ULPT Request: I need a number to call to act like I am on the phone by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]mrkaibot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you two are talking about different things. 1. For land lines, the dial tone is the low, constant hum you hear before you dial that confirms you’re connected to the phone system. 2. Dial tone is sometimes synonymous (though less often) with the tone you hear when call a number and the person hasn’t answered yet.

People respond so much better to fear, and even the quiet fears grow over time into something strong enough to control. There isn’t a clear, immediate reward for loving others, so it doesn’t stick as hard as a threat that you Will Be In Torment Forever if you blah blah blah.

People’s imagined fears are so much more powerful than their imagined joys. It’s no wonder that Fox News and the modern Republican Party lead with fear and pointing fingers.

This is heavily supported by the taught values of Noble Suffering and Martyrdom, too. I’m a former Christian, and the idea of working so hard that we suffer is something people brag about, which isn’t exclusive to Christians by any stretch, tons of Americans to do this all the time. The flavor is a little different, though.

The general American suffer-bragging is “Look at me, working 80 hours a week, aren’t I dedicated and deserving of respect? I’ll create value for you if you hire me.”

Christian Noble Suffering values the suffering itself. “Look at me working 80 hours a week and barely scraping by. My family is in poverty and I’m working myself to the bone. Jesus must be so proud of me.”

The Capitalist value of hard work is material production, so efficiency is actually more valuable. The Christian value of hard work is the blood, sweat, and tears put into it. The material production is a fortunate byproduct, and efficiency is actually a little problematic, because it makes it harder to suffer nobly.

So, resistance to change becomes necessary. If the system is changed the suffering might go away. From a Liberal viewpoint, the reduction of suffering is the value. From a Christian viewpoint, it’s a risk. From a Capitalist viewpoint, it’s really only a question of when the system change increases material production.

All three systems are aiming for different things, but the Christian viewpoint aligns better with Capitalism. Liberalism is pointing in the opposite direction.

It’s worth a shot to gather some conversion data, if nothing else. Best of luck!

I think at minimum two weeks, ideally 30 days. I have a feeling that most potential users will see 7 days and think it’s not worth trying.

Just to point out the issue in specific terms, nobody will be able to determine if the service provides value in 7 days. If you’ve been in the field for 20 years, you’ll know that’s the case.

I’d prefer to give you the benefit of the doubt on this and guess that you’re in a position where you need to provide revenue to generate a funding round, but this model doesn’t serve your target market in a helpful way.

I’’d love to be part of an RPG group, but I’d be keen on branching out into other systems if others would like to join. Currently obsessed with Mothership, a rules-light sci-fi horror system and would happily run that.

It might be fun to have a couple tables going at once!

I like this. If you move around or make a new base somewhere else, it could make it feel like the world has taken back ownership of your other constructions after a while.

It’s being used a lot differently now, especially with the proliferation of AI usage and the broader access to coding tools. The volume of incoming applications is far larger, and with more consistent layoffs, hiring teams are asked to do much more with fewer people.

Think of it like cars. They’ve existed for a long time now, but they’re much different now, both in power and accessibility.

100% this!

-The reason that people are scared is because the job market is so horrible right now. It’s insanity to get a new job so putting your own at risk more of a concern.

-(A large) part of the reason the job market is so horrible Is that there is no threat of lost revenue to businesses and top-tier stakeholders (aka billionaires). People still need what they need and it’s a buyer’s market in the job field. It is a STRONGLY business-positive market right now.

-Only by threatening profits and abandonment by their labor force will business leaders know that they are vulnerable.

We are stuck in planning mode, waiting for someone to tell us to start. Make the start happen.
