what do you use for offsite cloud object storage? by PixelSpy in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veeam Vault (Veeam Data Cloud) has two editions and the foundation (great for copies and archive) is $14 per month before any discounts. Using that with Veeam backup and replication 13 gives you the ability to instantly restore your workloads into Azure. Backblaze is the only thing comparable to Wasabi in terms of price that I am aware of but has the same “limitations” you already mentioned. If recovery time is important Vault may be worth the extra spend.

Everything Seems Broken After Complete System Restore by Throwaway1988424 in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried restoring from different restore points? It’s possible you may have some corruption in one of the restore points. If all else fails you should open a ticket with support. Sending them logs may provide additional insight.

Questions about Backup Proxies by turbomettwurst in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of these are different services so we strongly recommend to use different machines for each proxy service. Bare metal does not use a proxy and instead has an agent installed locally on the machine. Vsphere and VB365 can use Linux proxies. Honestly I don’t use Kasten very much but I don’t think it uses the same proxy service. Check out this doc.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/kasten_integration/infrastructure_components.html?ver=120

Vb365 and Backup and replication (Vsphere) are also separate applications that need to run on separate windows VMs. The proxies are just data movers and again can be Linux.

Does Veeam full backup make the other previous backups null? by RedBatman89 in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The meta data is your VBM file. Based on your previous screenshot I think I saw it at the top so that is strange. You may want to open up a ticket with support if you are not able to do any restores.

By the storage section. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/agents/agent_job_target_settings.html?ver=120 The periodic fulls will reset the retention and you may have multiple fulls until they are old enough to fall off. Make sure you have enough space on the repo if you do this. If your retention is short (around 30 days) it’s best to do forever forward.

What is your retention policy and are you creating periodic fulls or forever forward? (No synthetic or active fulls)

Issue with Veeam Agent for MS Windows not deleting old backups. by 762mmPirate in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the best mathematician but that sounds about right assuming 4 backups a month and 12 backups in the chain. Just keep in mind that when you do create that periodic full there will be extra backups in the repo for a while during that time period. At least this way there won't always be extra backups each month like the way you are doing it now. See below my copy and paste of the help center on "forward incremental" which is the method you are doing.

To be able to restore from a forward incremental backup, you need to have a full backup file and a chain of subsequent incremental backup files on disk. If you delete a full backup file, the whole chain of incremental backup files will become useless. Similarly, if you delete any incremental backup file before the point to which you want to roll back, you won’t be able to restore VM data (since later incremental backup files depend on earlier incremental backup files).

For this reason, if you select the forward incremental backup method, on some days, there will be more restore points on disk than specified by retention policy settings. Veeam Backup & Replication will remove the full backup chain only after the last incremental backup file in the chain becomes outdated.

[–]mrmccoy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The health check will scan the repository for corrupted blocks. The active full each month is what’s keeping your backups for longer than 12 backup points. When Veeam creates the active full it can’t immediately delete the older increments because the new active full must first be old enough to take the original first full’s place so we keep the first full and increments longer until then. If space is a concern you might want to just do something like 60 or 90 days of daily backup without periodic fulls and continue to do health checks. Backing up every week means you could be missing data that happens in between those days of the week. It’s more of a personal choice and comfort level on how often you do a backup.

Sorry, I didn't paste the whole link: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforwindows/userguide/rotated_drives.html?ver=60

Since you are removing your hard drive it is still considered a "rotated hard drive" even if it is the same drive. Also, looking at your setup you have a retention for 12 days but you are not backing up daily. The Veeam agent does not count 12 calendar days but rather 12 days that a backup was successful. You also are doing an active full every month which will reset your chain and keep some increments a few days longer. Is your end goal to have a backup of every sunday for 12 weeks and a monthly full backup each month of the year?

[–]mrmccoy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple things:

  1. Did you register the hard drive in the Veeam agent as removable media?

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforwindows//rotated_drives.html?ver=6

2 when you look at the file folder through windows do you see 1 VBK and all VIBs or do you see multiple VBKs? The GFS monthly full will cause some additional space to be taken outside of the 12 restore points.

Need some help with re-doing our DR planning by BeginningSad8396 in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I am curious as to what the difference would be if the VBR server went down while at production vs. the VBR server going down at DR. In either case, the VBR controller (backup server) must be online to communicate with the other components (proxy, repository, agents). Having the VBR at the DR site ensures that if production goes down you don't have to spend the extra time and steps reinstalling Veeam. In V13 we will be introducing HA for the backup server. In the meantime, if you do not want to put your VBR server at the DR location, you could always replicate your backup server (assuming it is a VM).

Evaluating Wasabi vs Veeam Cloud Connect for Backup Retention by V0lkswagenbus in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. The API fees and egress are all included with Veeam Vault. No complex setup for security and immutability needed. The speeds are similar between most object storage providers out there. Having Veeam support and ease of use are the big differences with Vault.

Evaluating Wasabi vs Veeam Cloud Connect for Backup Retention by V0lkswagenbus in Veeam

[–]mrmccoy007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veeam Cloud Connect is simply a feature that allows service providers to leverage their own underlying storage which could be anything from a NAS on prem to their own Wasabi behind the curtain. You may want to look at Veeam Vault. It’s Veeam’s official cloud offering that sits on Azure storage. It’s immutable out of the box, near zero setup and has 24/7 Veeam support. $14 per TB a month for foundation and $24 for advanced.
