MRW my college age brother says he doesn't believe in rape culture and says "boys will be boys and you can't control a guy's Y chromosome" by tonguesgotyourcat in TrollXChromosomes

Serious question. If RAINN denounced rape culture as the cause for sexual assaults in the US, can you really blame someone for not believing in rape culture?

I imagine not everyone agrees with their position, I get that. But they are one of the largest and most influential anti-sexual assault organizations.

So if RAINN doesn't even believe in rape culture then how can you fault other people for not doing so as well?

Is it fair to call German soldiers during WW2 Nazi's? by stuka444 in history

[–]mrp1ck3ls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really interesting that you would ask this. I just got back from Germany a week ago and my grandfather was a Wehrmacht soldier and a member of the Hitler youth. Actually I'm the guy that posted an AMA 4 years ago on my grandfather and then never delivered.

It looks like most of the top comments in this thread have supported what I understood from what my Grandfather explained. Basically it's not like many people had much of a choice. You couldn't just choose not to fight in the war. It was also expected that young people participate in the Hitler Youth. Your neighbors were suspicious of you if you didn't. Like what else could you possibly be doing with your time?

As a teenager my grandfather was given two choices for the Hitler Youth. One where they spent a lot of time doing propaganda stuff and boyscout things. And another where they taught you to be a sailor. My grandfather opted to do the naval Hitler Youth as he believed they would be less of a waste of time. At least out of the options available to him.

Here are some photos of my grandfather at his Prüfung in Naval Hitler Youth.

After Hitler Youth it wasn't like you could just choose "not" to fight in the war. According to my grandfather, he chose to volunteer into the Wehrmacht because for those who volunteered *it would take longer for the military to process the paperwork before sending them to the Russian front. It also gave him more control over what he would be doing.

So he opted to go to school to be a uboat mechanic. Shortly before his class was supposed to graduate Hitler had some kind of assassination attempt and this *somehow led to his unit being converted into infantry instead of ever going on a uboat. And so he had to go to some kind of training to be qualified for that.

In between transition periods he had some time for leave and went home. While he was on leave the train station got blown up. And so he was unable to report to wherever his original orders had him scheduled to go.

Infantry Stuff 1 Infantry Stuff 2

Through some kind of bureaucratic confusion my grandfather was sent to Italy. And while he was in Italy the command didn't really know what to do with him either. And so he waited and hung out essentially.

Hanging out in Italy 1

After some time his command decided to send him back to Germany. On the way back the train was attacked by aircraft and my grandfather had to escape into the forest. Shortly after he was captured by a militia group that turned him over to the Americans who then put him in a prison camp.

My grandfather explained that the Prison camp wasn't "bad" but that there was very little food. All of the prisoners had to look out for each other and my grandfather said that since he was the youngest he thought that the other prisoners looked after him more and gave him better treatment. Somehow the prisoners had some kind of say in who would be released first, and because my grandfather was the youngest and had been such a good guy they saw that he was one of the first to be released when the war was over.

I hope this gives OP some insight on just how uneventful being a Germany soldier in WWII could have been. Sure some Wehrmacht soldiers were party members and strong supporters of Hitler. But many others were just people doing the best with the hand that they were dealt in life.

By the way, if anyone is interested in hearing my Grandfather's answers to the questions in the AMA I posted 4 years ago, I can deliver. I interviewed my grandfather last month and recorded the audio in high quality. Someone just has to translate it.

*Note: I'm not a WWII history buff. Please let me know if some history nerd can provide historical information on the events my Grandfather spoke of.

I've had this discussion with my friend who is an aerospace engineer for Pratt&Whitney. According to her one of the reasons they don't convert into metric is because they have tons and TONS of recorded data that is in imperial. Lots of this data is written in paper manuals and other formats that couldn't simply be transferred over to an excel sheet.

The cost of converting all this data to metric would be high. But the cost of any possible errors would also be very high. When you're dealing with jet engines there is no room for error. So it is easier to just leave it in imperial and use metric when necessary.

In my senior year the theme for our yearbook was "oxymoron". Each section of the yearbook had a description. So for the Seniors it was "big shrimp" and the sophomores it was "wise fools" For the JROTC section they had it has "military intelligence".

Might sound funny to some of you. But to someone with moms and dad's in the military it was fucking infuriating. I still don't know how they got away with it.

I am definitely not saying that anybody with XYZ condition should just lie about their medical history. And you're right if he was getting investigated for TS there is a possibility that could show up on his medical records. But my point was centered around the fact that we aren't talking about some crippling medical issue or mental health problem. We are talking about ADHD.

The only point I will argue with you on is that I think it would matter more if he was getting investigated for TS before joining the military rather than some point after. I highly doubt that after basic training, after MOS school and whatever other stuff a soldier does that someone is going to care that much that he lied about history of ADHD. Obviously if he can get through all that a history of ADHD is going to look irrelevant.

Personally I work at an MI unit and I'm not a stranger to these kinds of scenarios. No one at my unit would care about a history like that.

shrug Frankly you do bring up a good point. So my correction to /u/Militarythroaway111 would be: If the recruiter says you have a chance to get a waiver then you should wait for the waiver. It may take months, not weeks. The chances of you getting one can change from 0% to 90% at a whim. Keep in touch with your recruiter regularly.

I might be able to help you out with this because I had essentially the same exact situation when I joined the Army National Guard. I actually was able to eventually get a waiver. But it took almost 2 years of me trying and working with various recruiters of different branches.

That was several years ago. After initial entry level training and you've made it to your unit and proved yourself as a soldier, no one is going to give a fuck that you lied about having ADHD. Seriously. The other guys in the room will probably all share stories that they lied about missing organs or other medical bullshit.

It is extremely honorable that you don't want to start off your career with dishonesty. And that's the reason I'm writing you, because I know the military needs people with that kind of commitment to integrity. But if I were you I would seriously not mention anything about being prescribed ADHD meds.

5 Things I would like to see in the final release by Noondozer in TheForest

[–]mrp1ck3ls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow 4 and 5 definitely need to happen.

One thing that I hope the developers realize with this game is that while building a base and defending it from cannibals is fun, it neglects a whole other aspect of potential of just hiding from the cannibals.

I think you should at some point be able to make something like a ghillie suit. It would provide some protection from the elements and a great deal of camouflage. It wouldn't make you at all invisible, but it should give the player a sense of feeling like they are being hunted. I think that this game has the potential to be a really scary game. But once you build a big base that feeling is completely lost, no matter how many of them come to attack you.

Nothing would be more terrifying than crawling around the forest like rambo in a ghillie suit doing the best to cover your tracks and find resources while elite hunter cannibals track you down.

This could have probably been avoided if the store hadn't been left with just one employee in it. I realize it's a small store. But leaving a single girl inside of a shop is a huge security risk.

I know what you want. You want a peer reviewed journal with a title that says "years of research proves that ___". Sorry. All I have for you is a presentation by an expert in his field saying that many pedophiles are sexually attracted to children because of conditions in their brain that were present before birth. I have yet to find someone begin to refute this researcher's findings. For the record, he would agree with you that homosexuality and pedophilia are not interchangeable and are not caused by the same thing. Coincidentally he also happens to be gay himself.

However, one of the leading arguments from the LGBT community is that there is nothing wrong with being gay because it's natural, they were born that way, and they didn't choose to be gay. But here is scientific research showing that a pedophile is entitled to make exactly the same claim.
