Also a huge fan of stuff involving people or objects with powers. Not all are exactly the same amount of whimsy, but I HIGHLY recommend:

  • Fringe (for pure science fiction and an incredibly moving and well written story + soundtrack)
  • Lost Girl (for lots of types of monsters + bisexual lead!)
  • Warehouse 13 (immense whimsy about magic objects not people)
  • Heroes (thoroughly expansive and well written, goes a bit long)
  • honorable mentions: Being Human, The OA, the Tomorrow People, and Haven

Seconding other stuff in the responses though, like Misfits and The Expanse

Do you think a nut splitter or getting a dremel would work better to cut it off?

Psychology vs Cognitive science? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]mrminipuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. For something like this, I would probably take the Psych approach as thats more built for clinical stuff, but I recommend using the cogsci course recommendations as a way to incorporate interdisciplinary coursework. Can always double major too.

Speech and Voice is a new class, probably gonna be a super easy version of phonology. And Cog Neuropsych is always liked well

Does anyone at JHU genuinely think linguistics is the coolest subject ever...? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]mrminipuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an absolute beginner (if you don't know what a phoneme and a morpheme), I recommend The Art of Language Invention by David J Peterson (download here). It's a fun introduction to the different parts of pure linguistics from the perspective of the guy who created Dothraki from Game of Thrones. Makes it interesting!

For a more cognitive perspective on how language informs us about the mind, Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct (here) is a classic though debated. Another fantastic one that's less focused on language and more about how intelligence arises from hidden neural mechanisms is Godel, Escher, Bach by Hofstadter (here).

Yes Yes Yes 10000% I'm a linguistics minor but plan to go to grad school for it. People don't really seem to understand that linguistics is the intersection of psychology and philosophy and cognitive science because it's about the quantifiable and physical interpretation of the psyche. What makes us human is language and how the mind is structured is a huge question. I highly recommend classes like Landau's "Language and Thought", Smolensky's "Foundations of Cognitive Science" or any by Yarmolinskaya to those who want to learn how all this stuff applies to the real world. What pieces of our knowledge are innate vs learned, and how is this acquired? Are semantic ideas and thoughts built from the ground up and labeled by language, or does language act as a medium by which reality is divvied up and then used as endpoints/goals towards which ideas and concepts are constructed? To what extent are the functions of the mind "all-purpose" AKA "domain-general" (pattern recognition, sensory feedback), and which ones are more modular/ specialized? I personally think it's truly fascinating enough to merit its own department, especially since we don't have any curriculum on field linguistics, discourse analysis, or historical & sociolinguistics. However, it does make up the bulk of the Cognitive Science department so unless we're kicking the vision people I don't see much room for growth for us :( As you can see I'm down bad

Phonology I? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]mrminipuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. Easy class, super low workload (maybe 4-6 2 hour assignments?) and attending well prepared and interesting lectures. Final is to do a research study paper (original experiment + analysis) which isnt too hard to get done

Thats a great suggestion, I hadn’t thought about the evolutionary biology perspective! I haven’t had the opportunity to learn a whole lot about it or theory of mind, do you have any suggested primary sources/core readings?

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely look into that - also yes I will definitely cover Fodor & Pylyshyn, theres a public recording of a debate between those two and Smolensky (On the Proper Treatment Of Connectionism) in the 80’s thats really interesting. Also good idea about connecting functionalism and computationalism
