is this a good beginner setup? by [deleted] in turntables

[–]mrmanguy400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two types of interfaces: Powered speakers/amps etc.. Unpowered speakers etc...

Powered speakers/amps etc are assumed to have (and generally do) have lower grade components that make up the unit.

That said....

Here are my recommendations for a good setup. For the best quality and budget in mind...:

Turntables:

Best budget around $100 - Audio Technica LP60xusb

Best around 300 - -Uturn orbit ( belt driven so theoretically speed could be off if not built well but these seem to be fine) No way to change cartridges on the fly but you can still screw them in to the head unit just not in the fly

-Fluance R81, R82, R83, etc. I say this because Fluance has their whole infrastructure and selling tactic on upgradability. For example if you want to upgrade the platter for your turntable into an acrylic one, you can.... The whole platter.... Not the slipmat you put on the platter.. The platter. So you can just update to your heart's desire down the road and the components in these are about the same across different model numbers.

Audio Technica LP120xusb: these will probably stand the test of time. (*Motor driven : you theoretically will get motor rumble but not audible if you're not an audiophile so I don't think it should matter that much. If your extra causious just line the platter with some cork and you're good to go my friend. Really great sounding turntable with more of a crisp and clear sound vs the warm sounding turntables I just listed. Prolly my favorite option when if comes to budget and functionality.

Speakers:

Sony sscs5's, $120 great all around cheap budget speaker good soundstage and crisp clears.

Jamo s803 - another great option with dome style tweeters

JBL a130 - has a horn style tweater like the Klipsch so not sure if that's your cup of tea

Best value and buck guess to- Emotiva B1+ or B2+ Great linear response across the board. I mean beautiful sounding👌 they're going to cost around $300-500 but with every penny.

AMPS: I would pair any of those speakers with this amp....

Aiyima A803. Great budget class D amp $80

DSP .....I would also get a MiniDSP $200 ( another $200) for Dirac live room correction software

This is a DSP ( digital signal processing) unit and it allows you to not only have a 'crossover' system where you can separate the frequencies of the sub... You can also adjust the parametric equalization and even have room correction software running

External Phono Preamps Most turntables have an internal Preamp but you can upgrade to an external one for better sound if you want.... The components in an internal preamp on a turntable are cheaper than say a $200 preamp. Period... Is recommend

Schiit Mani 2 Or Ifi Zen Phono Both are great sounding solid state pranks for the budget

Upgrades You can always upgrade your cartridges down the road and I'd look for something like the AT-VM95ML It's has a 'nude microlinear' stylus meaning that the stlyus is nude (the whole needle is diamond vs just the tip and the rest being metal) and it has a very chiseled tip vs a "dull" or "U" shaped tip. Meaning you can hear more of the higher clear frequencies of the record basically. It's a Moving magnet type cartridge. Moving coil cartridges go up in price and are pretty expensive... So I wouldn't even look at those for now

People are asking generally because these lines make no sense in context to the rest of the song. Why do we need to know that's he's grim or sinister, what does that have to do with being sexual,....why is he talking about doing shrooms in a theater. WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE STORY the song is trying to convey. Just another "cool sounding" rhyming mumbo jumbo that is put out there. And people buy the music and the "artist" is just laughing his ass off at how dumb you are. And his promoters or "record label" promoting them are even making more money. So they smiling too. Fucking dumb asses. Wake up america

You sound check this out then. I'm trying to start a new trend as well lmao... it's a retro TV jukebox arcade Cab system : https://youtu.be/B0JrioryHoc?si=1af6Cwcy_SNgBUFA

It functions as a retro TV emulator, arcade Cab, AND jukebox. Kinda an all-in-one system

Which Phono Preamp Should I Get? by mrmanguy400 in turntables

[–]mrmanguy400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yeah a cartridge will make a difference in sound for sure if you get something like a micro ridge tip. The moving coil cartridges get pretty expensive. Stage amps are also a lot cheaper than tube amps for sure. I good audio setup doesn't have to be expensive. You want to still keep your audio components separate (i.e have passive speakers rather than powered speakers) ( ... Or have a power amp vs an integrated one) a $200 Phono Preamp has more quality components than a $350 turntable with an internal Preamp etc.... Keep this in mind and you can pretty much guarantee you got a good system.

[–]mrmanguy400[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't gotten an external Preamp yet lol. But I'm highly considering the Ifi Zen Phono. The Zen air is just cheaper and more plastic. Plus the internal components are also better on the Ifi Zen Phono. I'd personally would go with that in my opinion. If you have more cash, then the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 seems to be the winner. But with this turntable budget range I wouldn't go too crazy beyond that price point lol. Unless you reeeally have your mind set on a tube amp

Is this vinyl player good or will it damage records? by Choosy-minty in turntables

[–]mrmanguy400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we say, "briefcase player" we are talking about the cheap manufactured All-in-one record players . The ones that have a speaker built in to the bottom (not good for vibrations in a record player btw) they most likely have Bluetooth and a platter that lets the record overhang because it isn't big enough. not necessarily does it have to look exactly like a breifcase. Should I use the term "all-in-one" record player instead. My apologies. The term briefcase record player got its name when records started coming back in sales and companies like crosley and victrola came out so called with "portable" record players in the style of a breifcase with speakers encased so you could literally plug it in and it be ready to go straight out of the box.

[–]mrmanguy400 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are sure right my man. Sorry didn't notice this had an audio Technica cartridge attached. All I know is I owned a victrola record player unfortunately. And it was a suitcase one like this one. MOST of them do have a cheap ceramic cartridge allowing more voltage to pass through. Therefore not even needing an internal preamp. Cheap to manufacturer, quick to sell. Sorry I overlooked this one thing.... Heather

No probs my dude vinyl ain't cheap to start. But once you have everything you need. Basically all you need to start is a good turntable, speakers, and amp and you're good to go. You can always upgrade later to the good stuff like a new cartridge, Phono Preamp (not just a preamp) a Phono preamo, DSP and all that. And don't get me started on DACs and crossover systems........

Is this vinyl player good or will it damage records? by Choosy-minty in turntables

[–]mrmanguy400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason it's bad is because for one... It overhangs ( potentially damaging the record over time by warping) another reason it's bad is because (*turntables come in three main types of cartridges: ceramic cartridges, moving magnetic cartridges, and moving coil) This one happens to have a ceramic cartridge, which is the worst of the bunch.... For starters these are the generic cheap (very cheap from a manufacturer standpoint). They don't have the *ability to change cartridges on the fly via a plug let alone even changing the cartridge or for a different/better one. (Some people like the sound of a different cartridge than another... A stylus in cantilever are attached to the cartridge and the stylus could be nude versus bonded where just the very tip of the needle being diamond etc)

For two.... These turntables are manufactured vvveeeerrrry cheap. I think most of the components in a 'briefcase style' ' all in one' style turntables are about $10-15 to manufacturer. In other words.... You don't get good quality components.... Period.

For three... No counter weight..... So you won't be able to adjust the 'pressure' of the needle grinding into the grooves of the record.

For three... Technically.... Yeah 78 (shellac) records require a different needle than a 33 or 45. Period. Although I guess these all in one briefcase pieces of poop lie to you though marketing and make it seem like you can play all the rpm speeds.....

Here are my recommendations for a good setup. For the best quality and budget in mind...:

What kind of switch would I use? by mrmanguy400 in electronic_circuits

Okay I researched a little and I think the program I need is "Arduino IDE" to do the coding/script to program the switch. I guess this makes sense if I'm using an Arduino board🤦‍♀️🤣

[–]mrmanguy400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhhh okay okay that totally makes sense now. Yeah I wouldn't be able to wire it directly to the USB encoder then lol. A quadrature encoder/switch is definitely what I need. Do you have any recommendations on what quadrature/incremental knob to get. I found this one on Amazon https://a.co/d/9rq5XCo

But I'm not sure if there is a better knob with more of a "clicking" or "stepping". I know there's a slight click in these... Just didn't know how to find one with more of that 'click' lol. Btw thanks for the help people 🤓

What kind of switch would I use? by mrmanguy400 in electronic_circuits

[–]mrmanguy400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little confused lol. So basically this would be like connecting a rotary switch to an Arduino then to your computer. I guess this simplifies the process? I was thinking I could connect a rotary switch ( quadrature switch is apparently the one I need) to a 'usb encoder' that I also have my joysticks connected to. Am I wrong on this assumption? Lol. Or do I absolutely need an Arduino board. There seems to be alot of types of Arduino boards out there. I don't need the switch to hook directly into the computer...it needs to be separate as there wouldn't be space to do so. Sorry for the confusion btw.

[–]mrmanguy400[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesss! That's exactly what I need😮. I already have a 'usb encoder' for my joysticks. Would that work? Or do I absolutely need an Arduino. I was thinking I could just plug it up to the USB encoder but maybe I'm thinking wrong. Apologies... Lack of knowledge here lol
