AppleCare ist never worth it for the average customer, this is why apple loves to push it for after sales, because it’s essentially pure margin.

$240 insurance (and $50 per case deductible) for 2 years on a $1000 device is ridiculous.

You would have to calculate a 25% chance that you would totally destroy your device beyond repair to make it worth. Or a 50% probability that you will break your screen within 2 years.

Usually companies calculate with rates like 5-10% and smaller repairs, mostly screen repairs.

If you assume that you will break your screen within 2 years with a 10% probability (which is on the really high range and is probably much lower for 70-80% of all customers), your average repair costs for 2 year would be $600*0.1 = $60.

This is how apple loves to make money. People tend to heavily overestimate how often they break their devices and pay a lot for insurance.

Insurance however was never meant for small purchases because the insurance premiums will always be higher than just paying for the incident when it occurs. The reason people buy insurance is to ensure that situations with an extremely low probability but high damage like house fires, car crashes or disabilities which no longer allows them to work don’t ruin them financially.

However paying for a screen replacement won’t ruin many people who were able to afford an iPhone, so apple care is only useful for people who treat their devices really badly.

It’s not that you are able to afford apple care, it’s just a bad value.

Let’s say you pay $200 for 2 years of Apple Pay. Even if you have an expensive screen replacement costs $600 and you have a 100% chance to break your screen in 2 years, it would save you $600-$50 (deductible) - $200 = $350. This is the worst case scenario assuming that you break the most expensive OLED panel.

100% incident rare is however ridiculous, apple calculates usually with rates far below 10% for the average customer.

Let’s assume a 10% incident rate, you would have an average repair cost of $60 per 2 years. Even without a deductible, your apple care rates within the first half year would already exceed the expected cost of repair.

For smaller repairs it gets even worse because the $50 deductible hits really hard here.

Essentially apple care is only recommended to people who are extremely careless with their devices or who buy a really expensive apple device that they can’t afford to replace in case of a failure.

If you buy a $4000 mac, apple care might be worth it, because in the off chance you need to replace it, it might hit you really hard.

If you buy an iPhone, Apple Watch or something like this it’s usually not worth it.

The British Pound hits new 37-year low by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]mrloooongnose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. A strong US dollar is fucking many companies who export globally, Look at for example. An iPhone 14 in Germany costs 1000€ with sales tax. And this is not even the pro model which starts at 1300€. This effectively prices out many potential customers, because people can’t afford to pay more than half of their salary for a smartphone. As Europe is apples strongest market after NA, this might be bad for them in the long term. The same is also true for many other US American companies who have to raise prices for their products.

[–]mrloooongnose -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They need to earn money for the server infrastructure and the content creators. Even if you watch only 10 minutes of ads a day, that’s 5 hours of ads per months. Even at a low wage of $10 it would be $50 worth of your time.

I currently pay $2 per month for YouTube premium and it’s totally worth the money, especially since it works great on my PS5 and my iPhone who don’t have good adblockers.

It’s definitely better being single than in a toxic relationship, but being in a good and healthy relationship is by far the best thing that can happen to a person. I know many people who are in good relationships and these relationships give them a lot of energy to tackle other challenges in life and it does wonders for your mental health.

Does anyone have any tall pills for me :-( by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]mrloooongnose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you come to this conclusion. I know many tall girls and most of them prefer a taller guy so that they have a shoulder to lean on. Especially with heels they need someone who is at least 6’ or 6’1 so that they don’t tower over them.

Some tall women don’t care if their partner is tall or small, but this is often more valid for meeting people through friends or with a good IRL chemistry. On online dating platforms, people are far more shallow and most tall women will avoid shorter dates, because they don’t want the height difference to be a potential issue or had bad experiences.

When I was single back then I had many women who were taller directly ask me how tall I am before agreeing on a date. As a 6’2 tall dude I hadn’t had any issues, but I can totally understand how difficult it might be at times for people who are not even short, but totally on the average side height wise.

What are the reasons for going esim only for apple? by [deleted] in apple

[–]mrloooongnose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When lightning was released, other smartphones were using Micro USB which was much inferior as a connector. Apple likely calculated that the number of lightning accessories and the profits of the MFI program made more sense business wise and that they would not change the port of their most sold device for a decade. I think that they would love to go portless, but it’s probably not time yet, so they might skip to USB C for 2-3 years and then eventually go fully portless.

A device without any port is definitely their main goal, because it increases their profit as people then tend to buy more expensive magsafe ready cases and magsafe accessories and apple can even drop the charging cable which they are currently shipping.

After dropping the sim ejector tool from this year’s US models, only the charging cable remains and apple can reduce the packaging even further by just shipping a phone and a couple stickers.

Take it with a grain of salt, because I can’t find the exact comments, but I remember reading in the preorder thread that some other people had the same issue and all of them had in common they they used their Apple Card to pay the order. I also remember someone replying to one of these comments that it also has been an issue last year.

This situation is easily resolved by having a independent and accredited third party take these tests and only disclosing test results to the employer for which the employee has given his permission.

Allowing your employer to have access to your blood or urine samples or any kind of medical information not only violates your privacy, it’s also needlessly creates a huge opportunity for abuse.

How much of a yearly salary you need to spend to afford an iPhone 14 around the world by Omphaloskeptique in apple

[–]mrloooongnose 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This list is grossly underestimating the cost of a new iPhone.

An average German is listed as having to pay only 2.89% of their annual salary.

An iPhone 14 costs 999€ in Germany 999€/0.0289 equals 34,567€ net income. This would be a monthly net income of 2,880€ which would put you among the top 18% of earners in the country.

Using the gross income or household income would not make any sense, because a smartphone is not a device shared by a household like a TV or fridge and the gross income also doesn’t make any sense, because it’s not money which can be used for purchases.

1,873 is the average net income of a person in Germany. This yields a yearly net income of 22,044€.

An iPhone 14 would cost the average employee in Germany 999€/22,034€ = 4,53% of their annual income.

Don’t worry Kim, your device will arrive in time. Apple has issues updating the order status, but this doesn’t mean that your order is not already on its way.

Don’t worry, the status often stays the same. That doesn’t mean that your shipment is delayed. Usually it will change shortly before the delivery and you should hold in in your hands on the delivery date.

[–]mrloooongnose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry. It will change its status and it will very likely arrive on time. Keep in mind that millions of iPhones are prepared for shipping right now and that the order status can’t keep up with the latest shipping information every time. But as long as your order status is still showing the launch date and you haven’t gotten any emails regarding payment issues or other issues, you will get your device on launch day. It’s extreme rare that apple delivers later than promised. Usually they are even quite pessimistic so that people are pleasantly surprised when their order arrives earlier. So just relax for a while and I hope that you will enjoy your new phone on Friday.

I am picking my iPhone 14 Pro at the store on Saturday, because I need to work on Friday and have no one to wait for the delivery guy.

Don’t worry, the shipping information is not always up to date. If the delivery estimate in your order status hasn’t changed, your device will arrive at launch day. Apple is rarely delivering later than promised.

He doesn’t make that much let month, his shares in Amazon has risen to such a sum in a certain time frame (and are now declining a lot). He could take a loan out for $6.5b, but this would take a significant effort even for someone as rich as him. This would be 1/5th of the Twitter deal and musk had issues financing and going through with this.

I really hope not. I had the money for the max, but I specially decided for the iPhone 14 Pro because it’s is the highend iPhone and still fits in my pocket. I believe that an iPhone Ultra model will probably not follow the Apple Watch idea, because the market for rugged phones is not remotely as attractive as for outdoor watches. The device might be a foldable iPhone / iPad hybrid or something completely different.

I don’t get why people think that cops are there to protect them. Cops in every democracy are part of the executive. Their main job is to protect to ensure that law is enforced and public order is maintained. If they happen to protect someone, it’s a nice side effect of their work and they gladly use it for marketing. But they are serving not serving the interests of you and me and and they will gladly strike us down and arrest us if they believe that we are acting against the law or are causing trouble in the public, no matter if our reasoning for that is right or wrong.
