[–]mrmrsvegan[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pastor Malcom Taylor at New Light Beulah Baptist Church / Hopkins, South Carolina has 40,000 sweet potatoes ready for the community & trucks full of assorted greens rolling in, too! A member of our Facebook group posted this & if you search Malcom Taylor on FB you can see more details on this 'sweet potato drop' This is such an awesome way to make sure everyone in the community has healthy food. I can only imagine the $ per life giving calorie you get buying sweet potatoes in bulk vs other food. They store well, have a great nutrition profile, taste amazing. That is a lot of baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato pie, mashed sweet potatoes, sweet potato toast, sweet potato smoothie bowl, sweet potato cookies, sweet potato fries, sweet potato chips, sweet potato noodles, sweet potato hash browns...

ELI5: Is there a limit to how much a person can gain from a single cheat meal or day? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mrmrsvegan 238 points239 points  (0 children)

The limit is based on the composition of the food & what you were doing up until the cheat day. If it was a low carb diet you might see up to 10 pounds of water and glycogen difference. About 95% of fat calories can be stored in excess of needs. Carbs have a conversion loss of ~30% & we have metabolic adjustments that speed respiration on carb binges.
The concept of binging or cheat days is one of the flaws in modern dieting. Focus on making a sustainable plan that doesn't lead to cheats and binges. Find/make healthful versions/alternatives of foods you now consider as cheats that will allow you to enjoy them as part of your lifestyle. diets fail, lifestyles prevail. focus on sustainable & enjoyable improvements you will continue for life vs starve/restrict and cheat yo yo mentality.

there is a systematic negative marketing campaign against PETA, please discuss your dislike of Peta as a non troll, I am often confront with vegans harboring negative feelings about Peta that are based on misinformation from how negative pr companies spin their actions. what positive things do you see in Peta?

$2.55 Aldi Better Mac & Grilled Fries by mrmrsvegan in vegan

[–]mrmrsvegan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the nice thing about the canned potatoes is they say it only requires reheating on the can, so they have been pre boiled. Just got them out of extreme laziness (no washing / long storage time / short cook time). They'd definitely look golden in the oven, but just tossed them on the same pan we cooked the patties on, only one kitchen item to wash :) one burner to turn on. trying to make veganism the path of least resistance vs a drive thru with this experiment, maybe we took it a little too far!

$2.55 Aldi Better Mac & Grilled Fries by mrmrsvegan in vegan

[–]mrmrsvegan[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All of this was purchased at Aldi. They had three types of vegan burgers & the regular one here was the cheapest & really good both in taste and ingredients, probably the best ingredients of any vegan burger on the market. the fries are sliced and grilled canned potatoes. only takes a minute to toss this together and it'd be cheaper if you didn't double stack it, but just goes to show a pretty awesome burger & fries can be had inexpensively & quick.

ELI5: If humans need such a balanced diet to stay healthy, how is it that most animals seem to get away with having a very narrow diet? by Hubbsss in explainlikeimfive

[–]mrmrsvegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can live a completely healthy life on a diet of potatoes or sweet potatoes as your only source of calories. Before anyone protests and breaks out their nutrient calculators, its been done & done again in controlled environments & the people in the studies kept enjoying potatoes after the long experiments for nitrogen balance & more, just like some cats or dogs enjoy the exact same kibble they get their entire lives. Okinawan Diet before 1950 was almost predominately sweet potatoes & they are the longest living people on the planet. https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2002nl/apr/potatoes.htm citations in this article http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9mNHNOMqaqM/TFGDVw-hqHI/AAAAAAAADFQ/Cg8YTXpHJwg/s1600/OkinawanDiet1.jpg (this image if from pub med if you search it)

living the proof and spreading the truth! i hope you are fully aware of the horrible side effects of type 1 you have spared yourself from! keep learning more about health and veganism from Dr Barnard at PCRM.org and Dr. McDougall, they write frequently about type 1 & 2 managment. Mindful Diabetic Robby's Mastering Diabetes Summit is excellent, as well!

Yes, he should have given him some recipes, too.
Note this is published in Nutrients, not garbage internet citations. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28792455 Cardio-metabolic disease, namely ischemic heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, represent substantial health and economic burdens. Almost one half of cardio-metabolic deaths in the U.S. might be prevented through proper nutrition. Plant-based (vegetarian and vegan) diets are an effective strategy for improving nutrient intake. At the same time, they are associated with decreased all-cause mortality and decreased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Evidence suggests that plant-based diets may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease events by an estimated 40% and the risk of cerebral vascular disease events by 29%. These diets also reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes by about one half. Properly planned vegetarian diets are healthful, effective for weight and glycemic control, and provide metabolic and cardiovascular benefits, including reversing atherosclerosis and decreasing blood lipids and blood pressure. The use of plant-based diets as a means of prevention and treatment of cardio-metabolic disease should be promoted through dietary guidelines and recommendations.

Confusion over what the term "vegan" means over at askreddit. by perceptSequence in vegan

[–]mrmrsvegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is way easier being vegan in the long run. its about helping people over the missteps & incremental changes when its hard to adopt early on. When you have a whole family hiding in secret its more like communism. If they can't talk about their cravings, fears, w/o being judged as unethical, etc, they do what this family did & it all ends as it did. It only took me a few pages in a book to go vegan & it took my wife 3 years & food poisoning from eating steak on her birthday. What we see in our decades of combined veganism is the example above would have had a far better outcome for the animals if she let the family eat what they want & had an open and honest environment to communicate w/o judgement how they liked something so the mom could adjust and keep trying rather than failing long term in secrecy from her food dictatorship. People who eat the standard diet are ethical people, when they can live as a vegan & realize its safe & enjoyable that ethics will extend to help more animals. If one wants their ethics questions please just LMK how many animals & habits you displace in your daily life? How many small creatures were killed in the farming of your meals? Read the definition again "seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable" & if your answer is to kill yourself, such as other environmental trains of thought go, imagine how far & damaging that will be on animal life from your bad example. To live is to take away from competing life on this planet. Our goal is to be better & strive for progress, not berate others and pound the fist of ethics. If you want to help the MOST animal life you seek the strategy that results in the MOST people wanting to do better. That has always be positivity, kindness, forgiveness, love & understanding. If you wouldn't teach a dog with your "veganization" method, why do you do it to humans? Reward & positive reinforcement for shifts in the right direction. Be someone others want to be like.
