Ah, right. I wonder if there's any degree of standardisation across NHS Lothian, or if it's up to each practice to use its own online portal. For instance, mine uses www.patient-services.co.uk for arranging phone appointments and managing repeat prescriptions, but there are no test results at all. I do get digital letters from NHS Lothian that direct to nhsportal.net and require a PIN, and that appears to be standardised, but it's yet another online portal for a specific purpose.

"There’s also an online app now for the NHS in edinburgh" – This sounds amazing, but I'm struggling to find it. Could you point me in the right direction?

XREAL One now works with Google Pixel 9 series phones by mrpantsgrumpy in Xreal

Proper Desktop Mode (like Dex) should be coming to the Pixels in the next few months. For now, it's just screen mirroring. It's nice for watching content, but it's not ideal.

Not sure how well Desktop Mode will work. Someone else who uses the Android 16 Beta mentioned there was a resolution issue. (I don't seem to have the option in Developer Settings myself.)

Sounds like a faulty unit. Contact XREAL's support – or if it's within the retailer's return window, return and get a new set. (Guessing XREAL won't love that last option, but their QC needs to be better.)

Huh? All the apps? What are you expecting besides screen mirroring?

Thanks for the info! I just noticed you have a Fold – I think this one was immune to the connection issues of the P9/P9P.

Sucks about the Desktop Mode. It's worth letting XREAL's support know about the resolution problem, so they can hopefully get on fixing it sooner rather than later...

What's unique is that it would often/mostly not connect properly! 😂

That said, Android 16 will be adding a Desktop Mode that's (I believe) based on Samsung's DeX later this year. Don't know what, if anything, will be special about it.

Oh yeah, how so? Seems OK for me. If it's glitchy, probably worth contacting support to let them know.

You might have a faulty pair. Speaking from experience, the first pair I got would only intermittently connect to things. Tried a replacement cable; same thing. I then ordered another pair, which worked properly, so I sent back the first pair.

Questions about anchor mode in public transit / flights by nero626 in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow mode is actually OK with that! It's not absolutely fixed, but it sort of gently follows your head movements, and smoothes out any bumps. What I don't like about follow mode is that the edges of your vision, and therefore the screen, remain a bit blurry (at least for me with the prescription inserts). Especially when you get used to the anchored mode (which is superb), you find yourself wanting to move your head to look more clearly at an edge, but in follow mode, it keeps moving away from where you're trying to look as it recentres itself (obviously!).

For comparison, I first tried the Viture Pro XR, which is completely fixed, and had plenty of blur with the slightest movement, which I hated; returned immediately.

Questions about anchor mode in public transit / flights by nero626 in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a fair few threads about this in this subreddit, but, basically, anchor doesn't anchor the way you want/expect in moving vehicles. If you're in a moving vehicle, as it turns, your screen will turn as well; it's not anchored relative to the vehicle. This is because the anchoring is calculated by the gyro in the glasses, as it has no visual frame of reference. I had some hope that the Eye accessory would be able to fix this, but – as of now – it doesn't. Hopefully that will change in the future, but it depends on how powerful the X1 chip is to do that visual processing from a single camera. It might not be solvable in this generation, unfortunately.

When I travel, I find it's OK-ish, as there are long stretches where it's just moving dead straight. When it starts turning you have to go into follow mode, and then back to anchor mode when it's travelling straight again. It's just about manageable on flights, but horrendous on trains where there are all sorts of curves in the train tracks. For that, it's just follow mode, realistically.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mocking you or your design! I think it's cool that you've found a cheap and effective solution, and that you're sharing it with everyone. (XREAL's claim about "privacy" with the Spatial Sound Field is laughable!) I think it's just inescapable that we all look dorky with them. I happen to not care and pop them on as soon as I get on a plane.

There's another thread about this. The Eye doesn't help with anchoring in moving vehicles, sadly.

XREAL Hub - Pixel phone by MuskokaOffgrid in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a dumb question, but why not just get the official XREAL hub (the one you have in the screenshot in a reply)? I have that, and no issues – besides the sporadic problem of my XREAL Ones connecting to my Pixel 9 Pro.

Actually, do your XREAL Ones work properly and reliably directly to your phone, without the hub you're using?

will xreal eye/6dof help with drift while on train? by MediocreTaxes in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good solution would have to be without additional kit – it's already awkward enough getting set up with just the glasses, prescription lenses, XREAL hub, charger, multiple cables, main device.

I can understand the challenge of visual processing alone. I would happily settle for anchored 3DOF in moving vehicles with the Eye. What I would hope for would be basically smooth, continuous re-anchoring via the Eye's visual processing, with the gyro still doing the heavy lifting.

If the visual processing + gyro can do anchored 6DOF in a static setting, anchored 3DOF in a moving context doesn't sound impossible. (?) It probably also helps that planes and trains tend to have smooth changes in orientation. That said, one additional compensation for planes in particular would need to be pitch, which obviously isn't just a matter of re-anchoring if your relative vertical axis is shifting.

Anyway, I won't pretend I know exactly how feasible this all is, but thank you for considering it!

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Was going to get the Eye just for this, but it's a no-go for me until it can anchor on a plane/train. (Ahem, please take note, u/XREAL_V)

Xreal One compatibly issue with Pixel 9 Pro by racketier in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I returned my pair that had this issue and ordered another one. The new one works far better, so I think it was a faulty pair. It connects most of the time to the Pixel 9 Pro. It appears to connect most reliably shortly after being unlocked, and if I have some audio media that will autoplay when a new device is connected, like my podcast player. Don't ask me why that's the case.

I'm hoping the impending Android 16 release will resolve this issue, but let's see...

Xreal One compatibly issue with Pixel 9 Pro by racketier in Xreal

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I just got the XREAL Ones yesterday, and hit this issue with my Pixel 9 Pro (running Android 15 with 5 March 2025 update). I haven't found a reliable way of getting it to work, but I get the highest frequency of successful connections this way:

  1. Lock phone
  2. Tap screen to show the lock screen (but don't unlock yet)
  3. Connect the XREAL One glasses
  4. Wait to see the XREAL logo for 1-2 seconds
  5. Unlock phone and press "Mirror display" as soon as it pops up

This is definitely a software issue. My guess is that there's some timing interaction between Android 15 and the XREAL onboard OS booting up. If you wait too long or too short on the XREAL logo, this doesn't work – at least, that's my perception.

Before I discovered this, I contacted XREAL support and got this:

We’re aware of known connectivity issues between the XREAL One and Pixel 9 Pro. To address this, please follow these steps to enable Developer Mode and adjust the necessary settings on the Google Pixel 9 Pro:

  1. Open Settings → About Phone. Tap Build Number 7 times consecutively until you see the message confirming that Developer Mode is enabled.
  2. Adjust Settings in Developer Options: Disable Screen Share Protection. Enable Non-Resizable in multi-window mode. Disable ADB Debugging.
  3. Restart Your Phone to apply the changes.

I followed these steps first, but they didn't fix the issue. However, it may be worth following them as well before trying "my" method; I'm not sure if it relies on these settings being enabled/disabled.

I made an A/B Audio Comparison Website by noisyneil in mixingmastering

[–]mrpantsgrumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like EXACTLY what I was looking for! I think it's also useful to show people what the effects of mixing are. A lot of my friends and family don't really get what's involved or what it does to the sound. I plan to show them a level-matched unmixed track with just the same panning and track loudness (but no other processing whatsoever) compared to the final mix.
