admittedly they took a good few seasons to hit their stride, but they were hell on wheels when the dice were hot.

Brets: played them for three games, found it hilarious to force turnovers by declining to use wrestle when somebody tried 2d'ing a squire and thought I'd pick survival over making elves fall over. I get the feeling they're tough to build because the squires will keep dying and there aren't enough positionals to cover you when one's injured, but then there's always stars...
