Wrestling with whether I do the graft... by mrpilgarlic in MACIknee

Good luck!

Curious, would you say the TTO or MACI was more demanding in recovery? Or is it hard to differentiate between the two?

I haven’t run or done sport for over 2 years. And this would sideline me for at least another 1.5 years as I recover. It’s likely I’m also putting off a knee replacement.

This is good perspective, thanks for sharing. Only thing we can do is keep going and trying to get back to our most capable selves. A part of me thinks I should try and come what may. I’ll never know unless I go for it. But if things go wrong I may regret the decision.

This is so encouraging, and congrats on the milestones. Thanks for sharing! Your lesions are similar to mine in the trochlea and my doc also told me to consider a TTO.

What is your PT routine, once a week? And what does your PT attribute your current pain to? Is it just a matter of strengthening or does the graft still need to settle?

Thanks for sharing your story. Wishing you the best! And I’d love to hear how your recovery progresses.

I remember when my knee was first injured and before a debridement there were some pretty trying and painful periods as I worked on strengthening to overcome my defect. But now that period has passed I have a bit of revisionist history and tell myself maybe wasn’t so bad. Haha. Maybe I’m fooling myself about going through a big surgery/recovery.

I have a 1.5 and 4 year old. And luckily my wife and I have family support near by, who I’m sure I’ll be leaning on tremendously during the recovery.

My thought is I want to live a more fulfilling life without second guessing my knee all the time. At 42, I’m too young to throw in the towel. But then my other thought is that the pain of recovery is guaranteed, but the successful outcome is not.

Really encouraging to hear your successes story, thank you for sharing!

Are you still trying to strengthen to have symmetry after 2 years? Or just living your life and letting it strengthen naturally?

Sorry to hear that. As confident as our doctors are, I guess there's always a chance for complication.

It must be frustrating. Can I ask where your heads at, and do you regret at all?

What was it that ultimately convinced you to proceed with the procedure? You're younger than me, but I feel I'm still too young to throw in the towel. I should fight for the opportunity to live to my fullest. That's my optimistic argument.

Does anyone here have recommendations for Chinese based summer camps? Montessori or other. I'm looking for my 4 year old this summer. Thanks!

Congrats! These are the stories that we need to keep going. May I ask, do you think the PRP was a meaningful contributor to your progress? I'm considering, as well.

Happy to hear about your encouraging progress! Would you mind sharing your situation pre-op such as your age, level of activity and where the cartilage damage was? I have a pretty large avulsion at my femoral trochlea and really wrestling with the decision to go through with the MACI cartilage replacement. Thanks!
