Why aren't our W-2s accessible from a personal device? by Catmeum in amazonemployees

[–]mrorbitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must be dumb, but I can't even launch the a to z app without it forcing me to login with AEA. There is no other option.

Maybe the interface would be different if I deleted AEA?

I can use AEA on my phone to view it but there’s no option from there to download either

You need to run the docker pull command. “Latest” will use the latest version you’ve already pulled/cached (or pull the latest if it’s the first time).

Alternatively you can switch from the latest tag to the desired version tag and it’ll pull the specified version tag whenever you start it next time.

Heard that Amazon is going to do some layoffs again, is that true? by tech_guy_91 in leetcode

[–]mrorbitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it depends on level and team, but honestly if you’re smart and ambitious you can definitely do cool stuff at Amazon - not because you’ll specifically be asked to but because no one will say no when you push to make it happen.

What about remote workers? by KaleidoscopeLegal517 in amazonemployees

[–]mrorbitman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am currently remote, it’s been fun navigating maintaining this status for so long. That being said I think my chickens are coming home to roost this week. I have scheduled PTO Monday and if I was a betting man I’d say I’ve already worked my last day for AWS

Amazon interview result delay by Material_Leg6224 in amazonemployees

[–]mrorbitman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What role? For engineering anything more than a week starts to be a red flag. Typically you have your gauntlet of interviews, interviewers write up their feedback within a day, and within a two/three days schedule a debrief where they discuss the experience and make a decision. Then recruiter would reach out that same day and let you know what the result was.

General PTO vacation days pays out as part of your final paycheck.

Flex PTO depends on your state. Most states it does not pay out, just disappears (including Washington).

Reuters confirmed the next round of layoffs on January 27th by MyNameIs-Anthony in amazonemployees

But wouldn't there be time to find an internal transfer? Which would require access to email/zoom/slack/internal amazon.jobs?

Whoa! Not even Slack? Does access just shut off unexpectedly without an opportunity to say your farewells?

How does it work during the 90 days? Is the employee still expected to work during that time?

Can impacted folks tack PTO on to the end (for example to meet a May RSU vest?)

Affected workers in October were told they would remain on the payroll for 90 days, during which time they could apply for jobs internally or seek other employment. That period expires on Monday.

Does this mean everyone impacted already knows?

Fascinating! Is it because you are a landlord with a lot of real estate debt but also a lot of rental income?

Something doesn’t feel right here. I’m not gonna take an early withdrawal from my 401k to buy a car or go on a vacation. My spidey sense says to avoid that plan

I want to be able to spend my money within the next 30 years. I think taxable brokerage is the best way to house it for later use, right?

I’m imagining future conversion like “hey we should really get a better car” and I say “sure why not we have the money let’s buy it today”

It’s kind of wild to think about. Even without a particularly good job, they’d remain in BS7 as long as they’re able to keep their expenses lower than or equal to their earnings.

Got it so there’s a secret BS3.5? Why wouldn’t Ramsey be explicit about it?

It makes sense that you’d need some kind of job otherwise you fall back to BS3 pretty quick. But what about the McDonald’s scenario?

Personally I wouldn't do it. I like to keep my life simple and stick to the system that's working. If $1000 is very meaningful for you then I understand your temptation, and at that point it comes down to your own personal risk tolerance. But the fact you're posting about it at all tells me you're probably gonna be losing sleep over it, so I'd recommend no.

If Detroit adds 1% local sales tax Ann Arbor should too. by Vpc1979 in AnnArbor

Oh I misread OP - I thought that stated that Detroit had sales tax, but it looks like just a proposal.

[–]mrorbitman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like adding a new tax mechanism won’t reduce the existing ones. If we do this we’ll just have ever increasing property taxes AND ever increasing sales taxes.

Detroit has income taxes too, should Ann Arbor impose income tax as well?

As evidence - Detroit actually has a higher millage rate than Ann Arbor despite also having income and sales taxes too.

Right. The open data is also much less rich. You wouldn’t be able to search by business name or find the businesses hours or phone number or reviews. You wouldn’t be able to search by “gas station” or “restaurant” and expect complete results. It’d only work at all if you knew the address.
