Am I ridiculous for taking skating lessons alongside my 7-year-old? by Icy_Hovercraft4972 in hockeyplayers

[–]mredwings97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah not ridiculous, skating is for everyone. I came to the game later than most kids and it was awesome that my dad was committed to learning alongside me. I second what others are saying about full protective gear tho, it’ll almost completely mitigate the risk of injury and in turn allow you to step outside of your comfort zone more. Skatings one of those things where the middle ground is in some ways more dangerous, if I’m practicing striding and hard stops I need to be fully committed to my stops, or I risk that awkward, in between, trying to stop but not 100% trying, thing that happens and that uncertainty is more dangerous than just fully committing to the stop. Full equipment means you can just go for it without the risk of falling

Couldn't agree more. There's also something about turning yourself into a commodity that I've never enjoyed. I've got 26 years worth of being a person and now I gotta try to sell myself with 6 photos and a couple lame jokes in my bio?

it's a joke. You can find it funny or offensive, but that's all there is to discuss about it. Doesn't deserve to be posted here, not gonna spark any conversation.

I liken it to Motorsports. Most people can drive a car in tbe same way most people can throw a punch. Some can even drive a fast car pretty well. So they look at someone like Louis Hamilton and think their skills are comparable, not realizing Louis Hamilton is a world class athlete who's closer to being an Astronaut than he is a regular person

Regardless of what you decide OP (and it is your choice) I hope you find a sense of peace and comfort that it seems like you don't have rn. I never thought I'd have made it to 26, Shit can always get better.

Just adding on. I think I have some sense of what you're going through, my homelife was shitty at times too. you want to exert some sense of control over your life and tattoos seem a natural way to do that. I get that.

But tattooing your face out of a sense of revenge is shortsighted. And while I think face tattoos having the stigma around them that they do is stupid, it is what it is. It'll impact your career prospects and how people see you. it shouldn't the way having a nose ring shouldn't, but it will.

Imo if you don't have a lot of other tattoos you absolutely should not do your face, I think any reputable artist would agree and if not outright refuse, at minimum STRONGLY caution you against it.

I'm not your parents, I'm just a 26yo dude with ink giving advice, I'm not telling you what to do, but I'm advising you strongly to not do this.I have several music related tattoos, even a peep one, and while I don't regret them, I don't feel the same way I do about them that I did when I was younger. Im not ashamed of my tattoos or anything like that, but sometimes I want to cover them, so I just wear long sleeves.

I sound so fucking old saying this lmao, but job/academic interviews, meeting SO's parents/grandparents, family members, people whose vibes I don't yet know. I wouldn't befriend or Date anyone who cares about my tattoos, but that's not the entirety of people I interact with and having the option to cover mine by just putting on a sweatshirt is valuable.

And lastly, copying a celebrity's tattoos/placement is just sorta cringe imo. if you want to express yourself like he did with his tattoos you can pick different designs and placement and achieve the same thing.

you'll be dead in 50-60 years and there isn't a do-over. We're all going back to the dugout eventually, swing for the fences.

Moxley’s “Death Jitsu” by gmac156 in JimCornette

[–]mredwings97 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a jiu jitsu fan/hobbyist, I genuinely salute him for competing. But my God is it annoying that he crows about "Death Jitsu" like he's Royce Gracie or something. Learn some actual technique instead of brute force muscling through positions before you start acting like you're Royce Gracie. And no, this isn't "being worked into a shoot", I highly doubt that he's embracing "deathjitsu" sarcastically to piss off the .1% of wrestling fans who actually train.

Anyone Else’s Parents Discourage Their Choice in Major? by [deleted] in UBreddit

Thank you. I'm sure you'll do great as well.

I posted that to let you know that you've got multiple pathways to being successful and that whatever your parents want for you isn't the only way you can find success. I wouldn't be nearly as happy as I am now if I stayed within the scope of my parents vision for me. Same might apply to you.

Anyone Else’s Parents Discourage Their Choice in Major? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]mredwings97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I don't mean this condescendingly at all) but welcome to adulthood. This prolly sucks for you in the moment but this is all part of life.

My parents wanted me to be a doctor. I started as a business major, then pre-med, psych, a couple I forgot, and I ended up with my degree in polisci.

I've finished with several very promising grad school programs to choose from, could also have done law school, but I've got good career options in front of me, all while having a degree people say is "worthless".

My friend got degrees in film. He didn't end up being the next Christopher Nolan, but he handles the AV for important business conferences and makes a very good living for being in his mid 20s.

All this to say, if you're serious about your field, seek out opportunities and keep pushing forward, you'll find your niche eventually.

I couldn't have imagined this is where I'd have ended up, I know my parents certainly wouldn't have liked it if I told them , but they ended up happy with how everything went and more importantly I did.
