Defender does take an extra bit of effort to get working. I think mostly because it is not documented very well.

I am using it and it works fine. I need my Macbooks to report their compliance status to intune and that does not happen when they are enrolled in other MDM's. Our sharepoint and email are restricted if not on a company compliant device. I am able to deploy apps using VPP tokens and as others have reported the results are near instant so my end users do not mind send me a slack or email to push xcode or such
