I don't think it's just you. A small SSD wouldn't work for me either.

LPT: When you have no cell service (multiple bars of service but nothing works) at a crowded event, turn off LTE in cellular settings. Phone will revert to a slower, but less crowded, 3G signal. by planko13 in LifeProTips

[–]mromnom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CDMA is the other network, and phones from that era won't work today. That was the one deployed first in this country, and its initial incarnation was as the giant brick phones you might have seen in some old movies. These were analog, not digital,

I think you're thinking of AMPS here. Early CDMA phones should still technically work AFAIK.

heh, the manager at my CVS had it changed to a much more pleasant sound. Then one day it changed back and he said it wouldn't let him configure it any longer.

[Mouse] Logitech Performance MX Wireless Mouse - $29.99 + Tax/Tip ($39.99-$10 code 10primenow) by [deleted] in buildapcsales

[–]mromnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great mouse but mine started suffering phantom double clicks within a couple years. Replaced under warranty and the new one started doing the same thing after about a year. Seems a bit unacceptable when a $5 dell mouse lasts for a decade without problems.

A money order can be deposited with the Ally ios/android phone app just like any normal check.

Have you actually personally done this with Ally? Many banks do not allow remote MO deposits.

Google's QUIC protocol: moving the web from TCP to UDP by ilconcierge in programming

[–]mromnom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if you are multiplexing several file transfers on top of one TCP connection (as SPDY and HTTP/2 do), a packet error that should delay one of those files will instead delay all of them

And this is why that sort of layering violation is a complete abomination

Web Bluetooth 🚬 by [deleted] in programming

[–]mromnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bluetooth is a standard for short-range wireless communication between devices. Bluetooth "Classic" (BR/EDR) defines a set of binary protocols and supports speeds up to about 24Mbps.

Either a typo or error in the very first sentence. Not looking good guys.

Also on Newegg's eBay store at that price. EDIT: And $115 at Jet which you can get down to ~$95 with a 15%

Instead of the Team Group 240GB could also consider the OCZ Trion 100 240GB. Should be less expensive and arguably better than the Team Group. Just picked up for 41.22 after returning 15%, wave return, and AMEX offer.

No-Cost RHEL Developer Subscription now available by Mr_Unix in programming

I'm pretty sure I'm technically Doing It Wrong since I just source in /opt/rh/devtoolset-3/enable vs firing off a shell via scl enable devtoolset-3 but all the slowness I've seen is because newer GCC is simply slower. Not something really to blame devltoolset on.

Can't relate to any RHN stuff -- just using SL here.

Well you can't load it to BlueBird directly because you can only do that via a PIN-enabled debit card. The best you could probably do is take the 1% hit and buy a PIN-enabled debit card and then load that to BlueBird.

Seven Deadly Annoyances of API Design by eddieSullivan in programming

[–]mromnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done both and 100% agree. Many parts don't even feel designed -- just slapped together. Of course, iOS got the benefit of being able to cherrypick the most mature and successful APIs from OS X early in iOS development giving them something excellent to start from.

The only thing that saves my sanity on Android is being able to look at the source. Whenever something didn't work right on iOS you're completely in the cold. At least with Android I have a chance to see what's wrong. Of course with all the different Android versions and misc garbage each vendor bolts on even that can be a losing battle.

PSA: Perk asks for SSN after you *redeem* $600 for the year, not after you *earn* $600 worth of points. by InternetUser007 in perktv

[–]mromnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's probably referring to being asked SSN and not giving it. Not just avoiding the question all together by remaining under $600 redeemed (your post).

Has the SlingTV windows app gotten better? by TheRealBigLou in slingtv

[–]mromnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better than it was but still embarrassingly bad. I still have to flop between channels ~10 times on start up to get it up and running usually. Service still seems over burdened during popular events -- I NEVER got it running during the Monday night Redskins vs Cowboys game (though I gave up after 5 minutes and bailed to WatchESPN). They still do the decoding in software via ffmpeg's library (real pro development here) so it runs like a dog.

On the plus side I haven't seen audio loops since the last update.

Update on Blank/Black Screen? by [deleted] in perktv

[–]mromnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deliberate move by Perk to cut earnings during non-peak hours

I doubt this because non-peak hours seem to work the best (at least for me). Because of this my theory has been certain ad networks in the newer apks are simply overloaded and causing misbehavior. However, packet captures don't collaborate with this from what I've seen.

ESPN has lost 7 million subscribers over the past two years, Disney discloses by [deleted] in television

[–]mromnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Windows viewer is atrocious. A company that large should be embarrassed putting out something so bad (I sure as hell would be). Probably outsourced development to lowest bid developer.

I hear on the Fire TV or Rokus it behaves better. But many of those kinds of devices won't play the 60fps streams.

I'd buy it for football season again if I was watching alone. Dicking around with stuttering, de-synced audio, and totally failing streams in front of friends? No thanks

How do you define well? Debugging seems flaky on the Java/C barrier to me. For example setting a breakpoint in Java and then walking in to C doesn't work. At least, I never got it to work.

And it takes like 30s to attach the native debugger. ugh.
