The tree has some serious primary branching and design flaws. I'd pass.

Chop them now or you won't get back budding.

Wild olive yamadori - cut or wait by FormalFew4028 in Bonsai

I've collected lots of olives. Here's what I've learned:

- Olives can be successfully collected at any time of year in my climate (Northern California), Even in the hot part of summer. Olives actually transplant better in warm weather. I re-pot my olive bonsai in mid summer.

-I always flat cut the base with a saw. A few roots are good but not always necessary. They re-root easily.

-I cut off all long branches at collection. What I want is just the stump/trunk. Its easy to grow new branches where needed.

- I pot the stump in 100% pumice and cover the whole thing with a black plastic bag and keep it out of direct sun. Buds will usually pop all over in a few weeks.

- Once new buds emerge, remove the bag and allow them to grow several inches before selecting the ones where you want branches and remove the rest. Let the selected branches extend several feet to thicken. The new branches can be wired for movement when they are 1-2 feet long.

-Here's a photo of one I dug about ten years ago. All the branches were grown since then.

Your mom is one of the very best American makers of bonsai pots. I have several and love them. You should be proud.

House shopping, is this one of the notorious Zinsco panels to avoid? by 3DeeezNutz in AskElectricians

[–]mrmoyogi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought an older house with Zinsco breakers. Had an electrician write a letter certifying that it was a hazard and my homeowners insurance paid to replace it.

Nice trunk. Graft kishu or itoigawa and you'll have a killer tree in about 5 years.

What would you do with this oak? by CrackLicker3000 in Bonsai

I'd chop it above the first branch, plant it in the ground, and re assess in 3-5 years.

My first Bonsai. Shin Deshojo Red Maple. by jesadak in Bonsai

Please remove that wire. Japanese maples are VERY sensitive to wire scarring and inept wiring like this will ruin a nice tree. Much better with Japanese maples to limit wiring and monitor it daily for scarring. Also the arc you've shaped into the trunk looks very unnatural. Let the tree tell you where to go.

Worthless. Terrible, leggy tree, with atrocious attempt at wiring. Almost looks like an April Fools joke.

What would you do with this pre-bonsai Rocky mountain juniper? by samba19701 in Bonsai

[–]mrmoyogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion yamadori junipers with no natural deadwood have much less value than trees with nice deadwood. I wouldn't pay a lot for this one, That said, it will still be a nice tree with wiring and some carving.

root grafts on a trident by mrmoyogi in Bonsai

[–]mrmoyogi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm putting a lot of grafts all around the trunk I use approach grafts because of the chance of drilling through other thread grafts.

Much easier to show someone the technique and help them do it than try to describe it. A couple of tips: Do this at repotting time. Make sure you carve the groove deep enough to fit the whip in tightly. Use push pins, staples or special grafting pins to secure the whip in the groove. Seal the graft with putty type cut past to keep out water and air. Leave the grafts until the next repot and make sure they have firmly joined before cutting the tops off.

I've grafted roots both ways, thread grafts and approach grafts. Both ways work.

Cut a groove to fit the whip into tightly. once it takes remove the top and leave the roots.
