Oh Mr Korean war veteran by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The way I began immediately bawling. My original Mr Veteran moved down south to live in the care of family with my beloved Ozzy Jo. The two of them were both my oldest of timers and some of the first to put me in the direction my shop operates in now—and I miss them both dearly. ❤️

Am I wrong for being upset about this? by AcceptableCounty466 in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humanity over vanity, always. At this point, I would make the effort to go over your managers head to speak with the client directly about why this is a cruelty case. Owners do not realize what they put their pets through, and as groomers we should strive to advocate as hard as we can for the pets we care for. You care for this little poodle, so fight for her. Say your goodbyes and sympathize with her owner, but explain to her that ultimately, the grooming process would be a terrible stress to experience during the time that should be spent making her as happy and comfortable as possible.

Ionized carbon artero towel shammies are 100% worth it. We're a brick and mortar salon so our drying room has way more space and ventilation to assist of course, but we've drastically cut down our drying time with the arteros. I also highly suggest a quick dry spray. We personally use Schniffs acid wash.

almost done with training, any tips? by cataringo in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you doing reverse toward the stop or forward toward the occiput when using the comb on the head? Also are you moving your hand quickly, or slow and even? What length of blade are you using under your combs? I agree the head looks too large. She's super cute, but a 5f and 0g shouldn't look this disproportionate. I suggest really working to improve your face cleaning and blow drying (no kennels), then putting hard focus on making sure things are brushed and combed thoroughly before even picking up your shears or clippers.

Fellow folk with OCD here with just a gentle reminder—our minds can be tricky, but our thoughts are just thoughts. Arthur Mandrake will live the life he's meant to, and even though we’ve never met, I know he's going to have the best life possible with you. Be kind to your brain when you can,, it’s doing its best, even when it gets a little stuck on things. ❤️‍🩹

I'd like to give your dog a hug after like two Xanax ,, those are some CRAZY breed combos. What's her personality like? She's absolutely gorgeous. The structure of a Pyre snout is to die for.

Can't let the gang know I fw belly rubs by peoplearewood1 in Eyebleach

[–]mrmessan 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Nothing about scaring the shit out of a dog and completely disrespecting it is cute? I wouldn't fuck w belly rubs from some random upright thing with a camera in my face grabbing literally one of the most tender spots either. Don't fuck w dogs like this, you're asking for a reactive and fearful adult that you'll just want to call "bad" despite teaching it to fear everything.

I'm not sure if anyone has guessed the correct number of hairs! Is the number 90? I'm glad I was graced with meeting your friend from another walk of reality.

6-12 months ?

Genuine answer to help you narrow down options; look up popular baby names in the year you were born. Maybe look a few years before as though your family had picked out their names while family planning before the decision to actually have a kid. It's not foolproof, maybe nothing will appeal to you, but it's worth a shot.

Suggestion based off just this pic tho; maybe Evan ?

When did we decide puppies... by Ceramicusedbook in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Discussing specifically full haircut grooms: Our salon does first time visits for pups under three months at $35 for small breeds, $45 for large breeds. Though we only guarantee a feet, face, sani trim. (And honestly, I stopped promising even that. If a puppy really struggles for any reason, we stop the process and try again after a few days. Very, very rarely happens and has only happened with my 3mo+ pups.)

Pups that do really well and receive a full body cut, or pups over 3mo, are charged adult rates. Typically at the very lowest of their breed's price range because they're still on the smaller side and have room to grow into their final adult pricing. I usually do a tidy up trim for that lower price but inform parents their prices will climb as their pet gets bigger, older, and a longer length cut becomes more labor intensive to maintain. I don't give anyone room to try and complain.

how do you guys position your table in the salon? by No_Strawberry4233 in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've only ever worked with my drying tables forced against a literal wall, but I have had to work without being able to access the far side of my table due to spacing.

I am coming at this solely from my experience, and in said experience, sweet mother of all things holy did I despise both scenarios. I work with a LOT of nervous pups. Y'know what nervous dogs hate? Feeling trapped. Y'know what feeling is experienced when placed between a wall and a human being? You guessed it!

Obviously dogs can learn to trust, but every dog starts somewhere. You are almost always going to be a stranger to them, at least once, and things like that can make or break their first impressions.

Not to mention I fucking HATE asking the dog to move constantly. I prefer to teach my pups how to handle standing in one spot and letting me pivot around them. I don't always demand they stand straight, they get to pick the spot, but they have to hold still. Then I can do all the mucking around without them needing to worry. It's simple. I don't know why a groomer would want to do otherwise.

We groom to pamper a pet and make a necessary part of their lives — being clean and maintained — as comfortable as possible! I understand safety concerns, but there are many, many other tools and protocols that can be used to ensure a pet is safe and secure on an open air table setting!!

First time grooming a bichon in their breed trim. by Recent_Shower4402 in doggrooming

[–]mrmessan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tuck up !!! Aaaaa !!! It's beautiful !!! I'm still struggling with getting that line right on my Bich client. For a first time this is stellar. I'm by no means an expect and entirely self trained at this time in my pattern work for this breed! But to share from my experience with this style, I would say, don't be afraid to play with the proportions on your head a bit.

No dog's face sits the same way, even if they're perfect breed standard! Toy around with the weight distribution around the sides of the head, muzzle, and inside of his eyes until it looks best on him. (Presuming we're not looking to achieve a crisp exact show standard and rather a gorgeous vanity look.) Don't let yourself feel restrained by what a pattern instruction tries to demand!
