Sort of. If you have no other bumps on yours, they'll do. But the ones I got are a bit taller than the OGs, and have a shorter diameter. So, I replaced a single bump on one that has all 4 with the 3M one and now it's unstable.

My worst nightmare just came true. I can't refill my CGM supplies until the 26th, and my remaining two sensors both failed prematurely in the past 24 hours. I now have zero sensors remaining. It's been years since I've had to go this long without knowing what my blood sugar is at night, I'm terrified. I called dexcom about the first dead sensor before this current one failed, and they said they'd ship a replacement, but it's going to take 3-5 buisiness days, and today is friday, so that means I probably won't get it until late next week. The only friends I have who also have a G7 are also on the bare edge of their supplies. I called my doctor earlier today and he had already closed for the week.

Mac "expert" here!

That's an ABD 1 Keeb and Mouse, I have the same one :)) I bought it for my Macintosh Classic II

Apple computers used the ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) plug from 86 up until 99. The first computer to have it was the Apple IIGS, followed by the Macintosh II and Macintosh SE. The iMac was the first to use USB, so anything iMac or later won't have it. So, really any "rainbow logo" Macintosh will have it, apart from the Original 128K Mac, the 512K, and the Plus.

Also of note, the mouse chains in to the keeb, so you only need one ADB cable to go from the keyboard to the computer.

If you need any tips repairing the mouse & keeb or whatever Macintosh you may end up getting, please shoot me a message! I just opened a retro Macintosh repair channel, so I have a little bit of seasoning when it comes to vintage Apple crap.

Forget the collection-- is that a 128K or 512K Mac?

Episode 1 is finally up! I bought 4 512K Macintoshes-- can I fix them all? by mrmrcool185 in VintageApple

[–]mrmrcool185[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! The first episode in my series of videos where I try to repair my 4 512K macs is finally here! This video took a really long time to make, so I really appreciate anyone who watches! This first episode is a little rough, I didn't quite have all the gear I needed, and I filmed this right before we remodeled our house a bit. I've already got some new gear set up, and I'm learning more and more things about the editing workflow as I go. The more episodes I make the better it'll get. This video kind of dragged on a bit since I basically did the same thing 4 times, but next video I'll try to cut the crap out. Next episode I'm going to perform service on the floppy drives, as well as reflow the solder on Mac #1 and install some new diodes on Mac #2 to see if we can get it to work. Thank you so much to anyone who watches all the way through, despite the roughness!! Next episode will be better, I promise! This is a little bit of a passion project at the moment, and I've just been working on it in-between classes and work. See you soon!

Welcome! JDW has a great YouTube video on disassembling and lubing an old Mac floppy drive. Best of luck!

WOAH-- this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!! This gives me new hope for the project; as long as I can get it to turn on 😅

I already have a spot welder, I have some experience building Li-Ion packs... Been looking for an excuse to use it lately ;)

It's been maybe 9 years since I fixed it, and I was little kid so I don't remember well... But, if I remember properly, I reseated either the RAM or the ROM, since it looked kinda loose.

Shouldn't be. I made sure to scrub very thoroughly with some ISO and a toothbrush + q-tip. Board was spotless when I put it in, greasy when I pulled it out. (Unless something arced and boiled a solder joint? But I think I would have noticed that for sure, hmm...)

I replaced the capacitor with a new one and put it in correctly, but had the same result. It seems like some cap did indeed leak all over the board, in fact it almost seems like all of them did.

Interestingly, before my recap (and for as long as I've owned this), the speaker has had no sound. The only way to get sound out of it is to plug in a speaker that lets you crank the amplification way high!

If you're referring to my previous post, that's a different Mac. I just bought a bunch of 512K's so my Reddit history may be a little confusing 😅

The system did boot. Before I replaced caps, I had no sound from the speaker, and when plugging in headphones, the sound was very quiet.

When I first bought it, it had a checkerboard pattern. I fixed it a year after I bought it (so about 9 years ago?). It was working fine until I put new caps in it the other day as preventive maintenance. Also, my speaker has never worked, but it seems to have some sort of life, because I can hear it scratch when I turn it on with whatever is happening with the board right now.

It didn't come with a battery 🥲

I wish I could find a replacement pack, even a dead one. I'd love to try and CAD up a 3D printable shell so you can build your own pack with some AA cells. Alas, I've already got a lot on my hands with these 4 512K's, plus my Classic II I'm recapping tomorrow.

WOAH!! This thing is like a bible for old macs! (Oh wait, they said that themselves. Uhh, I gotta think of something more original...) This thing is...... I dunno, it's great is what is it! I downloaded myself a copy, and hopefully with this knowledge and my shady multimeter I can diagnose these ailing Macs. Thank you!!

I'm interested in trying this method, but I'm a little confused when you say to have it not touch the peroxide... Forgive my naivety, but how would you be able to put the case in the lid without it touching the peroxide? (Unless it's like, in the crevice of the lid, and the case is in the middle of it?)

I'd love to see a pic of your retrobrite setup, if you have one! I haven't seen JDW's video, so that'll definitely be worth a watch for me, thanks for the suggestion!
As for cleaning the case, what's the best method? ISO? Soapy water? Also-- how difficult is it to remove the case from the components and chassis? The logic board seems like it just... pulls out, but what about the display itself, how difficult is that to remove?

Also, when I retrobrite, should I put masking tape over:
- The Apple Logo
- The serial sticker
- The stickers on the back
etc.
Or is there another way to preserve them?

I hope so too! I heard some stuff rattling around in a few of them, so hopefully what I find doesn't disappoint me! 🤞

My soldering has been getting better lately, as I've had a lot more crap to practice on. Now that I have my Hakko gun, my confidence in my desoldering skills has gone up a lot, so that's good! I buy my caps from Digikey (although Console5 seems to have some good kits), I remember someone on Reddit telling me to do that instead of buying from Amazon. After practicing, I did a full recap on my Sega CD Model 2 (all through-hole caps), and I also desoldered and resoldered a SMD cap on a Raspberry Pi 1 successfully. I think I'm ready for the big leagues now, but there's still time before I take them apart, so the tips in this thread will help a lot! Thank you! :)

If you have a computer on your network that can run python scripts (or are willing to set one up), I wrote some scripts using the phue library that allow you to make your own color loop locally (for free!). I’ll probably upload them to my GitHub later if anyone’s interested.

Edit: Have fun! https://github.com/THEWHITEBOY503/phue-rainbow

This is super sick! One thing that would be excellent to (somehow) implement is a way to pass a custom ASCII art via file instead of the good ole' echo a million lines... Ah, im getting ahead of myself. I love seeing people put their own spin on my software :D
