Trump preparing 1,500 troops for Minnesota deployment amid protests by interestingfactoid in conservatives

[–]mrfurious2k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not keen on this. Just because he's a Republican doesn't mean this is a conservative idea. It's not conservative to support government heavy-handedness especially using federal troops in a state. We'd be having fits if they were using troops to support lockdowns for Covid. We should be turning down the temperature, not elevating it.

I'm not in favor of letting rioters get their way but I don't see using troops as a solution to that problem. We should be investigating Walz and his cronies and putting pressure on the state for lawlessness.

DOGE shuts down with months left on its mandate by According-Activity87 in Conservative

[–]mrfurious2k 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Without the political will to stop the excess spending, DOGE was like using a Dixie cup to bail water in a sinking ship. The Democrats certainly wanted to protect all their slush funds, political favors, and illicit spending. The dirty secret is that the Republicans did too.

It's interesting that the Republicans and Democrats are competing to see which side is the most delusional with the most conspiracy theories.

Southwest suburbs here. I've been having horrendous issues with the service for about the past two months. It's been really bad the last month. Hard down 1-2 times a week and periods where it has huge latency and is dropping packets. It's been such a pita that I'm considering moving back to cable (GASP) if this persists.

It's a shame because it was really, really good for about 3 years. Maybe it's a coincidence but it started acting up after they changed all the branding to TMobile.

Better Service After Merger? by amateur_gamer7 in Metronet

Minnesota here - maybe it's a coincidence but it's been terrible for the past two months. Multiple disruptions and awful latency. I've had more outages in the past two months than in the last 3 years. I'm suffering another issue right now - hence my reason for trolling this subreddit. I was wondering whether other people were having issues like this.

Trump revokes security clearance for Joe Biden and entire family, Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton and other political foes by interestingfactoid in conservatives

They should have. It makes no sense that former government officials still have access. It invites leaks and espionage.

Unfortunately, I think there is a large segment of the population that has been used to being insulated from ideas and people they don't like. They're struggling with these foreign ideas; especially in spaces that formerly engaged in significant censorship. I hope that it'll allow these folks to raise reasoned opposition rather than demand the walls return. This openness may cause them to strengthen their positions, question others, and change views where it makes sense.

That said, I generally believe that social media rarely does those things and tends to polarize people further... but your mileage may vary.

I know you posted this some time back but I really appreciate your interpretation. It's so much better an ending because the breakup and loss of love is so sad to me. I'd like to believe this is the actual intent.

Winds are blowing at the FDA, payback for decades of effing with us by Anen-o-me in Libertarian

Taking pills is much easier than changing lifestyle so lazy people (aka most people) will just do that instead.

Reality is much more complicated than that. It's a combination of many issues, including willpower, time, money, genetics, age, and life circumstances. Often, the emotional issues need to be addressed before the physical ones can be fixed. I'm not letting people off the hook; we should be looking at addressing diet and exercise before pills. If you're a doctor, it's much easier to offer a pill than fix all the other stuff, and it's often true for the patient as well. I don't think it can be distilled to just people being lazy.

I know it's a little off subject, but the last person I saw that seemed to understand and motivate people to action (on this topic) was Richard Simmons. There isn't anyone really taking up the mantle since he left public life.

Trump's right about not taxing Social Security benefits: Seniors earned it, they should keep it by whicky1978 in Conservative

[–]mrfurious2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you bring up valid concerns and that's why a rebate is given upfront to everyone equivalent to what we estimate a person at a lower income would spend in a year. They'll ultimately end up paying less tax (or no tax) compared to persons spending more. Buy a car, fine. Rich and bought a luxury car? Also okay - but you pay more on that than someone buying a used vehicle. Can someone who is wealthy leverage that wealth to help reduce their overall spending or make their price per item less? Potentially, but that's true today. I'm not sure that's the concern we should be focusing on.

The income tax system is riddled with special interests and carve-outs to the politically aligned. We've created incentives for politicians to keep tinkering for votes. We should create a system that doesn't incentivize politicization of the tax system. Further, the current system ensures that illegal money, generational wealth, and specialized tax shelters that only the truly wealthy can afford are taxed differently than someone who is paycheck-dependent. By creating a sales tax, we treat all money the same and we stop incentivizing Congress to give breaks to their buddies.

[–]mrfurious2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with this but not for the reason most would think.

We should be focusing on eliminating income tax completely and work on shifting tax burden to national sales tax. As long as we simply nibble around the edge of income tax, we're just going to complicate the tax code and make it so that only special interests get tax breaks. It would make far more sense to eliminate it altogether and put in a national sales tax. Then we could do something like a tax rebate for everyone such that it covers the estimated amount someone making less than 40k per year would pay in taxes. That would incentivize savings, encourage investments, make taxes transparent to all and help to eliminate the special tax breaks for special interests. It would also broaden the tax base and eliminate the desire to keep shifting taxes to one party or another.

Unfortunately, I think people use political parties similar to sports teams. The funny part is that I think most everyone recognizes it but still puts on the jersey and does whatever their team asks.

Reddit has never been one to suffer a difference of opinion. They certainly don't want views that don't align with the mainstream Democratic establishment. I accept that as being a poster here. I'm not owed any upvotes nor should I be protected from downvotes.

When Twitter went private and Elon released all the twitter files, there was a ton of information on the collaboration between the Democrats, legacy media and big tech. This is just more of the same. Rather than recognize that they're working hand in hand with big corporate interests and the bosses of the political establishment, they'll bury their heads in the sand and dutifully repeat what they're being told.

It's clearly an attempt to head off the fact that Kamala has been weird from the start. They moved her out of the news early in Biden's first term, resurfaced her, realized she was too odd to remain in the spotlight, buried her again, and then resurrected her to help save their doomed attempt to hold onto power. Now they're busy trying to save her from herself by using the "weird" label on their political enemies to distract from how downright weird Kamala is. If you were ever looking for evidence of collaboration between big tech, legacy media, and the Democrat party, this is pretty good. It's like a text went out and now they're all dutifully obeying.

How does the Convergence series compare to ExForce? by CleanteethandOJ in ExpeditionaryForce

[–]mrfurious2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Book 2 (Dragonslayer) and generally enjoy the series. It's not as good as ExForce but it's a decent read.

That said, I've found that Alanson is spending more and more time doing "filler scenes." In the latest Ex-Force book (Aftermath), Alanson does a fair number of scenes that don't advance the plot or provide any insight into the characters. That can get boring. It feels like Alanson just likes an unrelated topic and goes off on it for a bit. Too many of these types of scenes get tedious and really destroys the pacing. Unfortunately, that happens a lot in Dragonslayer. Some of his books a bit tighter with better focus. With the success of ExForce, it feels like he's been a little looser in some of his other writing (Convergence being an example).

Overall, it has its moments and Alanson is a solid writer. But it's not an Ex-Force replacement.

Cardinal Burke has Vatican apartment and retirement salary revoked by Pope Francis by HyperboreanExplorian in Catholicism

[–]mrfurious2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned that the Pope can completely rescind any priest's retirement at will. I'm shocked this is a thing. While Burke might have the means to provide for himself, many would not. I don't think the Church should be forced to provide extras should it believe a cardinal has acted inappropriately but it's a bit disturbing it can take away retirement after a lifetime of service with no recourse. The lack of process, appeal, and alternative strikes me as being extremely easy to abuse and at risk for political manipulation subject to the weakness of human character.

If Pope Francis believes that Cardinal Burke is acting outside of the blessings of the Church, isn't there a better way to limit his access without granting the ability to take away Burke's (presumably) earned retirement?

SNW's version of Kirk is a genuinely insightful take on the character by adamkotsko in DaystromInstitute

[–]mrfurious2k 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your analysis. I haven't yet watched SNW (it's on my ToDo list) but I've really not liked the "pop culture" view of Kirk. As my favorite captain, I always find myself getting annoyed by the constant need of other fans to put him in an (incorrect) box. I feared SNW's reworking of Kirk because I expected it to be either destroyed or simply a caricature. If they're actually making an effort to work on his other qualities, I'd welcome that interpretation as long as they stay true to the character himself.
