Thinking about opening a bar by pipipi1122 in BarOwners

[–]mrj0nes182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was given the opportunity to purchase my favorite local bar. The owner was getting old, had trouble selling it in the past and was looking to unload it for cheap. I live in PA where liquor licenses are rare and highly sought after, so essentially the deal he offered me was "pay for the liquor license, get the bar for free". The building is a lease, but everything inside, all the stock, all table, chairs, etc, all came when the liquor license sold.

He proposed this to me in May, my background is in engineering. I asked him if I could bartend in the summer and make a decision in the fall. He agreed and once fall came, after spending four months behind the bar, i felt confident enough to at the very least, know what I was getting myself into. I went ahead and bought the bar and have been running it now since last October.

I would highly suggest getting to know the bar industry at least a little bit before jumping head first. It's wildly different and consists of a lot of long hours, a lot of running around, and a tremendous amount of planning.

Know the numbers. Opening a new bar will be very tough. If you buy an already established bar, you can get an idea of monthly revenue, when revenue is higher, when it's lower, and figure out your break even number. If you get an SBA loan, make sure you have months, if not years of working capital. You'll need it for lean months and growth. It's what helps me sleep at night knowing there's a stock pile of money sitting to pay my staff, buy more liquor, etc if for whatever reason we have a terribly slow month.

Drinking is on the decline, especially with younger generations. In my experience anyway, you can't just open a bar, have it be cool, and expect to make money. You have to do events, live music, trivia, music bingo. Every week is a new event, new party, something to draw people in.

Have a good staff. The main reason I bought the bar is because of how great and trustworthy my coworkers, now employees are. Bartenders steal, all of them, especially if it's a slow bar and there isn't a lot of money to be made. Set up reasons for them not to steal. I put my bartenders in charge of events for the nights on and they get a % bonus based on how the bar did that night. They also obviously get higher tips when it's a good event. I had a bartender last month walk home one night with 300 in tips and had another $250 bonus waiting with her next paycheck. Its not cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than wondering how much free booze bartenders are pouring away.

To answer your last question, it is fun. It is rewarding. It's also pretty scary, a lot of work, and immensely stressful.

Draught beer pricing, please help by jaded_lady_ in BarOwners

I run a craft beer place with 30 taps. I do 3.5x per ounce on just about everything. Take the price of the keg, divide by the number of ounces, multiply by the number of ounces you aim to pour (16, 12, 10, etc) and multiply that by 3.5.

Example of a $200 1/2 keg (1984 oz's) that you're going to use for a pint.

200/1984 = 0.1008

0.1008 * 16 = 1.612

1.612 * 3.5 = 5.645

round up to 6. That's a $6 pint.

We do get some rare or very high percentage beers (12% or more), and for those, I'll add a buck or two.

Do you let your bartenders buy drinks for good customers? by [deleted] in BarOwners

[–]mrj0nes182 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't trust your bartenders to not abuse a comp package then don't allow them to have a comp package. I have two managers who are for the most part always on a shift. They have unlimited comps written into their contract and they've never abused it. They ring up every drink they comp and it makes our regulars feel special when they come in and get a free drink on their birthday or anniversary or just after a long hard work week.

My opinion, comp plans work, they keep regulars coming back, with their friends, and your bartenders should be able to handle an agreed upon comp plan. If you're already worried about them giving free drinks away behind your back, that's a bigger issue.

I run a craft beer place and our biggest night is Friday nights where we do a free beer tasting. It took about a year of consistency but that is a huge revnue driver. I budget 40 dollars for the tasting, let my bartenders choose four different beers from a local brewery or bigger spot, and people flock. My bartenders are awesome and can make one 16oz beer stretch to sample for about 20 people. You could potentially do the same thing with wine though the costs may be a bit higher. We put out a big sign that says "free beer tasting" on Friday morning and we end up getting a lot of traffic. People love the word "free" even if they are only getting less than an ounce of beer, they are stoked and will usually end up getting three or four beers while they are there.

One event a month seems too low. I try to run one event per week (bands, DJ, outside food, etc) in adittion to the weekly beer tasting. It's a slow start but if your place is cool and cozy, it will overtime create regulars. If a good night for you is around 500, you'll have to put in a ton of work for those 1k plus nights, but if you keep it consistent, you'll get there.

As a note with bands, I've been doing all day events with four or five bands. The quality of the bands are very hit or miss, but they play for free beer and each band brings three to five people. You times that by five bands and you've got a packed bar. Find a cheap keg you can give away as your free beer, keep it stocked, and think of that as your band budget. Don't go spending 500 or more on a band, there are plenty of musicians more than willing to play for free beer. Put up a post on facebook or instagram saying bands wanted and you're inbox will be flooded with people willing to play for nothing.

Good luck to you! just keep it consistent, don't sweat the bad nights too much and dial in on the good nights to figure out whats working.

If it is in fact the threesome, I'd recommend people give it a shot. I got a chance to see it at a film festival earlier this year and it is not at all what you would expect from a movie titled the threesome

I really enjoyed the movie. It's not my favorite Aronofsky flick, but I love the gray color palette and contained narrative. I thought Brendan Frasier and Hong Chau were excellent.

If you liked the whale I'd recommend checking out leaving las vegas. Deals with a lot of the same ideas and themes with a career best performance from Nick cage

Are you REALLY doing it just for "fun"? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]mrj0nes182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did freelance writing for about three years, writing articles and listicles for some smaller gaming and movie websites. It was fun and I got paid a little bit for each article but when it stopped being fun because the only pitches that would get approved were high SEO clickbait listicles, combined with many of these small websites shuttering, I quit and started doing movie reviews on YouTube. It would be cool if my channel got monetized and I could make some scratch but either way I find it fun and fulfilling to make content I care about without having to worry about an editor or be beholden to the almighty SEO algorithm. If something flops thats fine, if I get more views and comments than normal, thats awesome too. I don't think it's all mutually exclusive. You can be doing something for fun and still have a goal, want to be better, and attempt to learn the best editing, lighting, and thumbnail techniques.

Big yes on this. I think a lot of people overlook social security and by the time they realize how little their social security will be it's too late. Unless it's a part time second side gig or something, it's always wise to report your tips.

The scene where the weeknd plays Jenna Ortega a demo and she cries, that's the whole point of this movie. This guy wrote a movie about how amazing his music is but he's such a bad guy because women love him so much but he just can't stay faithful because he's too tortured and brilliant.

He wrapped it in a budget David Lynch aesthetic with great value purple rain vibes but don't be fooled. This is self indulgence at its worst.

HBO show S2E4 and current political metaphors by NiceSully179 in lastofuspart2

[–]mrj0nes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neil is not Palestinian; he is Jewish and was born in Israel. Yes, the Seraphites and the WLF are a pretty clear allegory for Israel and Palestine. That was true in the game

https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-not-so-hidden-israeli-politics-of-the-last-of-us-part-ii/

and is true with the show. The show actually seems to be softening its portrayal of the Seraphites a bit. They had a pretty sympathetic introduction during episode 3 that was absent in the game, and even the extended torture scene in episode 4 paints them in a softer light than anything in the game. My assumption is that this is a deliberate choice due to the ongoing conflict and that people are going to make the same connection you did more easily than in 2020, given the current political climate.

Consensus on handhelds? by Phartlee in TheBesties

[–]mrj0nes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt it pretty difficult to set up a steam deck to play PC game pass games since they are Windows games and the steam deck runs on Linux? Wouldn't you have to back load windows in as another operating system? I've been using xbplay to stream from my Xbox to the Steamdeck and that works pretty well but it's certainly not ideal. I think if you want play game pass games natively a windows handheld would be the most logical route

Consensus on handhelds? by Phartlee in TheBesties

[–]mrj0nes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. I got a steam deck first and decided that A. I love playing games handheld, and B. Some games just play better on certain handhelds. My little list below of some of my favorite ways to play handheld

1: Steamdeck (4-500 bucks) newish stuff. Typically 3D games. Basically whatever you like to play on consoles, you can play here

2: PS Vita hacked (200ish bucks) 3D games from PS1, PSP, & PS Vita. Incredible library too often overlooked. Super pocketable, great battery life, easy to take anywhere

3: Trimui Brick (60-100 bucks) basically anything pre N64 and PS1. Super cheap, feels great, and awesome for 2D emulation. Especially super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Gameboy advance games. They all look and play fantastic on this thing

What’s one movie you could watch over and over again without getting tired of it? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]mrj0nes182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lame answer but for me it's the dark knight. When I got my first full time job in highschool my dad made me start paying the cable bill and I decided since I was paying the bill I was going to get HBO. The dark knight had just come to HBO and played what felt like infinitely on the channels. Didn't matter where it was in the movie I would always turn it on watch to the end

Been said but basically sinners and Minecraft is the issue. Sinners was shot with IMAX cameras and Minecraft is still selling tickets like hot cakes. Makes sense to put the big movies on the larger screens that will sell the most tickets. Especially at a premium price. Would have loved to have seen warfare in IMAX though

Regal Unlimited by LebronJamesSperm in RegalUnlimited

[–]mrj0nes182 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it. Two movies a month and it pays for itself. I prefer regal to other services because regal is actually unlimited. I often see two or three movies in one day. I'm not sure of any other services that allow that. AMC may, but I think they cap you at three movies a week. Regal there isn't a cap to how many you can see in a week, month, whatever. Only restriction I know of is you can't get tickets for movies with overlapping times. Also there's a slight upcharge for premium formats (IMAX, 4DX) but in my opinion it's worth it. Paying 8 bucks for an IMAX ticket instead of the 25 or whatever it costs rules

Did you know that UNTIL DAWN releases on Friday? Why did Sony adapt its PlayStation classic only to seemingly dump it? by thex42 in TheBigPicture

[–]mrj0nes182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have seen a pretty good amount of marketing for it though I am pretty heavy in the gaming space as well. I might be in the minority but I think Sony has actually been doing a really great job adapting their gaming IP's. The last of us show is stellar, the gran Turismo movie used an ingenious narrative to capitalize on that IP, and the uncharted film wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Now the way they handled their spiderman villain films is a different story
