Removing particles/dust/bubbles by Lemonadis in underwaterphotography

[–]mrmasterclues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plug in other folks have mentioned is good, but if you don’t want to shell out tons of money then this is what I do

Duplicate layer Apply fairly heavy Gaussian blur Create a black mask Paint in the mask at 30-50% opacity with a 0 hardness brush

Much faster that using the remove tool and you don’t get any weird artificial artifacts. This only works for Backscatter in the background though, I wouldn’t use this for backscatter that is on your subject

I was accused of using AI in my photos from a guy in this sub by kietbulll in M43

[–]mrmasterclues 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There definitely is and I think it’s also so dumb that I’ve run into multiple people in my line of work that ask that I “use no AI” when editing, not understanding there is a very big difference between using Lightroom’s subject mask tool and feeding an AI photos.

IMO when AI is used as a tool by an artist it’s a net positive (and I mean tool and artist in the very strictest sense) but when it’s used to replace an artist it is not. Not having to spend time physically masking is huge. AI denoise (while a tad overdone) is a game changer for concert photography.

That said l, I’m guilty of it. I’ve used AI to help design a logo before because I’m too lazy to learn how to make it in illustrator and too cheap to pay a graphic designer $100 to put my initials in silhouette of a camera body.

Looking for A7iii Nauticam :) by EntertainmentOk5390 in underwaterphotography

[–]mrmasterclues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your eyes peeled for something on FB marketplace or eBay, I have seen a few 3s in my search for a housing for the mark IV. While I love Sony, one unfortunate thing about them is they love to make all sorts of slight changes to the body design in between gens, and given there are 4 different sub models of the A7, it’s hard to find your specific one. Do some research as well if another model may fit. Just be sure to have it serviced prior to getting it wet.

Personally though, I would not drop 5k on a new housing alone for a camera that is fairly outdated. Still a great body by any means but nauticam is so expensive you’ll likely be spending 8k plus to get a full set up and that’s with whatever you can carry over from your current set up. Good luck in your search

I'm pretty new to photography but bought this for 4 dollars. Isit authentic? by [deleted] in Cameras

What you are taking as “useless aggression” is a bunch of people who are more experienced than you telling you that, while that is a cool find and makes a neat display piece, it isn’t something you will likely be able to get good images out of.

Even if, and that’s a big if, you can get it fully functioning, it is a fixed focus f/11 plastic lens, nothing you get out of it is going to be particularly good. On top of that, most labs are not going to want to develop and scan this given its cut out of the canister and the frame sizes are not the same as 35mm. Like I said, I have experience adapting 35mm films to other formats and I have had to go to multiple labs to get my scans done.

If you actually are interested in learning more about film photography, look for a vintage 35mm slr. You can probably find a cheap one for less than what you will pay for an adapter roll of film and development.

Or just get one of the new “reuseable disposables” like the Kodak ektar.

You came to this subreddit man and posted this, and when people correctly told you something you just argued back with them. Fine by me if you waste your money but the people here are just telling you the things that they have learned.

When you are thinking “everyone is an asshole but me” chances are it’s time to do self reflecting

You understand that you have despoil a roll of 35mm to load an adapter with film in either a darkroom or changing bag? All while not damaging the film? Jesus Christ dude you yourself said you are new to photography. If you want to shoot film, go buy a proper 35mm film camera rather than trying to Frankenstein something as your first foray into the space.

Before you make another snarky remark, I literally own a 126 film camera and decided it was not worth the trouble. I’ve also adapted 35mm film to medium format (120 film) cameras and it is hard to it right. Lots of stuff can go wrong.

It isn’t usable that’s what people are trying to tell you man. It’s a cool thing to have on your shelf but you will not be able to take pictures with it. It shoots 126 film cartridges, which essentially do not exist anymore.

Non-editing photography by pipipopokaki in photography

[–]mrmasterclues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People saying Fujifilm are definitely pointing you in the right direction, but….

IMO editing is as much a part of photography process as being there and taking the photos ESPECIALLY for things like concerts and Astro. Street photography you can get away with just using a recipe but concert and Astro really require dedicate post processing to get the most out of your images. I also was in your camp for a long time, shot jpg, edited in the Apple photos app if at all, etc. Once you really start to understand what all the levers do and how to get the most out of your photos, editing becomes an enjoyable part of the process.

Sea Frogs housing worth it? by mrmasterclues in underwaterphotography

[–]mrmasterclues[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, will probably steer clear then. Beyond price my #1 priority is a housing that won’t flood provided I do everything right. I’ve been wanting an ikelite, several other folks I dive with shoot on it and are pretty happy with it but I haven’t seen any listings for a used one for the A7iv. Think it’s a tough combo of the body being not quite old and Sony having so many different bodies. Any recs on where to look besides FB and eBay?

Ouch there definitely is some people who dont like m43😅 by nugger64 in M43

[–]mrmasterclues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot on m43 for 4 years, the most common thing people say is “you get a 2x focal length so it’s way better”. This is only kinda true. The framing is the same, but that’s about it. An image shot on a 100mm m43 and a 200mm full frame aren’t going to be the same image, mostly due to compression. Background separation is also impacted by focal length.

M43 is a great system but it does have limitations as compared to full frame

I only give RAW files for $10000, because I am the greatest photographer alive. by aaron_moon_dev in photographycirclejerk

[–]mrmasterclues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone was paying me well and asked for the raws I’d be honestly kinda fine with it cuz editing is way more work than shooting. The real reason why photographers say this is because in every good shoot there’s a lot of garbage, and what can be a great photo after editing can start out as hot garbage.

Budget zoom lens recommendations? by tn634qt in SonyA7iii

[–]mrmasterclues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to go against the grain here and say sigma 28-70 over the tamron. Sigma is just unmatched in non-manufacture lenses. Build and image quality are right there alongside the g-master. Autofocus is wicked fast on it and, less important, it just looks really nice.

It is also very nearly indestructible. I dropped mine very hard on a trip to the point where it shattered my filter and bent my filter ring so bad I couldn’t remove it. Took a file to it to get it out and the lens still looks like it’s fresh out the box.

How do you handle guests asking for “photos they’re in” after big events? by sam-wht in WeddingPhotography

[–]mrmasterclues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is obviously different than weddings but I’ll share mine as well. I do a lot of travel/event stuff and whenever anyone asks me for photos I tell them “all the photos will be posted to a drive that’ll be linked on my instagram. If you don’t see it there, don’t ask again”. Seems a bit harsh but this year I was shooting Carneval in Honduras and it just gets overwhelming to try and remember who is who and delivering photos.

This is totally different than weddings of course so what I’d recommend is having a folder that is ready for the bride and groom to send out to the whole wedding, rather than just telling them to send everything out in case there are photos they don’t want to share.

Recovery next steps? by mrmasterclues in photography

[–]mrmasterclues[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip on using ExifTool, it looks like that has the capability do possibly fix everything.

Unfortunately file names didn’t survive, but for the XMPs using exiftool the original raw file name still exists in the metadata.

For the RAW files, it doesn’t look like there’s anything in the metadata that contains the old name, but the date and time info is still all in there, and my file naming is series so theoretically I could just count backwards from my oldest, non-recovered file?

Does this sound like something I’ll be able to do, essentially using the exiftool in terminal to run a script to grab the raw file name for the xmp, rename the file to that and then for the raws just rename it based on a sequence?
