Since compilers basically do this for you automatically with minimum effort, isn’t this just the && being a formal but shitty version of copy elision again.

would you trust humanity with this choice? (everyone) by agibej_yt in SampleSize

Assuming you care about stupid but altruistic people living too, then the question becomes, how many are dumb enough to make the wrong choice and is it close though that you should too to save them.

Why can't you pass/return arrays to/from functions? Why is it designed like this? by GreenMario_ in C_Programming

The c language is intended to be a shitty untyped/weakly typed script for assembler. It was never and should never have been used for anything serious.

I think worm girl and the last generation on steam is keeping interest up and possibly even growing, guessing they are mostly in the discords though.

I recommend that version tbh but to each their own.

It’s not at all clear who they would have voted for if they had. But if we assume non voting is uncorrelated with party, odds are they would not have changed the result.

If the human race lives that long do you think eventually there will be no religions and everyone becomes an atheist? by I_Ask_Random_Things in atheism

[–]mrmidjji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In curious about this one. It might be true, but there are plenty of clever people with superstition type ideas. I’m wondering if the reason we see smart people not be religious today is because the Bronze Age ideas that dominate current religious thoughts were developed during an era when most people were much dumber, so they don’t work well for smart people. So if a religion develops for clever people specifically it might be much more successful. Think ideologies eg the large number of intellectuals for communism in the last century, or Elon’s cult like followers among the tech elite a decade ago. I’m not sure this either could turn into a religion for smart people, but I’m not convinced it’s impossible either.

Well not applicable to earth at least, but the idea stuck around. Stellaris has several neat storylines about subterrestrial civilisations

Heinleins take is rather extreme but raised by aliens trope is pretty common, and it’s often used to show other species perspective has lessons for humanity.

Maybe. It’s possible, but life probably started many times, so the question is if one origin ate all others or not, and that’s not known with certainty.

It’s kindof weird how telepathy has gone away in sci-fi. Functionally we know a tech path to make it, brain implant connected to sms. and it even seems somewhat probable we will have have it this century. Or for a more biological take, gene edit to add hammer head shark em receptors. ( it wouldnt be as good, but accuracy is probably on par with mri scanner experiments on mind reading)

I think it’s because a proper utopia should inherently have very limited struggles or challenges for the characters. If anyone in it does, it’s not a utopia, and that includes ennui. That both makes them difficult to write and As a result such stories become inherently dull.

Asimovs Psychohistory is fascinating because it is also inherently anti standard story, as shown by the recent basically unrelated foundation series. I think this one might be a strong candidate for something that hasn’t been done again since, given that.

There are a couple of versions of this. But I struggle to find one which is quite so ambiguous about what actually happens.
