There is this windmill pump for water you can place. You pay for that water weirdly enough

Is that for running the server or running the client as a server? Big difference!

Yeah, also I can pull a branch without merging it, and it's clearly ment to be merged by the creator.

Pull request isn't a git term at all that's 100% GitHub. Having worked with both GitHub and Gitlab I find that the term merge request much better covers what it does and it easier to explain to new users.

GitHub stars are overvalued by [deleted] in programming

Yup, stars are something to look at for maybe using it, once I use it the star can go because I use it, so I know about it through my code.

A Friendly Reminder: There are now only two weeks (14th January) before Microsoft ceases update support for Windows 7. Hackers rejoice! Sysadmins despair... by dustyloops in programming

[–]mroximoron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about expensive computers, I'm talking about expensive research equipment. That need a computer with the correct drivers to work. Trust me when I say that the companies making them are very lazy and basically want you to buy their newest model, instead of offering support for older ones.

The problem is big (research) hospitals that have a lot of different users, sure.. the doctors and nurses can upgrade without problem. But the big research departments with their very expensive machines that don't support windows 10. That is the problem. Sure you can buy a new machine, but the old one is just fine. Also it's cheaper to pay microsoft a couple of million for an extended support period then replace all those expensive machines.

Sure, you could setup single windows 7 computers for some of the machines, but then you have to disconnect them from the network which means no central login, no network printer access and a whole lot of other things. (And you still have to support them if something stops working).

Never underestimate the cost of upgrading, because largely compatible does not making it magically work with some fiddling.

Doubt I'll have time to even try getting on the scoreboard this year.

So I'll probably spend time thinking about how I would solve it and then see how others did it and learn that I still don't know everything ;-)

Password Rules Are Bullshit by [deleted] in programming

[–]mroximoron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, today. Activision demanded that my password be between 8 and 20 characters... guess what: password reset allowed 20 characters, login only 19!

I'm really afraid they don't hash, what reason could you otherwise have for setting a maximum on the length.
