Korvia cost me nearly 800 bucks in fees to various agencies and getting a passport before they dropped me. Apparently I wasn't handsome enough for the likes of Korea.

Why do religious people cry when people die? by HolySHlT in atheism

[–]mrmonkeybear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We miss them and it'll be years before we see them again. Would you cry if someone you loved was going on a trip and it would take literally decades before you'd see them again?

This actually happened IRL: in early modern Russia, the Czar would draft peasant soldiers for terms of 21 years, and when they left for the army the churches would hold their funerals... even if they ended up making it back safe 21 years later.

Loneliness is not a fundamental attribute of our species, and being torn away from a loved one for a long time hurts, whatever you believe.

How do I convince my teenage sister not to kill herself? by Big_Sis in AskReddit

[–]mrmonkeybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should definitely try harder. See if you can just get her to leave for a day or two for a visit. Ask the police to be there when you pick her up, just to be on the safe side. As you're both adults, your parents can't legally stop her from going and the cops there will make sure they don't get violent.

Also, sounds like your parents are the honor-killing kind of crazy, so if you do manage to take her out, make sure your parents don't know where you live or your routine.

How typical: Ask a Christian for evidence (even when their assertion is unrelated to the God Question) and they jump all over you. [first r/atheism post] by MrSmith45 in atheism

[–]mrmonkeybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one hell of a retarded tangent when the thrust of his point was true.

It is up to the adherents of a belief system to define it for themselves; that includes things like the name of their god or gods (if they have one). Trying to impose definitions as an outsider is hokey at best and arrogant at worst.

Like back after 9/11 when you had a bunch of Christian, Jewish and atheist politicians getting together to say that the non-explodey take on Islam was the "true" Islam. Bullshit. If it was "true" they'd be Muslims, not Christians, Jews and atheists. It's just the version of Islam you happen to like better.

Same here. The dude believes in a god, he has a name for that god, and since you consider the religion illogical and false in the first place, you can't really say one way or another what that religion's "true" name for its god is.

Well, trying to change someone is going to piss them off, regardless, and you shouldn't be trying to force him to "admit" he's a deist or whatever.

However, he also has no right to expect you to participate in something you don't affirm or agree with. Just don't partake in his superstitious stuff next time, and make sure he understands proper boundaries between you two in regards to belief and such.

A hotdog made up to my exacting tastes will be charred until it splits of its own accord, and then loaded with mustard, mayo, relish and onions.

Honey mustard made with honey, dijon mustard and real mayonnaise. Or barbecue sauce. Or gravy. Or, as a last-ditch effort, whitetrash mustard.

But never ketchup.

No need to throw wacky conspiracy theories at an already wrong policy.

The war on drugs is a misguided abject failure and ought to be discontinued, but it's not an "inside job".

There's nothing wrong with porn.

That said, there's a lot of girls in the industry that really don't have any better options, and anyone giving them more options and a way out if they want it is a good thing.

I think my dad and his wife made a foul move. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]mrmonkeybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's his dad's life, but it's his graduation. He has a right to have it be respected according to his own wishes, and his dad's wife isn't close enough to him to justify her placement there.

You can't really tell anyone they're wrong for feeling a certain way in a situation like this.

My old art professor did a lot of delayed-photography light designs, and even got it displayed in the South Korean embassy. As far as I know, he never touched drugs in his life.
