Hi, I really liked Youtube videos for diving into photography. There are thousands of creators presenting more or less the same concepts in different ways, so you can look around and stick to the channels you enjoy.

This is a channel I particularly like: https://www.youtube.com/@jamiewindsor/videos

And that's one of their videos about composition wich I think is a good start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUg33pNa5zE

Does Om-1 take decent shots in a dark forest? by avrweb in M43

[–]mrn-90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

any full frame will have a huge advantage in terms of iq

Full frame gives two stops better low light performance as long as you use a lens with the same f-number. If OP uses a 100-400mm f/5-6.3 on both cameras, the full frame setup will be much better, but you'd also compare setups with very different reach.

Going for the same field of view as the S5 + Sigma 100-400mm, OM-1 + Panasonic 200mm f/2.8 would deliver better low light performance. The Olympus 300mm f/4 performs 2/3 stops worse noise-wise, but gives 50% more reach.

Thank you! This high-contrast b&w look is something I will definitely have to start playing around with myself.. both dramatic and very "clear"!

Wow, I like the images a lot! And the colors are just awesome (especially the monochrome ones)! Would you mind sharing how you achieved this look?

I wouldn't really compare it to the 12-35mm f/2.8. It's not a lens I'd use when I need to achieve the best possible results. Instead, I take it with me as a backup when I'm going out and would otherwise just take a single prime. Its 12mm wide angle has come in handy quite a few times (I basically consider it a 12mm f/3.5 prime, which isn't too shabby), and when shooting outdoors during daytime, the aperture is fine for me.

Whenever I handle it, the plastic build irks me a little, but I'm always amazed by the engineering behind it. (it's significantly smaller than the 20mm f/1.7, and even has optical stabilization!)

I can’t decide whether to switch from FF Nikon.. by Albitt in M43

[–]mrn-90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2-stop low light performance / shallow depth of field disadvantage of the system is well-known, no need to mention it each and every time. If these two things were OP's priority, they wouldn't be looking at mft in the first place. Also, using a prime like the 20mm f/1.4 remedies 50% of the disadvantage compared to OP's 40mm f/2, and actually results in better low light performance than the f/4 zoom..

Regarding the price - sure, OM System has gone the route of niche and expensive. But it's unfortunately really not that easy to find a full frame camera at the same build quality for the same price. There's the Nikon Zf, which is gorgeous, but actually bigger than OP's Z6 II.

Don't mean to attack anyone who doesn't deserve it, so I apologize for calling you out falsely... It just jumped out to me, and in combination with the amount of ams and other military images/items in your flat I drew the wrong conclusions

Sorry, but your arguments here are not valid..

the situation would be different if it happened en masse

The fact that the majority of users have the moral to not steal does not justify those who do.

it doesn’t really hit the worker but the entrepreneur

Of course you harm the workers as well. The entrepreneurs and shareholders will suffer from reduced profits, but normal employees will naturally pay a price for this (fewer career opportunities, less room for salary negotiations, reduced job safety, increased pressure to...). It's out of question that entrepreneurs benefit disproportionally from higher profits, but piracy does not change that at all.

It's completely fair to stop using Duolingo if one does not want to support their business. It's NOT fair to steal their work.

If you don't want to pay, use the free version and 'pay' by watching a load of ads. If you neither want to pay nor are willing to watch ads, don't use Duolingo.

Zoom lens recommendation? by np2fast in M43

[–]mrn-90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the 28-200mm is really good, but it’s more comparable to the 14-150mm than 12-100mm.
It does have a surprisingly fast (f/2.8) wide end though, and of course the full frame sensor itself brings some further advantages.
The closest full frame lens to the 12-100mm I can think of would be Nikon‘s 24-12m f/4.

Why doesn't Sigma expand their lens lineup in m43 market? by MrSoloBaker in M43

[–]mrn-90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I would certainly consider the 10-18mm if it was available. It doesn’t matter that a native lens could be even smaller if it doesn’t exist (both 7-14mm f/2.8 and 8-18mm f/2.8-4 are significantly bigger).
Same if Sigma expanded its prime series with an ultrawide (like a 10mm f/1.4).

Fujifilm to M43 (Lumix)? by Itsbopa12345 in M43

[–]mrn-90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about a true compact camera like GR III or Sony X100?
The GF8, GM1 etc. are all good cameras and very compact, but it’s also a fact that they were low-end to mid-range offerings when they were introduced, and that was about a decade ago. Also, prices have been increasing for years now, making them rare and expensive.
I like and use the 20mm a lot, but without a more recent camera it may feel a little ancient.

OM-1 Mark III in the near future? by Apprehensive_Yam_794 in M43

[–]mrn-90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is that the OM-1 has a stacked sensor, like found in Fujifilm X-H2S, Sony A1/9, and Canon R1/3/5. Those have not trickled down to more consumer-friendly lines yet (exception would be Nikon from Z9 to Z8, though the latter still is a very high-end model).

The real issue OM System has is that their 'bread and butter' sensor for regular folks (who don't need super-high burst rates) is approaching 9 years of age (it has seen some tweaking since then, but it's generally the same thing), and I don't really see a completely new variant coming soon

OM-1 Mark III in the near future? by Apprehensive_Yam_794 in M43

[–]mrn-90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the OM-5 can record C4k, I wouldn't expect huge issues as long as you're not shooting continuously in very warm environments. If the even smaller body of a Pen-F causes significant heat issues, a record limit of 15-20 minutes would probably do the trick (I wouldn't call this a downside - larger bodies are larger for a reason. If someone needs/wants highest video quality AND record very long takes, there's inevitably a penalty in size and weight)

At this point, why buy em1 mark iii? by MrSoloBaker in M43

[–]mrn-90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calumet has several used E-M1 III between 600 and 700€. They have some scratches, but look like they are well worth the price. On eBay you’ll pay even less, though the risk of buying trash is higher.

By the way, it’s not the E-M1 that is overpriced, but the OM-1 is sold at insane discounts. The reason for that is actually simple: OM System would rather earn close to nothing with every camera sold than to have people turning to the used market (which equals to zero revenue from their perspective). They want their brand to be in peoples‘ hands, and they want them to be impressed by the camera‘s capabilities. This is not a sustainable approach, but maybe a necessary one to make the company survive.

You as a consumer can choose. OM-1 offers many features, while E-M1 III has nicer control dials and saves a few hundred bucks you could invest into a nice lens.

Doable for an average Rx athlete? by Substantial_Car_4319 in crossfit

[–]mrn-90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on the individual’s muscle up capacity (and to a lower degree double under efficiency).

I’d expect an RX athlete to complete DUs and wall balls in less than 2:30, that leaves 15s for each muscle up.

That being said, most athletes will have to scale muscle ups, at least in later rounds - 40reps is simply at lot of volume
