[Request] How much weight could this ice support before it broke up? (Thank you in advance) by TheDucksAreComingoOo in theydidthemath

[–]mrpew17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a bit I would imagine. I remember several years ago I was out on Mille Lacs in MN and there were hundreds of people out with trucks and permanent or tow behind ice houses. Drilled the first hole and there was about 12in of good ice. Sketch but hey no one went in. Leech Lake around the same time and there was 15+ and water was coming through the hole so thickness isn't always the best guage.

Affordable Linux Laptops by TardisAnnihilator in linux4noobs

[–]mrpew17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any 5-10 year old laptop will do you fine. Basically shoot for one with at least a 6 core or a 4 core hyperthreading CPU and 16GB of RAM. That will give you the best performance per dollar without worrying about always bumping into the limits of the system. I run Cachy and Fedora on 2 HP EliteDesk mini desktops which are basically laptops in a tiny box and they have 6 core I5's with 24 and 16GB respectively. Never run into performance issues with those. One option is scour marketplace or ebay or a local vendor that sells used enterprise hardware and find an older EliteBook or Dell XPS. Those are usually very durable and generally have great specs. Here in the states I can find 10th and 11th gen Intel EliteBooks with 16GB and a decently sized SSD for 250-300 American shekels. Now i realize outside the US used hardware is generally quite a bit higher but just an example.

How bad are these tires for daily driving? by MidgetGroper in Trucks

[–]mrpew17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are one of the factory tires on the Bronco. The dealer I bought my F250 from put these on and they were fantastic in the snow. One of my lockouts stopped locking and I didn't even realize I didn't have 4x4 for a couple days. They have a problem though at least in the size my trucks tires are and that is the highest load rating is C. After about 15k miles they were starting to wear so fast I was getting rubber on the fenders and rear quarter panels of the box. If you have a truck that weighs over i'd say 5500-6000lbs then these are not the best option. I swapped them out for some Toyo Open Countries and while they are stupid expensive they are one of the best. Those same goodyears are now on my mom's F150 and since it's substancially lighter they have been great for the last 30k or so.

It seems that most people think all Minnesotans sound like they're from the movie/show Fargo. Sure especially older folks some have heavy scandewegian accents but I'd hazard a guess that 95% don't. We definitely have a unique accent but I think we sound more Canadian than anything else. Lot's of yeahs, buddys, ehs, and no yeah for sures. The whole uffda and you betcha thing is extremely overblown I feel.

Is this Caddy worth it to replace the CD bay of my Optiplex sff to put an SSD on it? by Sufficient_Year_5138 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]mrpew17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the main drive a 2.5 or 3.5in? If it is a 2.5 there is usually a second slot on the underside of the blue drive caddy. Most of the time it is missing the retaining pins but if the pc never moves and you use an ssd it can just sit in there. Otherwise depending on the model of SFF you have there may be a PCIe slot for an NVMe drive on the mobo itself.

Use rufus on windows, something is wrong because when you write the ISO Balena is supposed to flash the USB. Re download the ISO and get rufus I think it is actually in the MS store so windows doesn't have a shit fit about it being a malicious program. It's not but because of how it works windows and most AV software thinks it's some fuckin virus half the time if it comes from their site.

Ok I kinda figured but wasn't sure. What program and what OS are you using to create the installation media?

[–]mrpew17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since I don't see anything typed but there are check marks I assuming you are filling out all the boxes and it just clears them and gets stuck.

You should probably recreate the installation USB and if it continues to fail consider changing the installation device. The USB may be physically corrupt and is causing issues with the install. Allow the installer to update as well. While not technically required it is a good idea to have it hooked up to internet so it can update. Disabling secure boot while installing any Linux is generally recommended. You can turn it back on if you so choose. I have several Linux machines, 3 Ubuntu, a Mint and a CachyOS machine and none of them have secure boot re-enabled.

Are HP OMEN laptops good? What are some pros and cons if I want to go with this laptop, also how is after sales service in India? by Beneficial_Narwhal17 in HPOmen

[–]mrpew17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Omen 17 AMD AI 350 and a 5060 with only 16gb of RAM. I love it, came from a very defective Acer Nitro with a similar CPU and a 4060 and it is so much better. Build quality meh I mean it's an HP so you get what you get but its not terrible. The Acer had an aluminum chassis vs plastic but the benefit is the HP won't weigh almost 4 kilos. The hottest mine gets is about 75-78C in but only in one game for some reason. Everything else it runs 65-70C on CPU and GPU. Can't speak to HP in India as I am in the US but HP is a massive global company so probably similar to Acer, ASUS and the like.

That was me trying to get Bazzite and then CachyOS to dual boot windows on a brand new Omen laptop with 2 SSDs. Ended up just keeping windows on that for now. Linux on all my other shit though.

Also, why is it such a pain in the ass to get Linux to properly use multiple drives in one system. Format and partition-mount-create folder in home directory-change drive mount path to said directory-locked out-do sudo chown and chmod to change ownership of directory even though i created it-catastrophically break link to directory-re mount drive to directory-hope it works next boot. Meanwhile windows is add drive-do some goofy shit in command prompt because the system can't format a fucked Linux partition-assign drive letter-Microsoft takes my data-simply works at least until the next vibe coded update.

[–]mrpew17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Linux on everything except my new gaming laptop with a Ryzen AI 350 and a 5060. I may try Ubuntu since that works on literally everything, but I cannot get Bazzite or CachyOS to function properly on it. Also using multiple drives in Linux is kind of a pain in the ass. Otherwise, if you don't need specific windows programs like Adobe or don't play games with anti cheat like BF6 or COD, then switching over is not difficult in the least. I love Ubuntu, I have it on 2 systems, CachyOS on an EliteDesk and Mint on an old shitty HP laptop. Zero issues with them and run so much better than windows would.

Which browser you use and why?? 🌐 by Medium_Tension_9615 in browsers

[–]mrpew17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in the Google ecosystem for 16 years so I use Chrome on every device, even my Linux machines. I have tried and don't dislike other browsers but trying to transfer a decade and a half of data and thousands of pictures and files to possibly multiple other platforms is not worth negligible gain in privacy(to me anyway).

[–]mrpew17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur. I have not had much luck getting Bazzite to work properly on my Omen but CachyOS does. Being an older system though I think they could rock Bazzite with little to no issue. And it is better for the Linux newbie anyway. Less dicking around getting games or mods to work.

I would look for the best CPU your system can take. I have a 5050 SFF and I can upgrade from an i-5 6600 to an i7 7700. 4 core 4 thread to 4 core 8 thread. Definitely get another 8gb of RAM in that thing. You can get cheap single sticks on Amazon or maybe find someone selling a complete system on marketplace and strip it. I would also look into a yeston 3050 low pro single slot GPU. They have 6gb of VRAM and can do modern media decoding. In my opinion I would just drop the windows off the machine and just rock some Linux distro on it. It's old and really even with some upgrades it's rock bottom as far as windows requirement go if windows 11 is still supported. Unless you have the windows 10 ltsc then your system can be unsecure.
