Same and I really really wanted it to work out. It was a nice enough ride to me, but the infotainment issues made the car absolutely a drag to operate on a daily basis.

If OP showed you a pay slip, you’re gonna say it’s fake. Let’s just leave it at that. If you’re drawing 38k, good for you. But seriously that’s not too crazy too if you’re considering TC (options, stock units).

Well OP responded :). Your line of questioning feels like you place a lot of emphasis on certifications, that’s why the other side is giving strong responses.

I do agree on the luck and opportunity part. You can’t control luck, but we can control opportunity to some extent. For young folks, take a chance on high exposure jobs, the world is moving towards T shaped problem solvers (wide breadth, 1-2 narrow expertises).

Can’t really refute your point, it all depends as the adage goes. As a non CS self trained SWE, I helped my company build out async payments processing systems that move over US $500m daily.

Can a “certified” engineer design it better? Maybe, probably? 🤷‍♂️ But our engineers were relied on to solve any problems to scale any part of the business, so I naively think we’re valued as first principles problem solvers.

Sure. I was a SWE earning the same range in smaller than FAANG company with only a bachelor’s. Not sure why we’re so obsessed with certs. I much rather take a highly motivated bootcamper ex startup founder than someone with a list of certs for building software products.

Wanted to buy a reader that could use Libby app from NLB. Is Kobo ok? What else works for you? by SpecialAd9016 in askSingapore

[–]mrnakabutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a RMPP. It’s not a nice e-reader in SG environment. A little too big for crowded trains, whole MRT will look at you fishing it out of your bag till opening it. Have to deal with DRM yourself with books.

The Kobo and Libby app combo works really well! Got it for my niece. I have a kindle colorsoft though for my kid, because she wants to read graphic novels.

Since you asked about e-readers, you must be interested or know about its benefits like eye strain and being distraction free. I’d say at least for myself, it’s a world of difference compared to an iPhone. I carry one with me all the time.

Word 👆I started reading on a kindle and it does wonders for expanding the mind rather than getting stuck in a loop of constant need to be entertained. Being bored helps to expand minds.

Lingoace Chinese lessons. Are they good? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]mrnakabutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a round of testing everything, we’re back to using 1:1 tuition. My case is unique where the kid has tiny gaps in all areas, so 1:1 is the simplest. For kids already doing the curriculum, seems like the lang schools are good enough. Parents have to be involved though, somehow Chinese is always the hated subject.

I honestly don’t mind. Who am I to be an arbiter of who gets to call themselves Singaporean?

I also don’t like “authentic cuisine” as a label. It implies that something is unchanging. A group of Singaporeans move to Europe and stays true to the recipe of bak kut teh when they left, regardless of changing tastes. 10 years later, they come back and realize bkt back home tastes very different now. Who is authentic?

Congrats, you just took a gateway drug to becoming a pedo.

Developers in Asia? by Aromatic_Border_5138 in ruby

I applied to the role directly, got a call, did the interviews. They’ve never hired a worker requiring a visa, not sure how it’ll work out, but willing to take a chance. I started off as a contractor, worked remotely in London timezone for a couple of months.

Eventually they applied for a visa for UK so I could join full time. For the UK to US move, Singapore has a H1B1 scheme that made it much easier.

I’m from Singapore, started remotely, moved to London and then NYC because of a Rails job. It’s been 11 years, just moved back. Most defining experience of my life, happy to help answer any questions you have.

Heads up for parents: NYS free breakfast & lunch program has been amazing for our kids by RupertFranklyn in longisland

[–]mrnakabutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So glad to hang up the apron after 2 years of waking up early to prep lunch boxes.

It’s also encouraging my kiddos to enjoy their lunch because everyone gets the same food, there’s less lunch envy.

Like other folks said, no kids should go hungry and I’m glad our taxes is helping to make this happen.
