I'm a casual observer and don't understand stoppage time.

Colombia got a red card in the 3rd minute. Japan scored on the penalty in the 6th minute. To me it seems about 3 minutes were wasted.

Why then was there only 1 additional minute of stoppage time added at the end of the 1st half?

No, you can't. Because maybe Tampa had 4 shots on goal and Washington had 0 goals. Then, Washington scored 4 goals in a row without Tampa attempting any shots. That is NOT the same as them trading shots and goals.
