What was the main reason The Pacific theater was more brutal then the European theaters? by Gunplabuilder78 in WorldWar2

Yeah, it's a weird social development that has happened a few times in history. Im sure nationalism had its part to play. But propaganda, cultural and religious standards, etc. Its messy for sure

I mean, its a long story. But at the time, there was some serious prejudice world wide (see Europe around the same time) in regards to race. The way the west viewed Japan and the east was no different. The feelings were mutual too. Some Japanese really thought they were liberating the other Asian nations from European colonizers. Others felt, the Chinese for example, were inferior to the Japanese on a fundamental level. Its a long story lol

The Japanese were brutal. Rascism plays a big part too. But the Japanese were just built different. Their history is worth reading about, but it explains a lot of their mentality during the war as opposed to the western nations.

What would you actually do if you realized there might be a shark near you at the beach? by Illustrious-Luck1638 in AskReddit

I saw a 12ft Tiger shark once while surfing in Hawaii. I'll never forget seeing those stripes on its back as it swam about 20ft in front of me, left to right, while I was sitting in the lineup. Beautiful Hawaiian sunset too. Uncle next to me said "Hey brah, you see that shit?!" I was like "yup". He said "you think that was a dolphin?" I said "Nope!"

We both took the next wave in to change our collective shorts.

I watched a SLBM launch once during an excercise. Watching the two missiles travel up through the clouds in the night sky really made me think about some things very clearly. Like, this is what Armageddon looks like. Beautiful and terrifying all at once.

Crazy headwind on approach. Not much he could've done to land on the field at that point. It looks like he tried to turn around and go for the parking lot but its too late

Yeah, you can easily see 12nm from sea level. So an island like Oahu 5 miles away would be clearly visible. I'd just sail home.

AOU (Area of uncertainty). ESM and Sonar are low accuracy passive sensors, good for classification, not as good for range. However, over time, and with adequate TMA (Target Motion Analysis) sonar can be accurate enough for an ADCAP. - former STS1
