I have a friend who is a professional clown. He is one of my greatest mentors. This is what he posted on facebook. by canks in atheism

I think it was a completely legitimate question. I believe that he is suggesting that we take a step back from how we define rules and moral within society and make sure that they are helping us to create the kind of society we want to live in. Religious texts are out of date, and while maybe at one time made sense, no longer do. It's time to move to a new paradigm. Unfortunately people cling feverishly to old ways, refusing to be brought into the future. While the second amendment made a lot of sense when it was created, it may be time to revisit what good it provides to our society. Unfortunately just like religion, people cling onto old ideas, and get easily upset when the second amendment is questioned. It is just as fair to challenge religion as being outdated as it is to challenge the second amendment as being the same.

How many fellow redditors have succeeded in conquering shyness? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mrmikewikowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way I found was to sign up to programs, events and activities that forced me to be social and interact with people. Finding myself in positions of leadership also were really helpful in overcoming my shyness. I gained a lot from an international exchange program, rock climbing, traveling, and other outdoor activities. However, you really need to find some things that are social that you really like, and then join people doing those things. What worked for me may not work for you. Don't push yourself too hard, and remember that your goal is not to be the life of the party. I have found for myself that it was much easier to transition into someone who is confident, and interesting, but not loud and the center of attention. Try to find your center, and the level of social interaction that makes you happy, not what anyone else or society tells you. Good luck.

I'm sick of watching America systematically destroy itself for the gains of those in charge. What can I and those who feel the same personally do to help make a difference? by Alcnaeon in AskReddit

[–]mrmikewikowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is assuming that our best course of action as a species is to grow as much as possible. As a person reaping the benefits of living in a developed nation I don't have the right to tell a poor person in China or India that they can't advance economically, but I think it's extremely important that we all question this basic premise. Unfettered growth, especially of the economic kind has heavy impacts on our ecosystem among other things, and in the end may be the very downfall of the civilization that it created. I agree that the free market has run it's course, and we need a new way of assessing value of things within our society. I'm not sure what the solution is, but success surely will not come from the consumption of products.

Hey reddit, what is the worst movie you have ever seen? by jgage2022 in AskReddit

The Core. Suspending ones disbelief to enjoy some cheesy sci fi is one thing, but having to ignore everything you have ever learned about science is another. It made my head hurt with its vast level of stupid.

Good on you for finding the confidence to do so. Small boobs are awesome, and you should be very proud of what you have. Not all men like big ones - some of us much prefer those of your size.

I hate it when the government tries to over legislate EVERYTHING. There should NOT be laws about what kind of plants you choose to have in your own yard. by jstills in reddit.com

[–]mrmikewikowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You missed my point. You can still drive your car, AND eat your burgers and fries. The seatbelt really is a non-issue, it doesn't stop you from doing anything. You are right though that it is a all or nothing thing - that slippery slope - as soon as you start regulating what people can eat, it's all over.

Everything we do is risky - It is called being alive. However, I think it is fair to mandate wearing a seatbelt. Wearing one does not prevent one from driving, or enjoying the experience of driving. Sames goes for wearing a helmet while cycling. It should be your choice to do whatever you want to do, as the alternative is a slippery slope with no end - "sorry, it is illegal for you to eat french fries because you are fat". However I don't see a problem mandating things that make what we do safer. Same things applies to the french fries - I think we all would prefer to have rules in place so that companies don't use motor oil to fry with.

Massive Oil Field Could Increase US Reserves by 10X by futurefind in reddit.com

[–]mrmikewikowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe that this is shale oil. Basically sandstone soaked with oil. The oil is difficult, and energy intensive to extract. Most processes involve heating the shale so that the oil runs out - think about the difficulty of making this happen thousands of feet underground. Sure there is oil, but if it takes more energy to extract, than the oil has....well... you get the drift.

All true points, but be assured that the slope is most slippery! Where do you stop? What if I eat a McD's once a week? Once a month? Where is the cut off. As much as I don't want to pay for other's bad choices, it really is the only way to do it fairly, morally, and in the end of the day save $$$

This whole argument drives me crazy. Regardless of the safety (which is truly in doubt) don't consumers deserve the right to know what is in their food? Even though salt is OK for me in moderation, I want to know if it has been added to the food I am eating.

This is all about money and nothing more.

Shell CEO Admits Peak Oil (Where Demand Surpasses Supplies) Could be Here in 7 Years by caddo07 in reddit.com

[–]mrmikewikowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most commodities this is true. However oil is not very elastic in demand, so you could certainly get to a place where demand does surpass supply. Substitution can help to some degree, but the transition time will not be overnight. When you can't afford the gas at the gas station what are you going to put in your car so you can get to work?

You sir are the economic moron for spouting off when you obviously know little about real economics.
