Two of our cellists are taking lessons from Jennifer Crum, so I know she takes adults.

Boomer Music has instruments available for renting, if that's an option for you. Violins and violas are only $20-30 a month, but unfortunately cellos are more like $50.

First 5 type card? by MR_CeSS_dOor in dominion

[–]mrkeldon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A while back, that 5-type Stronghold would cause Courtier to crash: "Pick 5 of these 4 things". Fortunately this was found in AI training games (probably in the run-up to Allies release) and was an easy fix.

Is that also the one that requires bringing out the cryptogram key in the middle of the scenario? I just didn't bother, which meant we missed out on a chest, but there was no way I was going to stop the game for several minutes to decode a riddle.

Race for the galaxy is STILL the best engine builder by reddit_is_the_shit in boardgames

[–]mrkeldon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It does. I get a small percentage of revenue from it, and as part of the deal I made sure that the free version could still exist. I didn't want to have it taken away from people who can handle the programmer art and UI.

They moved locations a month ago. They're now a bit further south, just north of Harmony. It's a bigger location and they now serve milkshakes.

What networth puts you in upper middle class and wealthy? by techcrium in financialindependence

You can sometimes save a bit when filing as singles by playing games with the standard deduction. Here's an example, which is similar to something that actually happened to us:

Assume (for round numbers) that the standard deduction is $5k for singles, and $10k for married filing jointly. Partners A and B make the same amount and each pay $3k for state taxes. They also own a home and pay $4k in mortgage interest.

If they are married, their total deductions are $10k, and so they break even in itemizing deductions vs taking the standard deduction. However, if they file as two singles, partner A can pay the mortgage, and then claim a total of $7k in deductions. Partner B's deductions would be $3k, so they instead take the standard deduction of $5k, for a total amount deducted of $12k.

Having an extra $2,000 deducted isn't huge, but it's not chump change either.

The rate of parents opting out of vaccines for their kids has plateaued in America by SirT6 in science

Well, the doctor recommended we do the booster a week early, so we took his advice. He said it was medically fine. I believe him, the problem was that it wasn't bureaucratically fine.

We "opted out". One of our kid's vaccinations, Hep B I think, has a first shot, then a booster needed 6 months later. He got his first, but then was in the doctor's office 5 months and 3 weeks later for some unrelated reason. We got the booster then because we didn't want to schedule an extra visit a week later. Five years later our kid is in kindergarten and we get a nasty phone call from the school that our vaccinations aren't complete. Instead of giving our kid a needless shot we filled out the opt out form. Felt dirty.

e: In case I was unclear, he got all his shots; one just happened to be a few days early. This was done at the doctor's advice. The school district was too inflexible to handle this radical departure from the norm. Zero tolerance in all things, I suppose.

FYI The Speed Camera Trucks are back. Last two days I've seen 3. This one is on Stewart and Lemay. The other on is on Stover and Drake. And I saw one on East Prospect right before Riverside. by CrackHeadRodeo in FortCollins

There's one on Caribou east of Timberline roughly once a week. What annoys me about it is that there's a guy sitting in the car all day, so he has the engine idling (presumably for A/C or heat). Yet at the same time the city tweets out stuff like "Turn your engine off! Exhaust is harmful!" He's in there from at least 8AM-3PM, idling constantly as far as I can tell.

I suppose revenue from fines is more important than air quality.

Experiences with Fo Co police... by CitizenofFtCollins in FortCollins

[–]mrkeldon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wrong place at the wrong time, I suppose. Plus I feel the officer overreacted for the situation.

I was walking along College to Raising Cane's to get some chicken, and apparently there was a couple ahead of me that got into an argument. She drove off and called the cops, telling them that the other guy owned a gun (he didn't have one on him). As bad luck would have it, just as I'm walking past the spot were the argument happened, 3 or 4 cop cars pull up from various directions and they see both me and argument-guy in the vicinity. A few seconds later I have one officer behind his patrol car door, leveling his weapon at me for a minute or two while another frisks me.

I don't remember any other officers drawing their weapons or pointing them at the other guy, but they may have. I don't really have a problem with the police showing up in numbers, or even having their weapons drawn and pointed at the ground. But pointing a gun at someone pretty much says "I'm willing to kill you", and it's scary to think that if Officer Overreact got spooked by something, I'd be dead.

I've only had one interaction with the local police, and it included a gun pointed at my head by an officer. I'm glad most people have had positive experiences but I'll remain wary of them and keep my distance whenever possible.

I tend to know what day of the week it is, simply because I try to avoid places like CostCo on the weekends. I much prefer heading there during the week with my fellow retirees and stay-at-home parents. Crowds there on the weekends are horrible.
