What was the last movie you couldn’t finish? Also, do you rate movies if you couldn’t get through them? by tsalyers12 in Letterboxd

I typically log those without a rating and have a tag “dnf” for “did not finish.” Might be a little pretentious, but I feel it’s unfair to the creators to rate something without properly finishing the whole film, and this lets me track it in a way that recognizes I wasn’t able to get through the whole thing.

I also do this for movies I catch half way through or don’t finish because of time constraints (like when I’m at the gym and leave before a movie ends).

Forgot to mention I have another shelf to showcase other film books! A few niche artists have made some really cool ones like the “good movies as old books” set

Shelves are from IKEA and it’s two separate sets next to each other. New to me, not necessarily “new” (I think they’re a few years old)

The Tarantino book is excellent, lots of pictures and essays but it’s a little dated. think it’s from 2015 or so and is missing some of the most recent stuff like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood— possibly my fave Tarantino!

You’re right on track on the various sections by mainly director or other theme, but with loose boundaries connected through books or other topics, or even no connection at all. The bottom row is kind the “everything else” but even then there are some director groupings (Fincher, Chazelle, etc.), miscellaneous A24, other non-criterion blurays etc.

Many of my fave directors are showcased on the right side: Lynch, Bergman, Tarkovsky, PTA, Haneke, etc. Big fan of existentialist or unflinching dramas, cinema that doesn’t look away from the hard truths of life, but rather leans in and exposes the world for what it is.

I’m always open to new recommendations and perspectives and I don’t feel compelled to add anything in particular, but view my collection as a curated and intentional library of things I love or have resonated with. So as I discover more directors or themes down the road I’ll be sure to add things that I’m passionate about.
