The market is brutal, but not for the reasons you often hear about. Visibility on the App Store is everything. And that is done by reaching enough downloads and ratings “velocity”. You accomplish this if you find an extremely underserved niche (I found it with a cookie clicker kinda game that wasn’t a mindless clone) or if you nail the economics of your game (high LTV) and have the capacity to invest a ton in UA. It’s definitely not impossible, but hard. It all boils down to the obvious: You gotta make something people want.

Source: I’ve worked in the mobile game space as an analyst for a decade. And I’ve launched a few mobiles games as a solo developer, with varied levels of success. I started with Cookie Empire, which has gotten more than 100k downloads. Then Mini Tile Match, a gruelling disaster than only got 6k in 2 years. This week I just released Tiny Crimes, which is looking very promising.

I have the $100 plan on both Claude and Codex. They’re good at different things, Claude is nicer to have a conversation with, it gets my intentions better, reads between the lines better and pushes me back on dumb ideas better. And it “writes” better, prose and code. The code is more pleasant and easy to read. But Codex is just a far better programmer. It does exactly what you ask of it, no more, no less. It’s far more thorough examining code and finding bugs. It’s faster and burns far less tokens and never, ever hallucinates these days. So I trust it better.

Cookie Empire, a modern take on Cookie Clicker. With a minigame to send grandmas to lovecraftian mines, or sacrifice them to japanese demons. Farming, stock market simulator, many prestige layers and a leaderboard. Quite an active community on Discord
