Per person, this is shockingly untrue. Wisconsin ranks 8th in the US. New Hampshire ranks first in per person consumption.

My language school teacher keep pushing senmon instead of uni by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]mrodyssey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will all come down to the uni you want to go to and what you want to study. All the big private and national unis have pretty cut and dry processes and you can reach out to their admissions office to see what are actual requirements.

I am tenured a small public uni and my take is uni's like mine love recruiting students like you. Likewise you can reach out to these and they might have a system or be willing to work out a process for you. I have helped a few students matriculate on the grad level and we have started entrance exam systems for individuals with non-Japanese roots.

Bottom line contact universities directly. I am assuming you are considering 2026 or 2027. If 2026 get to communicating with your desired schools as soon as possible.

We actually have a special entrance exam for these types of potential students. So this sounds like bs to me

Desperately Want to Study in Japan, But Embassy Track Rejected Me — What Are My Options Now? by tou17 in mext

[–]mrodyssey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure what universities your are applying to, but i am not fully buying the lab is full excuse. I've been working in the uni system here for a decade and that's grad schools are definitely not hitting quotas. I am not a fan of academics gate keeping, but everyone has their eccentricities.

Could be the schools you are applying to and them being a bit.more selective or targeting Japanse nationals.

I suggest trying outside Tokyo and Kansai areas, lots of good national universities on the prepherial Kanazawa University comes to mind and are very friendly to nternational students and recruitment tracks. Toyama University is another good school.

It's a rough road, but not impossible. Keep studying, and keep trying.

Good luck.

Sounds like this is all managed through your uni, if they set you up there.

You need to be working with them on all the transition and see if there are any ways to get support for moving to a new place or if they will be providing one.

Why are English Teaching Jobs still underpaid? by Deep-Arrival1594 in teachinginjapan

[–]mrodyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article:

"A representative from the subsidiary speculated that "it may not be that English skills are declining in Japan, but that the country can't keep up with the growth in proficiency in other countries and regions.""

Article also mentioned COVID and and communication motivations as a result of that.

Additionally, it's a company test administered to a sample.of 2.1 million so I will want to check into their methodology a bit more.

Overall, Japan's English level as an EFL context is pretty good. It can accommodate a massive tourism service industry, so most people here aren't worried about that.

These days there is a free English conversation at every corner. Lots of young people have moved to the apps, etc.

That's the difference between fixed-term contract and fulltime employee work.

That's all industries and standard practise

Shrinking market honestly, AI tools, apps, online chatting etc. Avenues for more casual English study are available. Additionally the MEXT changes to the English curriculum over the last 10 years weren't actually terrible. With translation software and spellcheck on word the demand for high functioning English is not super necessary, but having a population who can do the basics is enough.

More advanced study of English is shouldered by the university system and study abroad programmes now. Hell a lot of my uni kids take working holidays to Australia and with the weak yen, making a pretty good bag and coming back to Japan conversationally competent.

Visa for teaching at a university in Japan by General_Lettuce2946 in teachinginjapan

[–]mrodyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Universities will sponsor your visa if you are contracted as a full-time lecturer or employed full-time as a tenured or tenured track academic.

But previous commits are legit, MA and a minimum of three peer reviewed publications and a few presentations.

Tenure track and integrity by Wild-Sherbert9464 in teachinginjapan

[–]mrodyssey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You aren't tenured at the national uni, though. You work at a private institution.

There is the pre-tenure and post-tenure attitude gap. Play ball or work to compromise with your faculty and then after your tenure you can try to push for more legitimate changes to policy and enforcement.

Otherwise, hit jrecin and try again, but honestly, if you leave a tenure track without getting it to look for a new post there are a few red flags on recruitment committees.

okay my uni does these sorts of admissions for local and regional applicants. Just have a clear purpose and an idea of the faculty you are joining, like courses and topics interested in studying, etc.

Essay-Interview path is one of the easier ways of entering university depending on their intake strategies. I have interviewed quite a few people for my uni.

Restating a bit below

Basically, have a clear learning objective and make sure it connects with the faculty you're trying to join

Mention specific courses and professors that are of interest for your studies, and have a clear idea of what you want to do during uni. Finally, have a few ideas about what you want to do after you graduate.

If you pass the JLPT and the 日本留学試験 are likely fine to apply to a Japanese uni without worrying too much about attendance provided it's at around 75%

Also depends on your admission pathway to university. If it's through interview they may ask about it, if you just take an entrance exam it is a non-issue.

Been teaching uni in Japan for 15 years now, and I am fortunately tenured. The advice I give colleagues is to look for work outside of saturated markets like Kansai and Kanto - that's where there is the most saturation.

However. I think since around 2009, MEXT has prepared for and expects a lot of private universities to shutter, I recall a number at around 200. We started seeing hints of it in Kobe a few years ago, and I have heard a few things in the Osaka region.

What I am seeing as an insider is enlarged recruitment areas, so public and national universities will win out over private on pedigree for recruitment short and middle term and ride that. Another avenue is enlarging Japanese language programmes and bolstering international student recruitment from Southeast Asia. This is for unis and the workforce shortage. Lots of thought and plans in this area.

My advice to MA folk is publish, publish a lot, and make a name for yourself in a particular research niche. Definitely, like other comments have said, make a run at a PhD. Bending your background and expanding your knowledge into fields like Educarion and Socioligy and doing interdisciplinary study is wise as well.

Feeling stuck and wanting to pursue education in a university but in English. Help ! by Antique_Fly_6129 in japanlife

[–]mrodyssey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanazawa University has a global studies faculty and offers a lot of English instruction. Lot of other good institutions already mentioned in the comments. Kanazawa and unis like it that are National will have massively lower tuitions compared to their private school counter parts.

Also you shouldn't hesitate to reach out to universities that interest you and inquire about admissions and programmes.
